Baker efforts were effective at bringing positive social and

Find the Thesis Statement
During the Progressive Era, many muckrakers played a key role in
positively altering industries that existed then. John Spargo was one of
those muckrakers who helped make working conditions better for the
workers. Spargo was a famous socialist during the Progressive Era, and
wrote a book about child labor in coal mines. Through Spargo’s
substantial efforts, three years after he published his book, the Bureau of
Mining was created to reduce accidents and improve conditions in the
mines.

Children are not old enough nor strong enough to handle a firearm. Daniel
Webster, the director of the John Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research
says “It was obvious to me when I saw this nine-year-old girl holding an
incredibly powerful gun like the uzi, why anyone was surprised when she
couldn’t handle the recoil is beyond me” (Ferdman). Children are not strong
enough nor have enough body mass to be able to handle the recoil of an uzi and
most other firearms also. Kathleen James, the Arms Room manager, says “When
it comes to automatic weapons, [we] never allow a child to take full control of the
firearm” (Ptashkin).

Including a Primary Document
In 1906, Spargo published his book, The Bitter Cry of the Children, which
illustrated the harsh conditions that child laborer were put through during
the Industrial Revolution. Spargo focused of the harsh conditions in this
book using pathos to help persuade the general public that change needs
to happen in factories. Spargo repetitively talked about the poor conditions
that child laborers faced when they worked in factories, which helped him
put his point across. Spargo’s efforts during this era proved to be very
effective. The government created legislative laws, that the factories had
to follow, that benefited the workers.
