OSLS Kindergarten News http://www.teacherweb.com/IN/OurShepherdLutheranSchool/ShirleyCronauer Feb. 13, 2014 Special Activities this Week: ★ Students learned about the trust of a poor woman who gave all that she had as an offering to the Lord. We can trust that God will take care of our needs as we willingly give our time, talents, and treasures. ★ They made a sight word book called A Valentine. Students should save the sight words “could” and “for” in their word boxes. These will be on the second trimester sight word test. Please refer to the word list on the kindergarten website and newsletter for practice. Testing will take place next week. ★ Students sorted valentines that contained words with short a and short o. Then they sounded out the words that they sorted and recorded their results. ★ They used the letters from the word “valentines” and manipulated them to see how many little words they could make with those letters. ★ Also they played a game called “Roll a Word” to make CVC words. After recording the results, they specified if the CVC word they printed made a real or nonsense (Dr. Seuss) word. ★ We continued to review coins and values. I will test the children next week. They will need to be able to identify each coin by the pictures on the heads and tails sides. They will be given a paper with the words: penny, nickel, dime and quarter and they will need to write each word by the corresponding coin pictures. They will also need to write the value of each coin. ★ The students are also working on concepts of time. We did a number of “experiments” to see what takes more or less time. We also talked about the position of the sun at dawn, afternoon, and dusk. ★ It was fun for the students to make paper “cuckoo” clocks. After decorating them, the students manipulated the clock hands to match specified times. We also watched a number of learning videos that helped the students learn to tell time on both analog and digital clocks. I will also test the students on telling time to the hour next week as well.
