Termly Information Year 5 English We begin the new year with the classic narrative poem by Alfred Noyes, The Highwayman. The children will discuss and make predictions about characters and plot before they explore language meanings and the rhythm of the poem and how it should be performed. We will investigate the use of language techniques such as onomatopoeia, imagery and metaphor. The children will write in the style of the poet, tell and then write a narrative from the perspective of one of the characters. After half term, we will study stories from other cultures with Journey to Jo’burg by Beverly Naidoo. We will learn how to correctly punctuate direct speech and further develop our persuasive letter writing skills. Physical Education Outdoor PE will be taught by Mr Murray from Stockport County on a Tuesday afternoon. The focus is on invasion skills through hockey and football. Dance is on a Thursday afternoon with a focus on developing steps, formations and patterning and performing dance expressively. French Introduce numbers 50-100, revise alphabet and weather topics. In the Bon Apetit topic, children will learn to discuss their likes and dislikes with food and be able to read simple food recipes in French. Teacher: Mrs Taylor Date: Spring 2017 Science Animals including humans. How mammals develop over time. The risks to birds during their life cycle. Why we study animals in their natural habitat and how we can improve the local environment for wildlife. As part of this study, we will link be taking part in the RSPB’s Big Bird Watch. Properties and changes of material. Differences between a solid, liquid and gas. Different properties of materials. Reversible or irreversible materials. How to separate a solution. How a material dissolves. Humanities, Computing,Art, D.T Our humanities focus is Geography. A study of the continent of North America. We will undertake map work and look at the physical and human features of this continent. We will read Queen of the Falls as part of this topic. Computing: Computer aided design (CAD) as part of the DT project Bird Hides. Coding: planning and creating an interactive game. Music Mr O’Dowda from Stockport Music Service will be teaching singing, musical notation and keyboards. The children will be focusing on increased confidence and control when playing the keyboard. They will be concentrating on understanding composition and structure of musical pieces. Maths Measurement: We will be convert between different units of metric measure for length, mass, volume. We will be working on understanding and using approximate equivalences between metric and common imperial units. We will focus on calculating the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes. For each of the measure units we will focus on solving ‘real life’ maths problems. Number: We will use all four operations to solve problems involving measure we will be calculating using decimal notation. Geometry: This term we will focus on angles. We will be identifying angles and learn to draw and measure them. We will look at estimating and be able to compare acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Children are expected to practise their spellings every night and to read for 30 minutes. Books may be changed daily if required.
