In this challenge, you will solve problems involving capacity, or volume, which is a measure of how much a container can hold. For US standard units, we use gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and ounces. For metric units, we use liters and milliliters. Other volume measurements we use are in³ (cubic inches), ft³ (cubic feet), cm³ (cubic centimeters), and m³ (cubic meters). US Standard Units - Capacity 1 gallon (gal) = 4 quarts (qt) 1 quart (qt) = 2 pints 1 pint (pt) = 2 cups (c) 1 cup (c) = 8 ounces (oz) = 16 tablespoons (tbsp) Gallons are used when we want to measure the capacity of very large containers like tubs or pools. If your family drinks milk, you may also see milk in a gallon container in your refrigerator. When we want to measure the capacity of large containers such as juice, soda, or milk, we use quarts. Pints are used when we measure the capacity of smaller containers of milk, juice, or paint samples. Most recipes will use cups and tablespoons to measure the ingredients you need. Metric Units – Capacity 1 liter (l) = 1000 ml = 1000 cm³ 1 milliliter (ml) A half of a large bottle of a soda is about 1 liter. A milliliter is half of an eyedropper or about 20 drops of water.
