INTRODUCTION TO FAUVISM
QUESTION #1 OF QUIZ
A.
B.
C.
Les Fauves (French for The Wild Beasts)
were a short-lived and loose grouping of
early 20th century artists whose works
emphasized qualities and strong color and
unrealistic forms.
While Fauvism as a style began around
1900 and continued beyond 1910, the
movement lasted only three years, 1905–
1907, and had three exhibitions.
The leaders of the movement were Henri
Matisse and André Derain.

EXPERIMENT WITH COLOR – DO THIS FIRST!
Painting: Guided Practice
 The Fauve landscape
painting is our first painting
experience of the term.
Spend a day to explore
color painting creating
variations of one color
adding white or black only.
 Start out playing “paint
along” through simple
painting basics. After one
day, you will be ready to
continue on your own.
This is important practice with
the paints before you begin on
your painting.
EXERCISE 2: USING
A PAPER FOLDED INTO
4
AREAS,
SKETCH THE OUTLINE OF A LANDSCAPE, YOU CAN MODIFY A
REAL PICTURE TO MAKE YOUR ARTWORK VERY SIMPLE.

Sketching the Composition
Students will gather ideas for a
landscape painting. Students will
make 4 thumbnail sketches and
choose a favorite for the
composition.
 You may pre-draw the objects on
the painting surface if you use
simple lines. Drawn with brush
and ink on mat board or other
painting surface the basic
outlines. Drawing with ink
encourages you to be simple and
loosen up!

EXERCISE 3: REPEAT
THE INK DRAWING AND PAINTING FOR
A SECOND PICTURE
Many students can
usually complete a
painting in one class
period.
 You can create a
second painting or
repaint the first work
with new colors.

The second painting is usually
more original, daring,
and expressive than the first!
