EULO STATE SCHOOL
NEWSLETTER
From the Principal
Hello Everyone,
I can’t believe four weeks has already come and gone - we have been very
busy and productive this term! We have several upcoming events to look
forward to including The Cunnamulla Show, our Pedagogy Coach and
ARD visits, our midterm assessment including creating a comic in
English and building cars and boats in Technology and then there’s
school playgroup and visiting Paroo playgroup as well.
This Year the Cunnamulla Show display theme is “100 Years of ANZAC”.
We will be creating a whole school display showing what classrooms
where like and how students and teachers supported the
ANZAC’s. If anyone has any interest in helping students please contact
the school. We have started to create our school display but would love
some input from anyone with knowledge of the spirit of the ANZAC.
This week students in Years 3 and 5 across Australia partook in
NAPLAN. Our students participated in four tests – Language
Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy. A big congratulations to
those students who completed NAPLAN this week. Next week Playgroup
will run on Tuesday morning at 9:30am. I will be away on Wednesday
and Thursday attending Finance PD in Charleville. Sharon O’Hare a
district teacher from Yowah will be teaching at Eulo on those days.
We will be holding out AGM for our P&C later this month once our financial reports are back. Watch out for the date!
In each fortnight’s newsletter, I’d like to share with you something we
think is worth celebrating at Eulo State School. This week we start with
our Year 4 student Samantha Wearing. Samantha is an avid reader and
loves books. At the moment Sam is reading ‘The Red Wind’, a 221 page
chapter book written by Isobelle Carmody. It is a past book of the year
winner from the Children’s Book Council of Australia.

BEHAVIOUR
Our school motto is “Learning Together”. We foster and develop children’s pride in
their school, classroom, community and self through our daily operations and policies. Our school community has the following school rules to teach and promote our
high standards of responsible behaviour:
BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, BE RESPECTFUL.
Within these standards are groups of sub-standards and each week one of these becomes the ‘focus of the week.’
On Monday mornings this focus is highlighted and the expectations for it are explicitly taught with input from all
the students. If at any time you wish to view all these they are dis-played on the board just inside the end of the
room where the stairs are.

Every day counts is a state wide initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a
shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community to improve students' attendance
at school.
To do this, every day counts promotes four key messages:
All children should be enrolled at school and attend on every school day
Schools should monitor, communicate and implement strategies to improve regular school attendance
Truanting can place a student in unsafe situations and impact on their future employability and life choices
Attendance at school is the responsibility of everyone in the community
For further information on the importance of regular school attendance, please visit:

Parent Information
EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT PARENTS
By Michael Grose
Emotionally intelligent parents don’t dismiss children’s behaviour and let them do as they please. There are times
when they should focus on a child’s behaviour. A child who is rude in public should be reminded in no uncertain
terms that poor manners are inappropriate.
However, there are times when smart parents need to look beyond the obvious behaviours to get a good understanding of what is happening to their child, and to help a child better understand and manage their emotions.
So what does an emotionally intelligent parent look like? And importantly what is the impact on kids, parents
and families of this approach?
Emotionally intelligent parents have the following attributes in common.
They will usually:
Listen more and judge less
There is nothing better than being understood. Parents who operate from an emotionally-smart mindset are more
likely to listen to their kids when emotions are high, trying to access what may be going on, rather than clamping
down their behaviour or closing them down with well-meaning advice. Impact: Better, more open relationships.
Accept strong emotions
Anyone who lives with teenagers will know that emotions can run very high. They can say the worst possible
things to each other and, at times, to you. Ten minutes after their tirade they can be cuddling up to the person
who was the butt of their anger, frustration or anxiety. Emotionally intelligent parents know that feelings need to
be expressed rather than bottled up, and allowed to fester. They also believe there is nothing so bad, as a child
can’t give a voice to in a family, however there are behaviours that are not acceptable. Impact: A healthy expression of emotions.
Focus on the present
Most parents are rightfully future-focused. We focus on the homework that needs to be handed in tomorrow; the
washing that needs to be done; the meal that needs to be cooked. That’s part of everyday life. Children generally
focus on the here and now. That of course can be frustration to a task-orientated future-focused mother or father.
However, when we lower our gaze we are more likely to pick up how kids are feeling, and importantly help them
understand and manage their moods and emotions. Impact: Happier families and less stress felt at home.
Use rules rather than their moods to determine discipline
Some parents discipline according to their moods. If they feel good then they give children plenty of lenience. If
they feel bad then they pick their kids up on every little thing. It’s better to stick to the family and house rules;
that makes you more predictable, which kids really crave. Impact: More consistent parenting.
Develop a language around feelings
A family develops a vocabulary around things that are important to them, such as a chosen sport for example. The
same holds for emotional intelligence. Families that truly value building emotional smarts will develop in kids a
rich palette of words that will help them describe how they feel which will inevitably stay with them for the rest of
their life.
Impact: Better relationships later in life at work and in their own families.
At a time when anger and anxiety has never been so high in families, there is a massive need for a parenting approach that includes emotional intelligence. Many parents struggle in the area of helping children understand
and manage their emotions because we’re never had any training in it. We didn’t learn it from our parents, and
more than likely haven’t learned it at work. Emotional intelligent parenting can be learned.

All Welcome
It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce
the safe arrival of a baby boy to Justine & Ross
Campbell. You will remember that Justine is our admin
officer (presently on maternity leave) & Ross a former
student of Eulo SS. They have named their little boy,
Thomas James. This means of course that Andrew and
Jayne Campbell are now grandparents for the first
time and they are both very excited and can’t wait for
his arrival home.
General Information
Volunteer Week: 11-17 May
Without volunteers there would be no P&Cs, so with Volunteer Week coming up this month we would like to
take the opportunity to thank the thousands of Queensland parents and citizens who help out in schools
every single day. Your contributions undoubtedly make a difference for all state school students. P&Cs Qld
also has many dedicated volunteers in local Areas throughout Queensland. We greatly appreciate their service to P&Cs in their local communities. The Volunteering Australia website has some great ideas on how you
can recognise your own vital volunteers.
P&C Day: Friday 29 May
P&C Day is an opportunity for schools to thank P&C volunteers for their important contribution. Many
schools recognise the P&C on assembly or hold a special morning tea. Please share your plans and photos
of how your school celebrates P&C Day by posting to our Facebook or Twitter page or emailing
