Winter 2015 - Dunmore High School

Editor’s Note
By: Jillian Korgeski
As Christmas season quickly came and went, we
students think we have nothing
else to look forward to but
summer. But we are wrong. The
winter season at DHS is full of
activities to go to. There are boys
and girls basketball games that
will get you jumping and
screaming. There are swim meets
that make you think we have some fish at our school
because of how fast they swim. There are concerts and
play practices that will allow you to show off your
musical and theatrical talents. Whatever you decide to
explore this winter season, just have fun! Go yell at
opposing schools during games. Go sing at the top of
your lungs during play practices. It doesn’t matter what
you do, just do something! Don’t just sit home every
night and watch Netflix. Actually come out and join
your classmates in showing Buck pride! Be safe and
bundle up in this cold weather, and enjoy all the things
Dunmore has to offer.

football
team had
another
great
season.
They
beat
anyone
who came at them, and were able to make it to the state
championship game at Hershey. The boys and coaches
put in countless hours to make it that far. Under great
senior leadership, almost every seat was taken in the
Hershey Stadium. The cheerleaders yelled loudly, and
the alumni reminisced, as the student section hollered for
the boys. Congratulations to everyone who participated
in helping get our team there. It was a great run, and a
great way to send off the seniors!
New Banners
By: Jillian Korgeski
As the New Year rolled around, new changes came to
our high school gym. The Dunmore Booster Club
recently
purchased
new banners
to be hung up
in the gym.
They are
crimson and
blue, and
cover the
walls
showing all
the success our teams have. One new addition to the
banners is a 1000 point club banner. It shows all the
talented athletes who have been able to score against any
opponent. The banners add a finishing touch to the gym,
and make all opponents know who they are dealing with
when they step into our gym.
All-State Football Players
By: Rachel Beltran
Three very important players on the Dunmore Bucks
team led their team to a State Championship game
against South Fayette. Dan Drewes, a two way lineman
who holds the record for the most starts by an LFC
player, Tim Drewes, and Colin Holmes recently received
the title of All-State. They were crucial to the Bucks
victories and knew when they needed to step up to make
a tackle, touchdown, or block a pass. These three Bucks
have had amazing careers, which will continue for
sophomore Colin Holmes, and they truly deserve the
recognition they have been given throughout the football
season.

Christmas at DHS
By: Courtney Higgins
Anyone who has stepped into Dunmore High School
definitely knows Christmas just passed. Here at Dunmore
High School, we take the holidays very seriously. Whether it’s
Halloween where all the teachers have coordinated costumes
or America Day of Spirit Week, the faculty and students are
always extremely festive. Christmas was no exception. Mr.
Quinn and Mr. Hopkins created a warm and joyful Christmas
feeling throughout the school while everyone is cramming for
the five tests scheduled for the day before break began.
One of the ways Christmas spirit is spread during this
time of year is the Christmas music played in place of the
bells. Classic songs such as “I Want a Hippopotamus for
Christmas,” “Suzy Snowflake,” and “Let it Snow” ring
through the hallways as students exit and enter their classes.
This is one of the most anticipated traditions in Dunmore High
School, and definitely a favorite among students. Another
tradition is the windows throughout the school.
Mrs. Hogan and her art classes do a fantastic job
painting the windows throughout the school. Paintings such as
The Polar Express, Frozen, and Finding Nemo are painted on
the cafeteria, office, and front entrance walls. Art students
work hard on the projects, trying to spread some Christmas
cheer throughout Dunmore High School. With all the holiday
spirit, it is no surprise that this is the most wonderful time of
the year and that Dunmore High School does Christmas like
no other school.
Semi 2015
By: Maeve King
It is that time of year again. As the new year
approaches, Dunmore High School begins to prepare for its
annual semiformal dance. Tickets are bought, hair
appointments are scheduled, dresses are tried on, and suits are
rented. Students arrive at seven o’clock at the Hilton in
Scranton for a night of great music, delicious food, and tons of
pictures. Highlights of the night were the seniors belting out to
Paradise and EJ the DJ having a glow in the dark cowboy hat.
We hope everyone had a safe and fun semi!
Christmas Concert
By: Maddie Loftus
On Sunday, December 7th, the middle school band,
middle school chorus, high school concert band, high school
jazz band, high school chorus, and high school show choir
came together to put on their annual Christmas Concert. The
concert featured everything from classic Christmas carols to
modern takes on old favorites to a Frozen medley. Some
notable performances include the show choir's "Polar Express
Medley,” the middle school
band's "Dance of the Sugar
Plum Fairy,” and the jazz
band's rendition of "Hot
Chocolate.” Of course, we
cannot forget about the ever
so popular "Frozen Medley"
performed by the high school
concert band. The large
number of groups involved
in the concert made for a
tight fit, but everything
ultimately went off without a problem, and overall, it was a
great afternoon. The work that was put in truly showed, so
congratulations to everyone involved. Every group featured in
the show began work on the show as early as September, and
they will begin work on their spring concert just after the start
of the new year. Good luck, and we hope to see you all at the
next concert this spring!
Relations with Cuba
By: Maeve King
In January of 1961, President Eisenhower broke off
diplomatic relations with Cuba. On Wednesday, December
17th, more than half a century later, President Obama ordered
the restoration of full diplomatic relations with Cuba and the
opening of an embassy in Havana. He vowed to “cut loose the
shackles of the past.” The negotiation between Obama and
Cuban President Raúl Castro will help the United States move
beyond a “rigid policy that is rooted in events that took place
before most of us were born.” This is an important milestone
in American foreign relations, which will help the nation
move toward an even brighter future!

Ballers had their first scrimmage against the North Pocono
Trojans Friday, December 5 at North Pocono. Over Christmas
break, the Bucks also participated in the Lynette tournament,
where they placed third after a win against Scranton The
season officially began after the Lynette and is in full swing,
so make sure to go out and support the boys! Also, don’t
forget to save the date in advance for the Holy Cross game,
which will be January 20th at DHS.
Basketball Cheer
By: Kathleen Klatt
Now that football season is over, Dunmore High School
transitions right into
basketball season which
everyone loves. The
boys play very hard and
deserve all the
recognition they get,
but we can't forget
about the cheerleaders!
They are the Bucks
biggest fans always
cheering on the boys to
victory! This year the
varsity captains are Casey Farris as the head captain, and
Alyssa Lopatka and Maria Torquato as co-captains. An
interesting thing about these three girls is that they held these
corresponding roles while on JV. This truly proves that these
girls are great leaders and wonderful at cheering. Varsity has
been cheering on the boys at all their games since the start of
the season. The JV games started too, so that means the JV
cheerleaders get to cheer! The captain is Tessa McDonald and
the co-captains are Emily Pavlowski andAshley Fischetti.
These girls have been
working hard on
routines, cheers, and builds since they went to Pine Forest
back in June. They practice very hard and make clever signs
for the hallways and the gym! Next time you go to one of the
basketball games, make sure to watch the cheerleaders,
whether it's Varsity or JV. They certainly know how to
entertain and keep the crowd pumped up!
Lady Bucks Basketball
By: Gina Tallo
Lead by head coach Mr. Ben O'Brien and assistant coach Mr.
Michael O'Malley, the Dunmore High School girls’ basketball
team has been working hard to have a successful season.
Success is not new to these athletes as last season's stretch to
the state championship ended at one game away from the title.
Only losing one starter Megan Connors, the team is projected
to continue their journey through another winning season.
With the annual Lynett Tournament approaching, targets were
placed on the girls backs due to their championship title at the
tournament in 2013, along with being ranked first in the preseason standings for this year. Although the girls came up
short, they still played hard to get to the championship game.
Starting beside seniors Jill Korgeski, Kayleigh Semion,
Mariah Macejewski, and junior Emily Sheehan, sophomore
Maddie Martin, who has been a vital part of the LB's since her
freshman year, is looking forward to a positive season. "We
hope to have another run in the state playoffs. We came up a
little short last year, but this year we hope to make it to the
state championship. However, it's important to take it one
game at a time," Martin explains. She also shares the secret to
their achievements, "We have numerous players who can score
rather than just 1 or 2. If someone is struggling, we have other
players who can step up on any given night." The Lady Bucks
are ready for anything that is thrown at them and they are
ready to prove it in the upcoming season and playoff run.
Just Keep Swimming
By: Elizabeth Nolen
The 2014 Dunmore High School’s girls swim team is
excpected to swim the distance witth the help of new coach,
Jamie Halpin. In addition, leading the team to a great season
are their five seniors, Carly Cummings, Dana James, Erin
Wagner, and Kylie Brazil. Support the swim team at the
YMCA for their weekly meets. Best of luck to the Dunmore
girls swim team on a winning and successful season!

worked for the last three presidents. If that is not
impressive, I cannot even imagine what is. The staff of
Dunmore Middle School hope all the 8th graders found
there future occupations. If not, well you guys have a

department tell them thank you!!!
Letters to the Veterns
By: Guest Columnist, Mrs. Telnock
After school on November 18
and 19, Mrs. Telnock's volunteers from
8th grade gathered in the library to write personal
messages in donated Christmas cards. The recipients of
the cards will be our soldiers and veterans recovering in
hospitals this Christmas season. This program, Holiday
Mail for Heroes, is sponsored by the Red Cross and for
the past several years eighth grade students and Mrs.
Telnock have participated in this program, collectively
completing thousands of cards for our troops. This year
about 40 volunteers signed up for each day and
completed over 1,500 Christmas cards for this very
worth-while cause.

Cowboy Bebop
By: Timothy Hopkins
Well, the holiday season is a popular time
for many items and some proved more so than
others. The iPhone 6, Guardians of the Galaxy, and
the Kindle Fire HD are all hot bestsellers. However,
one item has peaked my interest for some time. That
item is Cowboy Bebop: The Complete Series on
Blu-Ray. For those of you who don’t know about
Bebop, let me fill you in.
Cowboy Bebop is the story of four bounty
hunters in the future just trying to get money and
put food on the table. Sounds weird, I know, but, it
is so much more than that.
For starters, let me say that this is my second
favorite TV show of all time behind The Simpsons
(at least seasons 1-10 of The Simpsons). This show
has stuck with me ever
since I first watched it
on YouTube. It still
impresses me to this
very day.
First of all, I
want to talk about the
genre this show
encompasses. Cowboy
Bebop is an anime. Now, anime has a huge
following in the United States. However, many
people pass off anime as just kid’s fare, seeing how
it is animation. In Japan, animation is for everyone.
There are different genres, and entertainment fields
for everyone.
So for anyone who thinks this show is for
kids, you are wrong. Bebop is an incredibly violent
show at times, and there is a lot of adult language
throughout. So, obviously, this is not a show for
kids.
Now, I want to express why Bebop is so
awesome. For starters, its characters are
unforgettable. Each character is unique in his or her
own way. That might be due to its voice cast. The
English Dub, American actors speaking over
Japanese actors, is spot on. All of them do their own
jobs at bringing these characters to life.
Another fantastic thing about the show is the
style and animation. The show is beautiful.
The characters are animated in a way that makes
the
m
mo
ve
like
real
peo
ple.
An
oth
er
thing I love is the story. The stories at times are
close at matching stuff in The Godfather at times.
All of the episodes have a unique story presented in
a particular genre. Each episode has a certain style
or genre. From American westerns, to science
fiction, to noir, to horror, Bebop perfectly mixes
each genre while telling a story.
However, the one thing everyone takes out
of the show is the music. Yoko Kanno’s masterful
score brings the show to a whole new level. I
honestly can’t praise the score enough. You
honestly have to listen to it yourselves.
In all, Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest
television shows in existence. For those of you who
want to watch the show, and are afraid of its length,
do not worry. The show is only 26 episodes long.
Now this is not because it was cancelled, but, in
Japan, they usually only do 26 episodes in a series. I
highly recommend Cowboy Bebop, and if you miss
out on it, you are seriously missing out on a
masterpiece.
