How do I use SMART boards?

SMART – Using Interactive Whiteboards
Where will I find one?
−
SMARTboards are available in a number of classrooms e.g. MR107 and FN114. 1
−
Older Promethean boards are gradually being replaced with SMART boards across campus.
What can I do at the board?
The SMART Interactive Whiteboard provides an alternative interface for the attached computer. Once
logged in, you can control the computer from the board using either a pen from the tray or your finger
in place of the left click of the mouse. This allows more flexibility and interactivity.
Any software application running on the computer – web page, PowerPoint etc – will be displayed on
the board. You can interact with the application on the board using your finger or a pen, or the onscreen keyboard (launch this from a button on the tray).
In addition to using the pens and tray, there may be corresponding tools in the on-screen floating
toolbar (a). Further functions are available via the SMART icon menu on the task bar (b) e.g. screen
shade, capture and spotlight.

These tools can be used on the desktop or over any application that is running on the computer.
− Note: If the cursor does not seem to line up accurately when using a pen or your finger, you can
Orient the board. See the SMART Board Interactive Whiteboard Basic Functionality document from
the SMART website.

Writing at the board
Writing on the desktop:
When you write on the desktop with a pen or your finger, a memo note appears which
extends as you write. This can be captured (saved into a SMART Notebook file) if
required using the SMART Ink menu. You can have multiple memo notes.
SMART Ink may look like:

the board or via the SMART Ink toolbar.

into the Office application, but it does not
recognise it as editable text.
− You can use SMART Ink to recognise writing
and convert it into editable text.
− Turn on SMART Ink from within the Microsoft
Ink toolbar if you want to recognise and insert
digital ink as text.
− SMART Ink can capture a folder or application
window into SMART Notebook software. You
can save this as a SMART Notebook file and
export it to other formats such as PDF.
PowerPoint Note:
− In Slideshow mode any digital ink you add acts
as SMART Ink.
− You can control a PowerPoint presentation in
Slideshow mode via the SMART Ink toolbar
− The new version of SMART Ink
appears in the centre of the screen as
a jogwheel. It also appears at the top
of folders and windows as before.
This has the same functionality
as the older version and can
be opened out to find more
tools, moved around the
screen or docked to the side.
Note: If it is moved off the
screen completely SMART Ink will no longer
work.

SMART Ink Document Viewer for PDFs
Use the SMART Ink Document Viewer to open PDFs and add annotations which you can then
save within the document.
SMART Notebook software
Use SMART Notebook software for more flexibility, creativity and interactivity.
When you open SMART Notebook software, the board becomes a whiteboard with an infinite
number of pages. You can write notes and then save them in SMART notebook format, or export
in a number of formats including PDF and Powerpoint.
For more information about using SMART Notebook, see our Introduction to SMART Notebook software,
also available in the Learners’ Toolkit.
