Passing the Torch to Florida’s Future College Leadership Florida reinforced the knowledge, skills and tools that I needed to stand out as a student leader. Being a part of CLF Class IV was one of the true highlights of my college career. The friendships that I gained, and professional contacts that I cultivated all helped me when I decided to run for public office in Tallahassee, Florida. CLF was not just a college experience, but an experience for a lifetime. I would recommend that every aspiring leader experience the value of College Leadership Florida. The opportunity to learn about myself while establishing lifelong friends were two highlights for me. I also learned so much about the state of Florida, knowledge I continue to use in serving the students and families of my community. Being a part of the vast and extraordinary Leadership Florida network is one way my CLF experiences remains with me to this day. Not only was it obvious that they cared about the issues facing their state, but they genuinely believed we could change them. I wanted to take their passion back to Melbourne and change my piece of the world as I was sure they would change theirs. Then I realized Florida really had become my home. For the past six months my work assignments have been concentrated in modeling and simulation - the focus of our more technical sessions at CLF. The groups we met with at CLF became familiar names on the exhibit hall floor at I/ITSEC, where I helped coordinate NASA’s involvement in this past year. Seeing the entire simulation industry come together in Orlando is incredible. I would have never guessed Florida as the hub of that magnitude, and my first glimpse into that world came during CLF. Clearly I walked away with far more than I could have begun to imagine* Bec Mazzone, Class V, Florida Institute of Technology NASA TechDoc Administrator Participating Universities & Colleges • • • • • • • • • • • Barry University Clearwater Christian College Columbia University Eckerd College Edward Watters College Flagler College Florida A&M University Florida Atlantic University Florida Gulf Coast University Florida Institute of Technology Florida International University • • • • • • • • • • • Florida Southern College Florida State University Georgetown University Jacksonville University Lynn University Nova Southeastern University Palm Beach Atlantic University Ringling School of Art & Design Rollins College Saint Leo University Stetson University • • • • • • • • • St. Thomas University University of Central Florida University of Florida University of Miami University of North Florida University of South Florida University of Tampa University of West Florida Webber International University Following a great experience attending College Leadership Florida Class VI, I was fortunate to be paired with an exceptional mentor -- Garrett Richter, former Representative for House District 76 and current Senator for District 37 He offered me, a Political Science major at Florida Gulf Coast University, the opportunity to assist in his campaign. Subsequently, through his political contacts and guidance, I was able to work on a fundraising event for the Republican Party in south Florida attended by Vice President Cheney. I worked very closely with the White House advance team during an intense period of planning to coordinate a successful event, and shortly after received a call from the Vice President’s Operations Director asking if I would be interested in working for the White House as a member of the Vice President’s advance team. My Leadership Florida mentor provided me with the incredible opportunities, guidance and friendship that led to an offer of a White House Internship. I’m extremely grateful to this mentorship program, and I know future College Leadership Florida graduates will be also.
