Gospel Reading
John 4:5-42
Jesus reveals himself to the Samaritan woman at the well.
(shorter form: John 4:5-15,19b-26,39a,40-42)
Background on the Gospel Reading
On this Sunday and the next two Sundays, we break from
reading the Gospel of Matthew to read from John's Gospel.
The Gospel of John is the only Gospel not assigned to a
particular liturgical year. Instead, readings from John's
Gospel are interspersed throughout our three-year liturgical
cycle.
In today's Gospel, the dialogue between Jesus and a woman
from Samaria is among the most lengthy and most
theological found in Scripture. The most startling aspect of
the conversation is that it happens at all. Jesus, an observant
Jew of that time, was expected to avoid conversation with
women in public. The animosity between the Jews and the
Samaritans should have prevented the conversation as well.
The woman herself alludes to the break from tradition:
“How can you, a Jew, ask me, a Samaritan woman, for a
drink?” Yet Jesus not only converses with the woman, he
also asks to share her drinking vessel, an action that makes
him unclean according to Jewish law.
The initial conversation between Jesus and the woman is
better understood if we consider the importance of water,
especially in the climate of Israel. At first, the woman
understands Jesus' promise of “living water” in a literal
sense: “Sir, give me this water, so that I may not be thirsty
or have to keep coming here to draw water.” With no
running water, the daily trip to the well by the women of the
community was of paramount importance. The women of
the town would have traveled to the well in the early
morning, but this woman came to the well at noon, the
hottest time of the day. The timing of her visit is a clear
sign that she is an outcast within the Samaritan community. We learn in her conversation with Jesus that she is an
outcast because of her “many husbands.”
Behind the conversation lies the animosity and rivalry
between the Jews and the Samaritans. Samaritans shared
Jewish ancestry, but Samaritans had intermarried with
foreigners when they lived under the rule of the Assyrians.
Samaritan religion included worship of Yahweh, but was
also influenced by the worship of other gods. When the
Jews refused Samaritan help in the building of the Temple
at Jerusalem, the Samaritans eventually built a temple for
themselves at Mt. Gerizim (the same mountain mentioned
by the woman at the well). Like the Jews, the Samaritans
believed that a Messiah would come.
The high point of the conversation is when Jesus reveals
himself to her as the Messiah. His answer to the Samaritan
woman's questions about worship is meant to predict a
time when worshiping in truth and spirit will become the
way to worship.
After the conversation, the Samaritan woman becomes a
disciple. Even though she is an outcast and not a Jew, she
returns to her town to lead others to Jesus and to wonder
whether she has found the Messiah. The Samaritan townspeople return with her to meet Jesus for themselves, and
many are said to come to believe in him.
The significance of the encounter between Jesus and the
Samaritan woman has many levels. The first is personal:
The woman is herself converted to belief in Jesus as
Messiah because he knows her sin but speaks with her just
the same. The second is social: Having come to know
Jesus as the Messiah, the Samaritan woman becomes an
evangelist to her own people.
The third level of the story is educational: Jesus uses his
encounter with the Samaritan woman to teach his disciples
that God's mercy is without limit. The disciples return
from their shopping quite confused to find Jesus talking
with a Samaritan, and a woman at that! But the conversion
of the Samaritan townspeople is a foretaste of the kind of
open community that will be created among those who
believe that Jesus is the Messiah.

Celebrating the contributions of black Catholics
From former slaves to founders of religious orders,
these men and women helped shape the U.S.
Church
by Michael R. Heinlein, OSV Newsweekly
(this article was originally published by Our Sunday Visitor in
the OSV Newsweekly, www.osv.com, and is used with permission.)
February’s celebration of Black History Month in the United
States traces its roots back to the 1920s, but it attained more
formal recognition in the 1970s, as is obvious with President
Gerald R. Ford’s 1976 Bicentennial Year message about its
importance. Ford described Black History Month as an occasion to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area
of endeavor throughout our history.”
Despite the many accomplishments of Black History
Month’s goals, its often secular narrative forgets the contributions of Black Catholics. In recognition of that, the National Black Catholic Clergy Caucus of the United States
began observing November as national Black Catholic History Month nearly 30 years ago. Nonetheless, in order to
promote awareness of the accomplishments of all black
Americans, it is important to promote an awareness of some
of the many Catholic individuals who have achieved greatness in the face of racism’s plight — and in many cases the
supreme greatness of holiness. No national celebration of
Black History Month would be complete without including
these Catholic stories — or the countless stories of black
Catholics left untold.

of Baltimore, served the same Haitian community. In catechizing the children, he noticed that many of them were unable to read or write — particularly girls. Recognizing this,
he saw a need for a girls’ school and asked Lange and collaborators to run it. Moreover, he encouraged her to establish the Oblate Sisters of Providence — the first successful
establishment of black sisters in the United States. She had
to tackle a variety of hurdles to achieve this work, as Baltimore’s Archbishop William E. Lori recognized: “She had
many, many obstacles — among them racial prejudice and
hatred — and her love overcame that in her life.”
The Oblate Sisters of Providence broadened their mission
from its origins in schools under the leadership of Mother
Mary Lange, eventually serving in a variety of educational
and social capacities, including helping young women develop careers and operating homes for widows and orphans.
Lange died in Baltimore on Feb. 3, 1882. The formal investigation into her holy life was opened in 1991 by thenArchbishop (later Cardinal) William H. Keeler of Baltimore. (CONTINUED NEXT WEEK)

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT
The Rite of Election
By Barbara Forde
Coordinator, Adult Faith Formation/RCIA
The first Sunday of Lent marks the beginning of the annual
Lenten observance. On
this day, we celebrate the
Rite of Election of Catechumens who have been
preparing for Baptism,
Confirmation, and the
Eucharist. We also celebrate the Rite of Call to
Continuing Conversion
of candidates, who have
already been baptized,
but are preparing for the
sacraments of Confirmation and the Eucharist.
This year because of the
number of catechumens
and candidates, the Rite was
extended to include the second weekend in lent.
These Rites begin the period
of purification and enlightenment, the period of final
more intense spiritual preparation for the Sacraments of
Initiation. At this step, on
the basis of the testimony of
godparents/sponsors, catechists, the assembly and of
the catechumens’ and candidates’ reaffirmation of their
intention, the Church judges
their state of readiness and
decides on their advancement toward the sacraments of initiation.
Children’s
Easter Choir
We need 3rd—11th grade kids with
experience with a choir, to sing at Holy
Thursday Mass at 7pm. Holy Thursday
is April 13th. Please contact Rosemary
Hernandez at 210-681-5063 x 18.
This step is called election because the acceptance made by
the Church is founded on the election by God, in whose
name the Church acts.
Before the Rite of Election is celebrated, catechumens and candidates
are expected to have undergone a conversion in
mind and in action and to
have developed a sufficient acquaintance with
Christian teaching as well
as a spirit of faith and
charity
Admission to election belongs to the bishop and the presiding celebrant for the Rite of
Election is the bishop himself.
The season of Lent is marked by images of a journey. We
recall the journey of the Israelites out of Egypt, through the
desert to the Promised Land; Sacred
Scripture reminds us of the journey of
Christ into the desert, where he was
tempted by the devil, in preparation
for his public ministry; we recall the
journey of the saints and all the holy
men and women who have gone before us in faith. We know, then, that
we do not make this Lenten Journey
alone.
After election, the “elect” and candidates should be surrounded with
prayer so that the entire church will
accompany and lead them to encounter Christ.
This Rite of Election was held on March 11, 2017, at St.
Rose of Lima catholic Church
