Satellite Ground Segment
Product Overview
Dear Readers, Partners,
This overview is not a product catalogue. The main aim of this brochure is to provide a short summary
about our products, services and capabilities. During the last 25 years, we developed more than five
hundred different products, starting from the simple oscillators up to complex, space borne
phased array communication terminals or different microwave subsystems of deep-space
ground stations. These results are supported by more than 600 years of accumulated
engineering experience we have. The products you will find in this brochure are
just some reference samples to indicate our various capabilities in satcom
technology. If you need something else, something what is not included
please contact us for further information.

INTRODUCTION
BHE Bonn Hungary Electronics Ltd. is a 100% privately owned company, based in Budapest, - Hungary.
RF and Microwave R&D and manufacturing are our main focus. We are present already a quarter
century in different communication markets, including mobile, critical, defense and aerospace, - where
we have both onboard and ground segment solutions. BHE currently employs a hundred highly skilled
specialists, some of them holding academic degrees. Our company is export oriented, - around 70% of
our revenue comes from foreign customers. BHE is a founding member of HATP (Hungarian Aerospace
Technology Platform), - a professional organization with member institutions and companies having
real space heritage.
MAIN REFERENCES
In the last years BHE developed some special products for Satellite Ground Support and Space borne
Applications.
Our S-, and Ku-band tracking down converters (below) are widely used on ISRO ground and shipbased tracking stations for communication with India’s First Mars Orbiting Satellite (“Mangalyaan“).
BHE developed different RF and microwave devices for ESA DSN Stations and converters for DLR
Tracking Stations. Our satellite video receivers are used by LAPAN (Indonesian Space Agency) in their
daily work with the Indonesian LAPAN TUBSAT satellites.
The German DLR and the Korean KARI use BHE’s satellite control transmitters on their ground stations.
Among the ground segment solutions we have developed some products for onboard applications.
For example, one of the major US satellite service providers uses BHE’s SDR based redundant digital
onboard modulator in their AIS constellation. Our high quality S-Band, 40 W Solid State Power
Amplifier is in operation on the International Space Station Zvezda module.

SYNTHESIZERS AND OSCILLATORS
BHE developed a significant number of different frequency synthesizers for airborne or SATCOM
applications up to Ka-band. These programmable local oscillators provide clean output signal, low
phase noise, compact, easy handling and high resistance against shock and vibration.

BSFL12
Our innovative BSFL12 is an L-band fast switching
synthesizer and multiple signal source. Its main features
are 1 tuneable and 4 fix frequencies, fast switching time,
very low harmonics and excellent phase noise.
The L Band high speed tuneable signal
covers 100 MHz wide range with 1 MHz
steps. The operational frequency range
stretches from 1520 up to 1620 MHz
and the step frequency is 1 MHz. The fix
output frequencies are 30, 40, 240 and
400 MHz respectively.
The ruggedized BSFL12 operates between -40 °C
and +70 °C, and it is qualified by the MIL-STD-461E
and MIL-STD-810D EMI/EMC standards.

MODULATORS, TRANSMITTERS
In BHE’s modulator portfolio, customers will find basic FM and PM modulators such as: BUMT15 and
BUMT16. In addition to the basic modulation tasks, these two modulators up-convert the IF signal
to C and S band respectively. Excellent RF parameters, high linearity and low distortion characterise
the units.

For local control purposes the units has pushbuttons and LCD display. All relevant parameters can be
set and checked in a clear and user-friendly menu. The external connection can be realised through
TCP/IP port. Informative graphical user interface provides access to key functions and settings.

FREQUENCY CONVERTERS
Existing models cover the generally used satellite communication bands e.g. L, S, C, X, Ku and Ka.
The conceptual block diagram of the up-converter is shown in the Figure below.
Conceptual block diagram of up-converter
Block or tuneable converters indoor, or hub-mountable construction units are available to fully meet
the system requirements and architectures. In order to increase the availability and reliability BHE
supplies 1:1 or 2:1 redundant converter systems. All units can operate as stand-alone or in automatic
hot redundancy configuration.

FREQUENCY CONVERTERS
The Centre Unit (CU) represents the heart of the system. The CU is responsible for monitoring the
whole system via internal data bus. The vital information of the status of the converters is collected
and sent to the user. In case of any failure, the system changes automatically to the reserve unit. In
addition, there is a manual changeover capability.
The modular construction makes BHE’s products flexible and custom tailored. All components are
selected carefully in order to achieve the highest level of reliability and availability on a 24/7 basis. 19”
rackmount construction, outdoor up-converters, LNB-s, LNA-s (see next page) are also important
part of our SATCOM portfolio.

LOW NOISE AMPLIFIERS AND FEEDS
Our Low Noise Amplifiers are intended for use in SATCOM equipment where highly reliable signal amplification,
high dynamic range and steep skirt characteristics are important factors. One example is BLCW16, one of our
LNA workhorses. This device operates in the 4.5-4.8 GHz frequency range, its gain is 60 dB and the typical
input noise temperature is 45° (maximum 55°) Kelvin. BLCW16 is equipped with WaveGuide input and N-female
output connectors, it is fully waterproof and operates between -30° C and +60° C.
BHE developed a series of S-Band LNA for different customer needs and applications. Some of them can be
seen in the table below, - all listed models feature 45 dB typical RF-gain:

The triple band (L, S, X) dual polarization feed, LNA & down converter BAFX13 & BMCD25 provides the
same focal points for all bands, making it unnecessary to relocate the feed position during band switching.

>+10 dBm. The output connector is type N, the supply voltage may vary between 10VDC and 15VDC (@800mA).
Due to its weatherproof construction, it can be used effectively in harsh environmental conditions.

SOLID STATE POWER AMPLIFIERS
BHE’s power amplifiers contain four sub-blocks - see below the conceptual block diagram.
The preamplifier section generally incorporates two to three amplifier stages and a digitally controlled
attenuator to adjust the overall gain of the amplifier. This section provides the major part of the gain
and appropriate signal level to drive the high power final stage.
Typical transmission curve, the gain variation is less than 1 dB
Summary window of control software
The high power final stage consists of one or more power FET. When high output power is necessary,
more power FETs are used. Higher output power is achieved by combining the power of more amplifier
stages. The bias voltages and currents are monitored at component level. Each sub-module has a
built-in temperature sensor.
In order to increase the availability and reliability, BHE supplies 1:1 or 2:1 redundant power amplifier
systems. All units can operate both in stand-alone and fully automatic hot redundant configuration.

TRACKING AND TM/TC
For special applications BHE supports custom tailored solutions. In satellite tracking application the
availability of phase coherent received signals is essential. BMCD35 (S-band) and BMCD31 (Ku band)
down converters support 3 receive channels with common local signal in order to provide coherent
frequency conversion. The typical phase unbalance is less than 3°.

TEST LOOP TRANSLATORS
BMCU23 and BMCD43 test loop translators are used as test aid for satellite communication
equipment. These devices provide exceptionally clean test signals, making it possible to perform high
quality tests of the satellite links. Thanks to the IP67 outdoor construction, they could be installed
close to the satellite communication antenna.
