Mrs.Sweeney’s News E-mail Blast # 11 Dates to Remember Veteran’s Day Holiday November 12th November 19th November 26-28th Nov. 11 (Tuesday) Guest Speaker Early Dismissal 2 PM Thanksgiving Holiday Grand Peoples Day What a great performance by our Maclay students! It was wonderful to have so many grandparents and special people with us today! A great time was had by all! This Week in the Classroom Math: This week we discussed Geometry vocabulary, estimated angle measurements, and learned to use a protractor to determine the exact angle measurement. Next week students will reinforce their skills using their protractors. They will also learn to use a compass to construct circles. Language Arts: We started out friendly letters to last year’s Maclay graduates. Each 5th grade student was assigned two graduates. They shared Maclay news and wrote some interesting facts about themselves. It is a fun project and hopefully they will hear back from their new friends. Reading: Students have greatly enjoyed reading and discussing Hoot. Next week, our focus reading comprehension skills will be CAUSE AND EFFECT and CHARACTERIZATION. November 7, 2014 Science: This week we looked at AGI Big Idea #3, Earth’s Systems Interact. We discussed the Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Biosphere and Geosphere, and began to understand that they are all dependent upon each other. We also investigated Earth from crust to core. Next week, we’ll be looking at some slow changes in and on and around Earth, and be reminded that Earth is the Water Planet. Social Studies: This week we learned more about the Spanish conquistadors and how they established colonies in North and South America. Students used their iPad atlas app and Google Earth to locate lines of latitude and longitude. Next week we will learn the history of Veterans' Day and hear from retired JAG Captain Cray Coppins about the branches of the US Military.
