The Ministry of Development of North East Region (DoNER), Government of India
organized a mega event namely “Destination North East – 2016” during 12-14 February,
2016 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi to display strengths, potentials and initiatives taken
up by various Ministries in the NE Region.
IT, Skill Development and Digital India was one of the focus areas of this event. A stall
measuring 3mt. x 3mt. was earmarked for MLAsia to showcase its Schemes / Projects
being executed for NER. The following projects implemented in NER were showcased:

Mobile based Agro Advisory System (m4agriNEI): Agro advisories delivered
in two local dialects viz Khasi and Garo. Catering 7000+ farmers across 5
districts of Meghalaya along with Central Agricultural University.

Digital Classroom teaching in Government Schools in Mizoram & Nagaland:
Educational software capsules (1567 total) on various subjects for classes VIII to
XII deployed in 200 schools in state of Mizoram and 100 schools in state of
Nagaland. 2389 teachers from Mizoram and 978 teachers from Nagaland have
been trained on usage of software.

Punarjjani™: A web based tool to assist special teachers in assessment of
children with mental retardation (MR) in age group 6-18 years. 20 special
teachers of 10 special schools from 5 North-East states have been trained &
provided access to tool.

Visvesvaraya Ph.D Scheme for Electronics & IT: 101 Ph.D candidates (full
time and part time) have been supported during academic year 2014-15 and
2015-16 at 11 institutions across 05 NE states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam,
Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura.

IT Research Academy: Two projects through North Eastern Regional Institute
of Science and Technology (NERIST) under ITRA-Mobile. 13 institutions
identified for activities on breed and disease identification of pigs and goats and
information system for safe meat production
The MLAsia stall was designed on the theme on ‘IT in Agriculture and Education’ by
using actual field photographs / statistics etc on the above projects. 500 copies of a
brochure on MLAsia initiatives in NER was prepared and distributed from the stall.
Two women farmers (Mrs Cheerful Kyndait and Mrs Lona Pale) from West Jaintia
Hills, Meghalaya along with the Project Manager (Mr Willey Syiem), m4agriNEI
were invited to share their experiences with the visitors at MLAsia stall. A “Whats-App”
group was created and all their movements (from starting point at Shilong till they
reach back to their home) were tracked and monitored by the team of MLAsia and CPGS.
Also all the happenings in the Stall were updated on this “Whats-App” group. The two
farmers participated in their traditional dress (Jaintia) on all the three days of the event.

MLAsia got an encouraging response and the stall was visited by several dignitaries viz.
Union Minister for State, DONER Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister for State, Home
Affairs Sh. Kiren Rijiju, Chief Minister of Meghalaya Dr. Mukul M. Sangma, Secretary
DONER Sh. Navin Verma, IAS, Joint Secretary DeitY Sh Rajiv Kumar, IAS, besides other
officials from DeitY & other Govt. & Non-Govt. Department and general public. MLAsia
team interacted with these dignitaries & briefed them about MLAsia’s initiates in NE
region.

Action Points:
1. Chief Minister of Meghalaya asked MLAsia to meet him at Shilong and
instructed his PRO to make a note of this. The PRO Ms Payal Khongla
(9436100456) has taken the contact details of MLAsia officials. We may have to
visit CM office according to the appointment given along with CAU authorities.
2. The Minister for State - Home Affairs Sh. Kiren Rijiju verbally assured to provide
all the help for m4agriNEI project. We may approach him for support to expand
m4agriNEI in other NE states (Vice Chancellor, CAU had interacted with him on
this issue some time ago).

3. Secretary DoNER asked us to write a letter from our department to him and
to meet him at his office on MLAsia initiatives at NER. An appointment may be
taken for a meeting of MD&CEO with the Secy.
MLAsia initiatives were appreciated by the visitors. Some of the visitors have expressed
a desire for collaboration with MLAsia e.g.
•
Rain Forest Research Institute (RFRI), Jorhat, (a constituent institute of Indian
Council of Forestry Research and Education, GoI Dehradun) showed interest for
implementation of IIDS along with a marketing portal for their bamboo artisans.
•
Some agencies have shown their interest to link m4agri farmers for procurement
of Ginger / Turmeric etc.
•
Request for pilot of IIDS in Sikkim and Assam from NGOs & Start-up
•
Some of the people have shown interest in Punnarjjani.
The list of some of the visitors who have shown their interest and given their comments
in the ‘Visitor’s Book’ is placed at annexure. On the last day of the event, the project
farmers were felicitated by Dr M R Anand, IES, MD&CEO, MLAsia.
