PDF - Motupipi School

6th April 2017 - Week 10 Term 1
Motueka Museum Trip
Unfortunately we postponed our Motueka Museum trip for Rooms 1,4,& 5 due to weather
warnings mainly the wind as well as rain. The new date is the first Wednesday of Term 2 which
is May 3rd.
One of our goals this year at school is to provide opportunities for our children to be proud of
New Zealand’s Maori heritage. To this end we are taking advantage of a programme being run by
the Motueka museum called “Mai i Hawaiki - Te Ahi Kā Roa” which means from our ancestral
homelands to our home fires of today.
th
ANZAC DAY
Next Monday 10 April at 11am in the Motupipi Hall, Noel Baigent from The RSA will talk to the children about the
meaning of Anzac Day.
We has been invited to take part in the Takaka Anzac Day Memorial Service on Monday morning 25 th April.
We have taken part in the service over the past several years and would be keen to do so again.
As the service is approximately an hour long and our student representatives are required to be quiet, respectful
and attentive, perhaps standing, for the duration of the service, parents would need to
consider this before putting their childs name.
The tentative plan for the day will be
Meet at the Junction Hotel car park by 8.35am.
March with the RSA members and band to the library at 8.50am
Two Motupipi student representatives will lay a wreath
After the singing of the national anthem at the end of the service, the band and
marching group will march to the fire station.
Unfortunately all the staff are away on Anzac Day, however I will be able to organize the children prior to the day
with how to march, laying wreath, anthem practice etc, but will not be able to be their on the day. It would be great
to have a parent /parents to march with the children and help to supervise them at the service.
If you are interested in your child taking part in the service and feel they would be able to handle an hour of being
quiet, respectful and attentive please leave a message in the office or with Mark. Likewise if you are able to help
organise the children on the day please let me know.

Bike / Road Safety
Last week Gerry Tonkin, the Police Education Officer , took Bike Safety with our Yr 4,5 & 6
children. This involved what they need to do to be safe on the road and they got to practice
different scenarios.
The Yr 1-3 children focused on road safety in the rural area we live as well as in town. Gerry
also ran a bike session with these children.
Some children have helmets that are too small for them meaning the helmet sits high on the
child’s head leaving the forehead unprotected.
Helmet straps need to checked as some children were riding with them very loose with the
helmet moving while riding.
Stopping Distance Demonstration
The children attended a stopping distance demonstration run by TDC along with the Police on
Tuesday.
The demonstrations will show the children how a car travelling at different speeds takes
different distances to stop, and how traveling at 60km/hr takes nearly twice as long for the car
to stop than when travelling at 50km/hr
We usually get to learn from our mistakes; but not when driving - the road is an exception. Even
the smallest of mistakes on the road can cost us our life, or someone else's.
PATON’S ROCK
ROCKY SHORE TRIP
Recounts by Room 4
Paton’s Rock Adventure
By Layla.
“Yay!” I shouted, “We’re finally here at Paton’s Rock.”
When I got there we had a delicious morning tea. When we
got to the beach I saw a half crab. It was the first half crab
I had ever seen. Then we went to the mid tide zone and we
found nests of half crabs. Then we went to the low tide
zone. We saw rock cod and a giant crab. It was fun.
Paton’s Rock Adventure
By Kiva
Splish, splash! Wow! I found the first olive rock cod! Then
Clara found the second olive rock cod. Then Kian found a
very big crab. It was dead and it was colourful. It was a
purple rock crab. “Wow!” everybody gasped.
Wow! The first rock I lifted up I found a nest of half crabs.
When I went to the next rock pool I saw a very camouflaged
cushion sea star.
“Yay!” I cried. We are going to go and eat our lunch. After
we ate our lunch, we went for a swim in the cool water. It
was very fun when Mr Cullen lifted us up and threw us into
the water. Then we got our clothes on and hopped on the
bus. That was a great day out.
The Rocky Shore
By Luke
I didn’t go to the rocky shore with Room 4, but if I was
there I would see cockabullies, pipis,
bi valves, starfish, rock oysters, mussels and limpets.
One day I will go to the rocky shore and discover lots of
interesting creatures.
Paton’s Rock Adventure
By Malika
“We have the best table, because we have music!” said
Rosy, as we had morning tea. I put my lunch box back
into my bag and sat down.
“Come here Rosy, Malika and Scarlett,” said Katie. “It is
time to go down to the rocky shore.
“Yay, we said together, as we walked down the beach
and onto the rocky shore. We found dead crabs first, in
the dry sand. We went down to the mid tide zone. We
found snake skin chitons and lots of crabs. All the rocks
were slippery. I was amazed that the crabs were so
blue. It was amazing to see how big the crabs’ nippers
were. There were so many shrimps, I couldn’t believe it.
“Hey girls, come and check out this sea star. It is
amazing,” shouted Scarlett. I felt so happy and excited
to be at Paton’s Rock. When I found my first sea
anemone I felt so excited.
Suddenly Scarlett said, “Look over here.” I carefully
went to see what she had found. It was a hermit crab
with a pink shell. It was as pink as a piglet. That day
was so awesome.
Paton’s Rock Adventure
By Emmy
I ran to the beach. “Yay!” I thought.
“I saw a crab,” I shouted. Ruby saw a big starfish. I
scrambled through a rocky pool. Amanda was behind me. I
stood on a stone. It flicked up and there were lots of crabs
on it. We found some sea anemones. One sucked my
finger. It felt weird.
Ashton shouted, “I have found a cushion starfish!” We all
ran to look at it. It was a great day at Paton’s Rock.
Rocky Shore
By Zara
Yay! We are at the rocky shore. There are many things to
see here. There are heaps of crabs here. I am having a
good time at the rocky shore. There is a star fish in the
water. I picked it up. Then I put it back. Then it flipped
back over on its back. I saw an anemone. It was eating
food. I put my finger in the anemone and felt it suck my
finger. It was a great day at the rocky shore.
