PRESIDENT’S REPORT Dear Members, I have no doubt that you will all agree that the first half of this year has been very busy throughout, and rewarding in many ways. As I sit to write this report the first week of the holiday break is drawing near and the start of the Second Semester on Monday 18 July is rapidly closing in. As anticipated our enrolments were down at the beginning of the year with around 130 enrolments. With the introduction of some new initiatives, such as the Photography and Design Groups, as well as Balance Exercises to replace the Tai Chi classes, the enrolments have steadily risen during the semester to a membership of approximately 180 and could still rise further as more new residents move into our local communities. As a result, the impact of lower enrolments on our budget for the year has been marginal and we have a sound mid year financial position. To mark the beginning of Term 1, Lyn Chaikin and her helpers hosted a very well attended and thoroughly memorable evening of delicious “fish & chips” with salads, joyful ukulele music and singing at the Gams Road Camp site where the first “MU3A Goanna Picnic” was inaugurated. Thank you again to all contributors to the event’s success and we look forward to the next one. This year MU3A supported the local Progress Association and other Community Groups to organise and present the first “Grey & Thespian Mardi Gras Festival” at the beginning of April in conjunction with Seniors Week in NSW. The aim was to lure some of the grey nomads heading up north for the winter off the highway and to provide an entertaining program of activities to give them something to remember us and Hawks Nest. MU3A hosted very successful film nights at the HN Community Hall screening the two “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” films and “Paper Planes” at a children’s matinee followed by a paper plane competition. I think this event demonstrates that we have a vibrant sense of community here and with good will and cooperation we can achieve many wonderful things to increase our enjoyment of living here. Most unexpectedly MU3A was recognised for all its community contributions over the 23 years since its formation by being awarded the NSW Seniors Festival Local Achievement Award ceremoniously presented to us by Kate Washington, our local State Parliament Member for Port Stephens. Congratulations to all MU3A Members past and present! The NSW U3A Network Conference was hosted by the Eastlakes U3A at the Belmont 16ft Sailing Club. One of the two workshops I attended focussed on the need for “Succession Planning” to ensure that the U3A movement has a sustainable future as new ‘tech savvy’ younger retirees with perhaps somewhat different working life experiences contemplate joining our ranks. Our task will be to ensure that we are an attractive proposition that exceed their learning expectations and builds on the success we currently enjoy. Similarly, there is a need to find enthusiastic and capable replacements for our Committee Members as their terms expire and they take up their well earned rest. This is not so easy to achieve, as many representatives pointed out! Our Committee invites anyone who is interested to join the Committee next semester or next year to shadow current position holders, to gain valuable experience and to build the capacity to assist and ultimately to take over Committee roles. Travel safely and I’ll see you all next Term after the holidays, Chris Klimek 2 A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY Saturday 6th August 2016 at 2.00 pm Annual Concert by Sydney Conservatorium Graduates With David Miller A.M. HIGHLIGHTS FROM MU3A ACTIVITIES IN 2016 To kick off this year a very successful social event was the “Goanna Picnic” at Lyn Chaikin’s Family Camp site. The local Ukulele Group provided ‘oldie but goodie’ lively music and everyone joined in the singing. The attendance at this event far exceed our expectation so perhaps we have started a new tradition to mark the beginning of each academic year or semester? This year during Semester 1 we again covered a very diverse range of lecture topics including ‘El Nino’s influence on Australia’ with Prof. Bridgman; Ronnie introduced us to the ‘Gaia Theory’ Contributors; Robert Dawson and Brian Jones re-enacted aspects of the activities of the Australian Agricultural Co. in Karuah; Maggie talked about witch hunts and inquisitions; John F’s ‘39 Steps’ featured his documentary film making; we went on wild African safari and trips to China with Colin Gatwick; Barbara brought the ‘Spice of Life’; Ray Keipert completed the Grand Tours of Greece and Turkey by actually going there and reporting on how it is now, and we finished up in the Cieszyn Silesia Euroregion with Chris. The Charisma Ensemble Concert despite pretty ordinary cold and wet weather caused by a deep low off the coast was well attended. This time David, Ros and Julia introduced us to a range of music spanning the period between 1856 with Adolf Blanc’s Trio 23 and finishing with the 1991 Danker’s Clarinet Trio and the 2001 Stephen Ingham’s Frampton Elegy. Receiving the ‘Local Achievement Award’ from Kate Washington MP in recognition of the contribution MU3A is making to our communities since 1993 was a particular highlight this year. Refreshments were served and those Members who were able to get to the presentation had an opportunity to speak with Kate about what we get up to and what we’d like to do in future. 4 MYALL U3A SCHEDULE OF REGULAR ACTIVITIES TERM 3 and 4 2016 DATES TERM 3 TERM 4 MONDAY 9.30 am - 1.00 pm TUESDAY 2.00 - 4.00 pm fortnightly TUESDAYS 2.00 - 4.00 pm monthly TUESDAYS 9.00 am 12.00 noon WEDNESDAY 2.30 - 4.30pm WEDNESDAY 09.45 am11.00 am VENUE July 18, 25 Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 Sept 5, 12, 19 Oct 10, 17, 24 Nov 7, 14, 21, 28 Third Age Art Workshop Aug 2 Sept 6 Oct 11 Nov 1 Dec 6 Garden Club Old Library Hawks Nest July 26 Aug 9 Aug 23 Sept 6 Sept 20 Oct 11 Oct 25 Nov 1 Nov 15 Nov 29 Design Group Small Hall, HN Community Centre July 19 Aug 16 Sept 20 Oct 18 Nov 15 NEW Writers Group Old Library Hawks Nest Aug 2 Aug 9 Aug 16 Aug 23 Aug 30 Sept 7 TBA NEW TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS Tea Gardens Library July 20, 27 Aug 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 Sept 7, 14, 21 Oct 12, 19, 26 Nov 2, 9, 16, 23 30 Myall U3A Choir Large Hall, HN Community Centre 2.00 - 4 pm TUESDAY COURSE Small Hall, HN Community Centre Myall Fitness $5 per session of exercises Myall Fitness Industrial Estate Wanya Rd Tea Gardens Old Library Hawks Nest THURSDAY 2.30 - 4.30pm monthly Old Library Hawks Nest July 28 October 27 MU3A August 25 November PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB September 24 22 Weekly BALANCE EXERCISES $5 per session of exercises Myall Fitness DESCRIPTION Enthusiastic creative art workshop.
