Rotary Ann President
Pres. Mia Cawed
Our last meeting was on 20 March 10 when Rtn. Jun Bahul was inducted with PP Teop
Rondez charging him and administering the oath. It was a momentous moment for me
since Rtn. Jun is my first contribution to membership growth! On the same day at 8:00 am
before the induction, an OB-Gyn mission headed by PP Veeh was conducted at the Baguio
City Jail where the female inmates had free pap smear and pelvic and breast examination.
According to the female detention prisoners and jail guards, it was first of its kind at the City
Jail. Sometimes designating months for specific sectors has its positive aspects like March
as Women’s Month which brought about the idea. Congratulations to PP Veeh and her team
of medical residents from SLU College of Medicine including 2 Belgians, Dir. Joe Ursua as
head of the Community Service B Committee and for the five BCU medical students of his
who eagerly and willingly assisted our very own specialists, including Rtn. Joey Bugayong.
Of course, non-medical personnel as we are, Rtn. Cecille, Rtn. Dhory and I attended to the
labeling and packaging of the slides and to the snacks.
So why are we meeting only now? Are we losing interest or maybe getting tired of
attending meetings? Or did we want our hearts to grow fonder for each other by making
ourselves scarce? It is a definite NO! The members of our club were quite busy during the
two weeks interval.
On 21 March, RCB had its first medical-dental mission and feeding of children at the
Magsaysay Drive, Loakan Barangay. From the numbers reported, it was a success. As a
matter of fact, five patients were not attended to anymore as our team ran out of medicines/
supplies needed for the procedure.
Our 27 March meeting was cancelled as a gesture of cooperation to the DISCON held
in Baguio City on 26 - 27 March with the club of Gov. Oyan, RCB Summer Capital, hosting
it. In attendance from our club were VP Libby, Treas. Uwe, Dir./PP Gerard, PE Ben, IPP
Bert, PP Doming, PP Roger, DS/PP Linda and I. For the Governor’s and Presidents’ Ball, we
were joined by Rotakid Jenny and my spouse Bong. Joining us also during the fellowship
on the first night was Dir. Marilyn who chaperoned Jacinta Verdegaal, member of the GSE
team from Netherlands. For those who did not attend, you really missed a lot. To say that
he opening ceremonies was unique is an understatement. The DISCON was really fun and
educational at the same time.
So why was our attendance at the DISCON poor? It was because we had our last
Medical-Dental Mission, Career Guidance and Feeding Program for this Rotary year with
Luzon Hydro in Alilem on 27- 28 March. Expectedly, PP Chris and PP Diony were there,
displaying once more their passion to serve. They were more than ably assisted by Dir.
Marilyn, Rtn. Pam, RAPP Maya and Rotakid Lloyd with our ever-dependable SLU Medical
Rotaractors and volunteer dental students. Let us salute our living heroes. To Rtn. Chris
Faelnar and Luzon Hydro, may we have more opportunities to partner with each other in
the name of service.
On 30 March, the Board held its regular monthly meeting. Several important matters
were discussed, one of which is the passing of a Resolution for RCB to join ShelterBox
Philippines by paying the minimum P9,000.00 required from each member club. Individual
membership is also allowed at less than P35,000.00 per individual-member. As should be,
much time was devoted to discuss the upcoming Golf Tournament on April 30 which is
traditionally headed by the PE, the proceeds of which will finance the community service
projects of the next Rotary year.
3 April was Black Saturday so there was no meeting. But this was more than compensated
for by the Medical-Dental Mission held at the premises of our co-sponsor, the Abanao
Square on 4 April. It was a very meaningful Easter Sunday. It was really a sacrifice to leave
your family on a day like Easter. But our ever-dependable medical-dental members like
PP Chris, PP Diony, Rtn. Joey and Dir. Joe were there assisted by para-medical members
VP Libby, Dir. Marilyn, Treas. Uwe, IPP Bert and I. RAPP Maya is commendable for
her support to RCB and to PP Chris in all the community service activities. Joining her
were RA Sally and Rotary spouse Bong. I definitely have to mention our gratitude to and
appreciation of Dr. Terrence Pineda who always drops everything whenever we do not have
a dentist. He even brought his two lovely daughters and son just so he cannot be accused
of not being with them on Easter.
So who says we missed each other for two weeks?
WELCOME TO THE LAST QUARTER OF ROTARY YEAR 2010!

The Meeting That Was
19 March 10
PE Ben Ladilad
The RCB meeting last Saturday, 19 March 2010 was called to order by President Mia Cawed to officially start the
meeting at 12:40 pm at the BCC Wolfson with 21 Rotarians in attendance. Also present were one Rotary Ann, with Mr.
and Mrs. Edgar Catu, guests of DS/PP Linda Winter, and the inductee new RCB member, Atty. Modesto Bahul Jr., who
was the guest of President Mia Cawed.
After the official start of the program, PP Chris, the Program Coordinator, then proceeded to call the succeeding
parts of the program. The invocation was given by Secretary Gigi Maranan, followed by the singing of the “Pambansang
Awit.” The Rotary Hymn was sung wholeheartedly by all and was done with the usual way of joining of hands by
everyone.
For the entertainment, PP Lito Pangilinan was called to sing, and just like a good boyscout who is always ready;
he obliged and sung 3 beautiful songs namely, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, “O Sole Mio- It’s Now or Never”, and
“Somewhere in Time”.
The “Introduction of Visiting Rotarians and Guests” was done by Rtn. Joey Bugayong. The “First Moments” was
done by PP Teop Rondez who said that it took him 3 days to prepare his script to give the best of the Rotarians, and
fined everyone PhP 100.00 each.
The Raffle Draw was conducted by Rtn Pam Perkins, who identified the raffle prizes before drawing the numbers.
Big winners were PP Diony Claridad who won twice, PP Teop, PP Veeh, Rtn. Cora and Secretary Gigi. During the
“Members Time”, PP Linda reminded everyone of the DISCON to be held on March 26-27, 2010 at BCC. She
encouraged more members to attend while PE Ben requested for help in the solicitation for sponsors for the upcoming
RCB Golf Tournament. Secretary Gigi reminded everyone that there is no meeting next Saturday so that more members
can join the DISCON and PP Lito requested for volunteers to donate drinks for the RCB Golf Tournament.
For the President’s Time, President Mia informed the group about the recent Medical Mission conducted by RCB
at Magsaysay Drive Barangay, and the upcoming clean-up drive to be conducted by RCB scholars, to clean the
shores of Caba, La Union. For the induction rites for the new Rotarian Atty. Modesto Bahul, Secretary Gigi made the
introduction, while PP Teop did the charging and the induction of the new RCB member. PP Teop said that “Rotary
is a way of life”. After the induction, placing of pins to the inductee followed and welcome hugs from the members.
The introduction of the guest speaker, PDG Mark Go was done by PP Linda Winter. The guest speaker, PDG Mark
Go talked about his plans for Baguio since he is running for mayor. He talked about the problems of Baguio City which
he hoped to find solutions and solve them. These are the perennial garbage disposal problem, graft and corruption in
government offices, red tape- especially in business transactions during processing of needed documents, squattingmake Baguio squatter-free, safety of residents- to make Baguio a safe place to move around in all areas and alleys. He
also plans to provide scholarships for skills development, competency training to unemployed citizens and students.
He also talked about having partnership with institutions to solve these problems in Baguio.
During the question and answer portion, Pres. Mia said that we are not violating any election law by inviting PDG
Mark Go to be the guest speaker since he is just telling us his plans for Baguio. Questions raised were on long time
solutions to the garbage problem of Baguio, how to get the votes he needs to become a mayor, how to address the
massive migration of people to the city, and the Metro-Baguio concept.
The response was given by PP Lito Pangilinan who expressed thanks to the GHS in behalf of RCB then Pres. Mia
presented the certificate and token of appreciation to the guest speaker.
The singing of the “Pilipinas Kong Mahal” followed. The meeting was adjourned at 2:55PM.

RI President’s message
April is Magazine Month
OBJECT OF ROTARY
John Kenny
My fellow Rotarians,
At any given time, every one of Rotary’s 33,000-plus clubs is
carrying out some form of vital service in its local community and
often internationally as well. Under Rotary’s structure, each club
works autonomously within a broader network that supports and
The Object of Rotary is to encourage
and foster the ideal of service as a
basis of worthy enterprise and, in
particular, to encourage and foster:
FIRST.
The development of acquaintance as
an opportunity for service.
inspires our efforts. An important piece of that network is the Rotary
World Magazine Press, made up of The Rotarian and 31 regional
magazines in 25 languages.
That is why a subscription to either The Rotarian or one of the
regional magazines is mandatory for all Rotary club members. These
publications bring us news of other clubs and districts, offer ideas
SECOND.
High ethical standards in business and
professions; the recognition of the
worthiness of all useful occupations;
and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s
occupation as an opportunity to serve
society;
for our own projects, and help us feel a greater bond with our fellow
Rotarians. And the RI-mandated content printed in each issue creates
a direct connection between our headquarters in Evanston and every
Rotarian, everywhere in the world.
Your experience at this moment – of simply reading this message
in a Rotary publication – is one that is common to every one of
your fellow Rotarians, wherever they may be. RI-mandated content
is consistent in every publication. It is a single, shared message – a
single, shared experience. That is invaluable and irreplaceable.
When I sit down to write a monthly president’s message, destined
for the pages of all of Rotary’s magazines, I know that I have an
opportunity that will come only once a month, for only the one year
that I will be in office. It is an opportunity to speak directly, in my
own words, to every one of our 1.2 million members. No matter how
much I travel, or how often I speak, or how hard I work to bring my
message to clubs and districts, nothing I can do will have the reach
of the 400 words I am privileged to put on this page. Because I know
that every Rotary magazine, everywhere in the world, carries forth
that message just as I wrote it, or in its own local language.
I value that opportunity tremendously, as I value the publications
that make it possible. April is Magazine Month, a good time to
consider how this important member benefit can help your club’s
service efforts and to share the useful information in its pages with
others.
