Well-known for being the westernmost point of the European Continent, Roca Cape is
in the extreme point of Sintra Mountain Range, sweeping over the Atlantic Ocean,
having been described by Luís de Camões as the place “where the land ends and the
sea begins”. At 165 metres above sea level there is a lighthouse, which was built in
1758 and is 22 metres high and the light of which reaches a radius of 48 kilometres.a

Located in the west coast of the Cascais village, Hell’s Mouth was a cave, the
exuberance of which results from its natural beauty as well as the raging sea. The
name given to it is due to the morphologic analogy and the tremendous and frightening
crashing of the waves that you feel when you are there, a white foam rising dozens of
metres high.

The Cascais Citadel, located on the right bank of the Tagus river, started as a military
fortress that included the Our Lady of Light Fortress and Saint Anthony Tower, built in
the reign of John II of Portugal, the function of which was to defend the coast. It was
recently restored and it now has the Museum Palace of the Citadel and the Cascais
Guesthouse there, as well as shopping and restaurant areas.

The Saint Martha Lighthouse is one of the oldest in the municipality and it had an
important role in terms of keeping Cascais safe and guiding boats to dry land. Besides
its role of signalling the coast and after an architectural intervention by Francisco and
Manuel Aires de Mateus it now has a museum dedicated to the five centuries of
portuguese lighthouses, thus being an unprecedented model in Portugal.

The Queen’s beach is a small beautiful beach with calm sea that is discreet and hidden,
nestled between cliffs, right in the centre of Cascais and it has outdoor sitting areas
and a lookout terrace. Its name is due to Queen D. Amélia, who bathed there during the

Legend
PRESENTATION
Once an elegant summer retreat for the Portuguese monarchy during
the 19th century and a safe haven for European royalty during the
Second World War, as time went on, Cascais became an important
cultural centre, whilst still maintaining an air of aristocracy.
Well-known for its splendid white sand beaches, many shops and
charming shopping streets and its cosmopolitanism, the Cascais
fishing village reinvented itself and became a refined seaside resort
and one of the most sophisticated destinations in the Lisbon area.
