Institutional Effectiveness, Research, and Planning Cerritos College ASL Program Review Survey Results April 28, 2015 Executive Summary In preparation for the ASL Program Review due in the 2015-16 academic year, students were surveyed in the Spring 2015 semester. There were 114 respondents to the survey. The courses serve a wide variety of majors, with a wide range of reasons for enrolling in courses from professional development to personal/family reasons. Students believe there is enough support/tutoring for the course, with 78% of the students indicating agreement. Of the students who identified this as an area of weakness, it is noted that perhaps more tutoring could be available at different hours of the day. Overwhelmingly, students have indicated a strong respect for the way courses are taught which includes deaf culture as well as the language. A majority of students identify the teachers as a strength of the course. In addressing other learning materials, there is much feedback from students regarding placing videos on Talon Net as a way to enhance their learning. Additionally, students indicating a desire to have homework assigned. Students also provide feedback on the textbook and several comments indicate that its use should be examined. Notable outcomes of the survey: there is a strong interest in having an ASL Club, with over 90 of the 117 students indicating they would be interested in joining. The additional out of class learning that could occur is among the outcomes promoted by “linking up” and student engagement. Additionally, some of the weaknesses of the course included opportunities to practice, which the club would be a means to provide an environment supportive of applied learning. Due to the nature of the survey being open-ended, the transcripts of student responses (as they appeared) have been included in the detailed pages following the executive summary. They have not been edited or changed, and reading the responses within the context of the survey will help keep the contextual meaning by the students. Detailed responses Question 1. Response Text The teacher makes it easy and fun to learn The professors that I've had are very down to earth. Therefore everything that is taught is very easy to catch on, with lots of practice. THE TEACHERS ARE DEAF SO THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN TALK Repetition of signs. The teachers are the base of the program, without reliable teachers the program wouldn't work. the instructors are very devoted yes ASL courses are great because they teach unique skill sets that are applicable in other areas of life and study. The fact that it's a different modal language than the traditionally spoken also further pushes students to develop skill they couldn't otherwise learn. Class immersion. I think its awesome learning from someone that ASL is their first language. not their second or even third language. i didnt have that in my other ASL class. A lot of signs go with their words. To attend and participate in class The professors My instructor makes learning Sign Language fun and easy. Memorization The professor's skills to teach and connect with the students. The teacher. Students working together to learn more I think the biggest strength is that we are constantly learning something new and that we review all the time. One day you think you know a sign very well and by the next day you might forget it, but when we go back to class you review it. I think everything about it are stengths. That the professor is deaf, so we get the real deal of signing. It makes people participate and learn better. Communication and teaching methods The book is actually one of the courses greatest strengths. Having your professor teaching you good on how to sign and become easy for you if you practice. Think my strengths for asl are good Its a very good course The order in which the material is being taught and the paste it is being taught at. Communication aspect The classes strengths are introducing a new language to others and communication with other deaf people . GOING TO DEAF EVENTS. HAVING US DO VIDEO PRESENTATIONS SO WE CAN PRACTICE SIGNING LONG CONVERSATIONS. Having AC working in class. It adds to our resume by being more educational and aware of deaf community importantance. you could understand deaf people more and know what they are saying Great The fact that we gradually learned different words The tutoring thats being offered, and the teachers are willing to help you learn and sign the right way. reinforces vocabulary i we have a very great program here i just thing that we we can do the lab part of the program by just showing videos so that we can have a much stronger understanding of it... challenging people in learning a entire different thing by, not talking and just signing to communicate with one another. it's a good feeling once your able to understanding how to sign and communicate with others that cant speak or are deaf by signing to them. It's quick to pick up the basics of ASl if you pay close attention The instructors. The one I got was so good at teaching it. have a grate teacher and teaching well I feel like teaching the importance of facial expressions and the wide vocabulary you learn are both major strengths Yes the course strengths my ability in communicating with deaf people. ( I think is a good idea but I feel like we need to be more prepare to be able to communicate), The professor who is very strict with the no talking in class, helps me to see the importance of signing correctly Really smart way to teach No comment The instructors are helpul, understanding, and dedicated to teaching students. It offers diff prof... Just like ppl talk differently , people sign diff Not only being taught asl but also being taught about deaf culture, having an instructor that is knowledgable in asl and deaf culture. Getting better at signing Learning more signs Learn some background of the ASL culture The teachers and their way of teaching which makes all the more easier very interactive Not sure The learning of the language plus the culture. Learning a new language. Also being able to communicate with someone else later on in life that only knows sign language. Only took one class don't know about the other courses honestly. It's more practical and really requires students to focus and is not something you can mindlessly memorize from a textbook. The teachers the fact that you have to speak asl in the class at all times I believe the strengths of ASL is the teachers are very passionate about teaching and continuing the legacy. we learn alot to cooperate in class The strengths are the ability to keep the students participating with the instructor. Languages are hard to learn, and they take practice. So, putting them to action in class really allows the learning experience to increase. Teacher is deaf The professor, she's patient and understanding that all this is new to us so of we don't understand something she'll explain as many times we need until we fully understand if Having a teacher whom is deaf and has to explain completely by sign. Also that he is very patient. I can only speak for Ed's teachings. But he is very strong with keeping everyone involved in the lecture and making it as enjoyable as possible. The visual aspect of the language helps to understand what is being signed. when you have to stay quiet during class Amazing and dedicated professors. Interesting teachers and having tutoring available. I left the class there is no speaking it helps me to soak in easier there is a lot of help, if you ask for it the professor is there to help It's all fun The strengths of ASL, for me at least, is that fact that my instructor is deaf and it makes it easier to understand while she signs rather than having a speaking person teach it because this way its all sign and no voice. We go by the book and slow so we could understand more The professors The teachers! I really enjoy Prof. Micholetti and her teaching. She has been very helpful and informative. It helps improve ask skills Its great A strength about this course is that it helps people to get involved with the deaf community. that it engages the students and that student's grades really reflect their efforts The book really helps N/A Communication skills identify ways to properly communicate I believe its strengths would be to prepare us and have basic ASL proficiency to continue to learn about the deaf community and respect. The immersion part of it. My class is all signed. She never speaks and it forces us to use what we've learned to communicate. I've only taken one course. The strength is the professor The instructors are amazing. Teacher can relate everything he teaches us back to his life which makes the class interesting and fun. Very knowledgeable course! They have great instructors that have a passion to teach about the language and deaf community. The teacher is great Question 6. What do you think are the ASL courses weaknesses? Results are presented as a word cloud, with the most frequent responses being represented by the larger lettering. Response Text Not enough involvement outside of class I have yet to find a weakness in the course. IT GOES KIND OF FAST Exercises with confused students who have not been paying attention throughout the course. N/A the tutors are not in a stable location no I think there is too limited opportunities to practice outside of class. It's hard to track down Deaf events and plan to meet with others to practice. None We havent really gone through the culture in the class yet and i feel that should be one of the first things you learn. Can not speak. I don't think there is no weakness if you participate and attend all sessions n/a A weakness from the ASL course is practice. I feel we lack on practicing our skills with other people. reading the signing presented There's many people that do not take it seriously and don't participate in class because they don't practice although is pretty easy to learn with just practice. None. Some of the lessons go too fast at times. Nothing really. I mean at first it was hard not being able to talk in class, but it gets easier. For me the only weakness that an ASL course could have, is a Professor that doesn't know how to teach properly. Well sometimes its hard to understand and its hard to communicate with the teacher. It needs to be taught for a longer period of time I can't find any The only real weakness I have encountered is having a professor that interacts very little with the class; thus, making the whole learning experience a bit dull. You not practicing at all. I just need to practice more not being able to understand the instructor sometimes None None I don't fell like there are any weaknesses . I WOULD LEARN MORE IF HMWK WAS ASSIGNED TO GO OVER THE UNIT BEFORE WE LEARNED IT IN CLASS. ID BE MORE MOTIVATED TO DO IT IF IT WERE ASSIGNED FOR CREDIT. IN ASL 1, I FELT LIKE A TODDLER LEARNING ENGLISH, BUT IN ASL 2 I FEEL LIKE IM IN MIDDLE SCHOOL LEARNING ADVANCED ENGLISH AND I FEEL LIKE THERE WAS A HUGE STEP IN BETWEEN THAT I MISSED AND MADE ASL 2 MUCH HARDER TO LEARN THAT ASL 1. I DO NOT LIKE THE ASL 2 BOOK AND DVD SET, THE CONVERSATIONS THAT THEY HAVE ARE TOO LONG AND I CAN NOT UNDERSTAND MOST OF WHAT THEY ARE SAYING, IT IS NOT STRAIGHT FORWARD AT ALL AND I LOSE INTEREST VERY FAST. Not enough class available or tutors. that you can't talk and you have to use your hands and to say certain words in a certain way Nothing I didn't catch on to it or was able to memorize a different language Books are to expensive. needs to use text more and give out vocab list. its hard to take notes and keep you eye on the teacher. the weakness in the program is that the tutoring is only offered during the late afternoon and most of us work i think A.S.L has no weakness. Everything is good!!!! It gets hot in the classroom....not really i just didn't know what to type here :/ None that the teachers have different ways how to signs words some time their not the same so sometimes is a little bit confusing we do not have enough classes like since I wanted asl 4 I had to have this time because there was no other time to choose from. We don't even have a club and If we had a club, you would definitely learn a lot more how to communicate. N/A There are none that I can think of. I haven't opened the book since I bought and it seems unnecessary as I am doing well without it. There is not enought tutoring hours. I haven't been because it is only offered when I have other classes. I think the weaknesses is that we have lots of vocabulary which is wonderful but we need to learn and practice more about how to bring this vocabulary into sentences. sometimes the grading is very strict and I am not asking for an easy grading just to be considered that we don't practice too much how to write in proper manner the signing and this sometimes you understand what the teacher is signing but you may write your sentence with slightly different words and point are deducted as if you already know exactly how to write it. Not starting with the deaf culture class as a prequisite, it helps get rid of the students who don't really have the desire to be there in the first place. Um I don't think it's weak No comment There isn't an interpreting program at Cerritos College. It would be great if they offered one. Tutoring hours are limited to daytime hours mostly. I work during the day and cannot make it to the tutoring hours during the day. Also, it would be great if a class on deaf culture would be offered. ASL is like learning a whole language or mode of communication all of its own and understanding the deaf culture would be helpful when learning ASL. Help ISNT available for people who don't have time at night Not enough classes are offered after asl level one. We sometimes don't have enough time & have so many things to learn Most classes are towards night time it can be a bit fast paced Not sure Courses should have interaction with deaf people, I think that's a weakness. Not only is practice necessary but interaction would be better. No weakness for me at all. The grade scale just depends upon three tests and a paper, if you fail a test there's a chance you won't get the desired grade. It would be better if there were more resources available to students besides a textbook. Perhaps a club so that students can meet and practice with each other or even actual deaf people. The lack of clubs/events the school has for asl. the books don't really help I believe the weaknesses of ASL are non existent. its too fast sometimes. i feel that teacher sometimes dont understand that we are learning and they sign really fast. None The prices of the books. Although the class is worth taking, the prices for the books can be quite high for a college student. More events avaliability We need more resources None As I said before, I can only speak for Ed. But I believe it would be better for him to have us practice in class more often. I myself do not have anyone outside of class to practice with and can't go to tutoring due to conflicts with my schedule. So that's my main practice time Not a lot of availability Not easy to find were to take ASL 4, 5, 6..... no videos to aid in retaining signs used that day The Huge weakness of an ASL course would be ... very limited tutoring. the school does not offer a whole lot of people, time, or tutors to help when we are struggling on a chapter/unit. My professor is an amazing help don't get me wrong, but it would be nice to get that extra help without making the professor stay longer in class. Also in the ASL courses I think they should offer bulletins/information about the deaf community events. When testing I didnt do so well so maybe repeating test more Didn't find any weaknesses. But, why don't we have an interpreting program here at Cerritos College!? Not putting up slideshows of the signs being taught on talonet The text book. It's somewhat hard to understand everything since we are beginners and without is being able to talk in class makes it difficult to ask questions Steep learning curve The time of the asl classes are too late for me I believe it can be very fast paced and hard to keep up with at times, this would be ok if more tutoring were available for this subject. A weakness of the ASL courses is that the class time is too short. Lots of words to remember and need emotion when u sign ' It's hard to remember all the signs at times so when I go home, I try to look them up on the internet but the signs are a little different. I think that there should be tutors or teachers who can speak because although it is great to learn ASL from someone who speaks it fluently, sometimes it is hard to understand for someone who is trying to learn. They need to offer more times and classes when it comes to report we have to do Need to do lots more group work in the higher classes instead of just learning new words and repetition. After people take the classes there's no maintenance for retaining the information. It would be great if there was a place on campus for current Cerritos College students, but former ASL students can attend workshops or maybe they could still go to tutoring so they can maintain their skills. It was also really hard to get into beginners ASL. I tried few times, but it was full and I had to wait another semester until my registration date was early enough before it filled. I would like to have learned of the information on telling it about the courses may be some of the slides so we can practice for the visual learners we're beginners and there are certain things we cant do as fast and we have the class every two days and we forget thing sometimes the next class time It's all fun, I dont look for weaknesses The only weakness I know of is that lack of required group study sessions outside of class. It is part of our school logo iFALCON "Link-Up" and teachers should implement that into the curriculum. I think its easier to study with other students outside of class to help one another. Not at all Limited courses Not enough tutoring times. I'm a working student and I can not take advantage of that option because there nothing in the evening The class is signed to fast Someone teachers sign to fast eith new signs we may not know yet. A weakness that this course might have is that the difficulty might get students to stop taking ASL classes. cannot think of any Sometimes it tends to go too slow but other than that I don't think there are weaknesses N/A Without practice no point of learning the language I believe there are no weaknesses unless a student can not pay attention and focus. I can't think of any. Te tutoring hours The ammount of projects that have to be done is an overwhelming ammount NA I don't think this course has any weaknesses. I haven't seen any weakness in these courses. There are no weaknesses Question 7. Question 8.
