Lesson Title: Mental Math – Word Form and Standard Form Date: 10-18-13 Class: Math Instructional Objective(s): Convert written expressions to number expressions GLCE or District Objective(s): CCSS 4.NBT.4 Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm. Behavior Management Procedures: Hand signal to get quiet Raising hands to answer Not taking away from others learning (refer to classroom contract) o Earning the privilege to sit where you want during reading o Earn game-day on Friday o 1st time= warning o 2nd time= moving seat or missing something like game-day or choosing a seat for reading o 3rd time= going in the hall to work on school work o 4th time= fish out of water School-wide PBS o Fish awards for good behavior o Fish out of water for undesired behavior Anticipatory Set: Review standard form How do we write standard form? Who can show me how to write “five hundred twenty five” in standard form? Objective: I can translate words into number expressions. Input: Today we are going to work in stations There are 3 stations around the room o One with me How do we write a number expression in standard form from written form? Walk student through finding the important information in the word problem o One is a word sort Match the written form and standard form expressions o One is a white board station Student quiz each other (written and standard for expressions) I will make groups and then each group with go to a station for ten minutes Modeling: Walk students through a few examples of what will be at each station Teach a mini lesson on what will be at my station o How do we find the key information in written expressions so that we can change them to standard form expressions o What are some words that mean subtract? Decrease, less, minus… o What are some words that mean add? More, sum, total… Checking for Understanding: What is a written expression? Give me an example What is a standard form expression? Give me an example Guided Practice: I will work with students at my station in the front of the room Explain how to write standard form from word expressions Have students practice with me Independent Practice: Students working at the other stations Closure: Talk about some things students found challenging Talk about more words we came across that meant add and subtract Evaluation of the Objective: Walking around watching the student at each station while the students at my station work Answers on the end of the chapter test o Did they answer correctly and meet the objective or not?
