Y5 Spring Term - St-Christophers Primary

Termly Information
Year 5
English
We begin the new year with the classic narrative
poem by Alfred Noyes, The Highwayman. The
children will discuss and make predictions about
characters and plot before they explore language
meanings and the rhythm of the poem and how it
should be performed. We will investigate the use of
language techniques such as onomatopoeia,
imagery and metaphor. The children will write in the
style of the poet, tell and then write a narrative from
the perspective of one of the characters. After half
term, we will study stories from other cultures with
Journey to Jo’burg by Beverly Naidoo. We will learn
how to correctly punctuate direct speech and
further develop our persuasive letter writing skills.
