Notes for George Tyrell: Terrill/Terrell/Tyrell Lines Website-http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~wayland/terrill/pafg47,#1085 George TYRRELL Sir was born in 1520 in Essex, England. He was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench and died on 16 May 1571 in South Ockendon, Essex, , England. George married Eleanor Elizabeth MONTAGUE. "Lord of the Manors of Bruyn and Fobbing, Essex. I have used the spelling as "Tyrrell" as this is most used by the English line, whereas "Terrill" and "Terrell" are limited mostly to the American branch. Of course, there was general carelessness in spelling in the old days. The children of George and his first wife Eleanor were doubly descended from King Edward I through the two marriages of Joan Plantagenet, dtr. of King Edward I. George being a direct descendant of the first marriage of Joan to Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, while Eleanor was a descendant through her second marriage to Ralph de Monthermer. (Dicken). Much of the line back from here has been thoroughly researched by the English Tyrrell family. Joseph Henry Tyrrell of London is one for example, who was considered to be an authority on the line. He published "Genealogical History of the Tyrrells", including an American supplement. Edwin H. Terrell of San Antonio, Texas also published a book given the English lines. Joseph H. Tyrrell says in his book, "As descendants of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile, it follows that the Tyrrells or Tirrells of Essex bucks, Berks, and of America, claim descent from the Saxon Kings of England; the Kings of France and Spain; the Dukes of Normandy; the Counts of Flanders, etc." He gives a chart showing these descents. Alexandros J. Quayle gives a different lineage in his 1925 book, showing the line coming from George's son, Edward, and then to Robert. Line back is also different. Eleanor Elizabeth MONTAGUE was born in 1525 in England. She died in 1560. Eleanor married George TYRRELL Sir. She is called both Elizabeth and Eleanor in different sources. Their children are shown on chart #2 by J.H. Tyrrell in his book, pp. 22, 23, American Sup. They had the following children: M i Edward TYRRELL Sir M ii William TYRRELL M iii Thomas TYRRELL was born about 1554. He died about 1600 in London, , , England. William m. Margaret (?) dau. of William Richmond, alias Webb, of Stewkley Grange, Bucks., and his second wife, Marjory, dau. of John Choke, Esq., of Shelborne, Wiltshire. He died on 12 Jun 1643 in Reading, Berkshire, England. Robert married Jane BALDWIN on 29 Jun 1617 in St. Giles Parish, Reading, England. He had other parents. From the "Terrell Trails": "The legatees of the will of Robert Tirroll of Reading, Clothier, dated 1643, were his wife Jane, his sons, Robert, Richmond, William, Timothy & John, his daughters Marie & Margaret. He had married Jane Baldwin in Reading, St. Giles on 29th june 1617. There appears little doubt that these three brothers, David, Francis & Robert were the sons of William of West Hagbourne." Jane BALDWIN was born in 1595/1599 in Reading, Birkshire, England. She died on 30 Jan 1661/1662 in Reading, Birkshire, England. Jane married Robert TYRRELL on 29 Jun 1617 in St. Giles Parish, Reading, England. They had the following children: M i John TERRILL was born on 25 Jun 1618 in Reading, , , England and was christened on 25 Jun 1618 in Reading, , , England. He died on 13 Mar 1661 in Reading, , , England. His will was dated 1 Mar 1661, proved 27 Mar, 1661. It names his sister Margaret and her husband Thomas Warner as executor and executrix. Also names his brothers Robert, William, and Richmond, and sister Mary (a widow), late mother deceased, Uncle Richard Hunt of Reading, malster, and cousin Robert Terrell of Reading. From "Terrell Genealogy" by Emma Dicken, The Naylor Company, San Antonio, Texas. M ii Robert TERRILL was born on 14 Nov 1619 in Reading, , , England. He died in 1677 in , , , England. Will proved 23 Nov. 1677. He leaves most of his land to "Cosen Robert Alpen", and other money to John Alpen and to "Cosen Mary Alpen", and to sister Mary Mew. Mentions the fact that brothers were in Virginia. No mention of wife or children. Robert became a "merchant of London" He carried on considerable trade with the colonists of Virginia, and made regular voyages to America where he personally transacted business. There are several items in the York County Virginia records where he witnesses deeds and other transactions, the earliest about 18 feb 1646/7, and others in 1647, 1650, and 1662. In the court orders of Charles City County (Virginia) it was mentioned that Robert Terrell served on a jury of inquest 16 March 1662 when a Negro was drowned. Robert was of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, a parish between St. Paul's Cathedral and the river Thames, where he owned some property. The following was from William and Mary Quarterly: "7th March 1656-7. Robert Terrell of London, Merchant, landed at Dover the 6th present out of the honor of London from Virginia and came to London last night and lodgeth at ye house of William Terrill Grocer in Thames street in the parish of little Alhallows and saith that his business is in a way of merchandizing to and from Virginia." I suppose that William Terrill was a "Grocer" and that was not his surname. The article then states, "Robert Terrell was a resident of York County, and was probably a kinsman of Richmond Terrell of that county, living in 1660, who was the founder of a well-known Virginia family. He died in 1680 in New Kent Co., Virginia. Richmond married Elizabeth. Settled in Blisland Parish, New Kent Co. Virginia in 1656 (Hanover Co. was created from New Kent Co.). Reference "Terrell Genealogy" by Emma Dicken, pub. by the Naylor Company, San Antonio, TX. "Book 4 p. 112, Land Patent Book at Richmond shows that on 28 Nov. 1656, Richmond Terrell was granted 640 acres of land for the the transportation of 13 persons, among them was his brother, Robert Terrell, transported several times. Richmond is again listed among persons transported by Charles Edmonds from England to Virginia in 1658, so for business reasons must have made a return trip." "It appears that some persons who desired land grants were allowed to advance money for the passage of new settlers, and were issued certificates which were assignable, which gave them immediate possession of the land, but were not given a permanent deed until the passengers had actually arrived and their names listed. This was evidently the case in the second grant to Richmond Terrell, recorded in Land Book 6, p. 369, dated 8 Feb. 1670." Among the 12 persons transported was William Tyrrell, probably his brother. According to Dicken, there is a strong possibility that Richmond may have had a fourth son, Robert, who, on 20 April 1682, was granted 170 acres of land in New Kent Co. At that time, Robert, brother of Richmond, was not alive. Nineteen years later there is another grant to a Robert Terrill in Middlesex Co., VA. This Robert married Mary and baptized a son, Robert on 13 May 1707 in Middlesex Co. Elizabeth was born about 1625. She married Richmond TERRILL. Her name is not certain. William, the head of our line of Terrells, was born in 1659. Jamestown, on the James River, had been settled in 1606, Williamsburg in 1632, and Richmond in 1637. New Kent County was chartered in 1654, so the area was not a wilderness at the time. New Kent was established as a ideal port on the York River for the shipping of tobacco, which tells us something of the business of the area. It is beautiful forested country with rolling hills and large rivers and small streams. Richmond died between 1667 and 1683; he and Elizabeth are buried in New Kent County. At some time, the Terrells became Quakers and the early family history is documented in the local Meeting annals. Many of them remained Quakers and some returned to the Anglican/Episcopal Church." "William married Susanna Waters before 1690 when their first child, William Jr, was born. She was probably a relative of his mother, Elizabeth, and they had nine children, all of whom grew into adulthood! Our line follows John, their sixth child. All of Susanna's babies except Henry, their fifth, were born in New Kent Co., but none of them died there! William died in 1743 and he and Susanna are buried in Hanover County which was their last home. He was 84 years old." Children of Richmond Terrell and Elizabeth ? are: + 31 32 33 i. ii. iii. 34 iv. He married Susannah Waters. Notes for William Terrell: Terrill/Terrell, Tyrell Lines at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~wayland/terrill/pafg23.htm#464 William TERRILL was born in 1659 in , New Kent Co., Virginia. He died on 2 Apr 1744 in St Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., Virginia. William married Susannah WATERS. Lived in Hanover Co., VA and Albemarle Co., VA. His father is in dispute... was either William Terrill or his brother, Richmond Terrill. Emma Dicken in her book of some years ago, "Terrell Genealogy", devotes the entire chapter 4 to William. She offers convincing proof that he is the brother of Timothy and Richmond. As always, she quotes many sources in her research. She says that he first appears in the Quit Rent Rolls of New Kent in 1704 as owner of 400 acres of land, evidently in the section which became Hanover in 1720 (on the Pamunkey River). A descendent, John Dabney Terrill (1773-1850), son of Col. Harry Terrill, in his last years wrote from memory of his line and stated that William was the parent of his grandfather, Joel Terrill, and William's son's were James, John, Joel, and Timothy, and he had also some unnamed daughters. Dicken says that William was "on the south side of the Pamunkey River, just above or below the junction of the North and South Anna Rivers, and not far from the town of Hanover, in what was often referred to in those days as "the forks". William is found in court records and in the Vestry Book of St. Pauls Parish. His approximate year of death is readily determined as he appears in the records in 1743 and is mentioned as deceased in records in 1744. He may have had a dtr., Susan or Susannah, who m. John Brooks and went to Bladen Co., N.C. as early as 1735; their son Isaac Brooks m. Ruth Terrill dtr. of Timothy Terrill and family tradition is that Isaac and Ruth were first cousins. Timothy Terrill moved to Bladen Co., N.C. about 1743 and he and John Brooks were associated. It has been further suggested that William and Susannah had another dtr. Mary, who m. Matthew Mills, as Henry Terrill and Matthew were associated in some business and Matthew had a son, William Terrill Mills. There are no authentic records of the birth of any of William's children. The below is on reportedly on him: "Today I sit down to write from chaos. The reminiscences of men and things so long ago must in some things be the work of chance. Sometime in the latter part of the sixteenth century, William Terrell must have emigrated from England to America. He settled, lived, and died in Hanover county, Va., on Pamunkey, a small river passing between Richmond and Fredericksburg into the Rappahannock. The peninsula formed by the stream and the Potomac forms the Northern Neck of Virginia, The Potomac dividing Virginia from Maryland. Having no family register, I cannot know whom he married or whether he came to the Colonies a married or single man. He was a tall, long, hungry, coarse man, with bones vastly wanting of flesh, black hair and eyes, brows like tow conjugal owls, mouth like the poor man's louse, and a nose like an elephant's proboscis, one whole foot long. His voice was hard, keen, and loud, and bursted forth like the very elements with an unearthly sepulchral tone; and when irritated to its tip, little mean and crippled devils might tremble. I have seen old Sam (a slave?) compress his gaunt frame and mock his shivering voice. Was it a misty night when the shrill voice struck you, one's flesh would weld to the bones like dried beef, or make one feel runnish all over. Than him the very house of mourning could not beat him, the shambles was not much power for his bed was a cowhide on the ground under a mulberry, sheltered from the broad Heavens. There and thus he and his wife dug the ground, made tobacco, bought Africans very low and became independent. He was honest and respectable, but his command came to his square, and so did others, or all dealings broke. Of his daughters I remember nothing. His sons, of whom I have heard, were James, John, Joel and Timothy. John lived in Granville, Co. N.C. as did Timothy in Chatham,......." William patented several hundred acres over time, in King William County, VA., around Polecat Swamp. Some in 1716, 1717, 1718 and some earlier. He was listed as deceased as of April 2, 1744.> Susannah WATERS was born in 1660. She died in 1727. Susannah married William TERRILL. One source gives her name as "Martha Susannah Waters." Timothy did not stay in Virginia, but the other two brothers decided to settle in New Kent County on the York River, not far from Jamestown, the first English colony in America William, the son of Richmond and Elizabeth, and the head of our line of Terrells, was born in New Kent Co. in 1659." Notes for Philemon Terrell, Sr: TERRELL FAMILY at http://www.gate.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/terrell.html "THE SILVER BUCKLES" by Pauline Bizette Brandy The Terrell family traces back to North and South Carolina, then to Colonial Virginia, and back to England. Our early Terrell family was of Royal English descent, whose motto was "Sans Dieu Rien" which means "Without God Nothing". There is an old family tale handed down for many generations in the various lines of the family. The family had immigrated from England. The tale tells how three Terrell brothers were each passed down "SILVER BUCKLES" from their father. One was a set of Knee Buckles, one Suspender Buckles, and the third set was Shoe Buckles. Each of the three brothers were given a set of "SILVER BUCKLES" with the understanding it was to be passed down to the oldest male of each succeeding generation. This was to be done "least our heritage be lost". Ruth Elizabeth Humphreys Lambert's version of the story was almost identical to that found in very distant lines of this family. The tale of the "SILVER BUCKLES" was always a fascinating story. Validating the tale meant finding the descendants and present day owners, which seemed incredible and unlikely. It was in 1988, after nearly three years of research, that two of the three sets of "SILVER BUCKLES" were located in the possession of present day descendants. One of the three brothers was named James Terrell, and it is from him that Ruth Elizabeth Humphreys Lambert descends. The original "SILVER BUCKLES" passed down from James Terrell are currently in a bank vault in Nocona, Texas. Engraved on the back are the initials "J.T." and the date "1657". The second set of "SILVER BUCKLES", owned by the Lake Eric Terrell family of South Carolina, are said to have been passed down from Richmond Terrell who immigrated to Virginia in 1656. The two sets of "SILVER BUCKLES" are almost identical in size measuring 1.5 by almost 2 inches. Although the size is similar; the appearance, claw mechanism, and tongue design differs between the two sets. Either of the two sets of "SILVER BUCKLES" could be suspender, knee or shoe buckles. The hallmark and die punch markings on the backs of these two sets of 300+ year old "SILVER BUCKLES" could, by silversmiths, be used to trace their origins. They likely date back to England rather than Colonial Virginia. The third set of "SILVER BUCKLES" has yet to be located. Due to the loss of many early Virginia records, there are few records of our early Terrell ancestors. The family tale and "SILVER BUCKLES" passed down, however, have been found to be true and concrete proof of our heritage. A few generations from our early immigrants, we find Philemon Terrell Sr. living in South Carolina. He was born about 1744 and the son of a James Terrell. Philemon Terrell Sr. purchased 100 acres of land south of Cheek's Creek in Anson County, N.C., which he sold in 1766. This land is currently located north of present day Pekin, N.C., an area of rolling hills often filled with wild flowers in the warm season. Philemon Terrell Sr. married Elizabeth, whose maiden name is unknown. They married in the early 1770s as their first child was born about 1774. Records indicate they had 10 children: Philemon Terrell Jr., Pierce Terrell, Mary Terrell Williams, Josiah Terrell, Nancy Terrell Stanaland, John Terrell, Doriety Terrell Willcox, Elizabeth Terrell Curry, Malcolm B. Terrell, and Lucy Terrell Dees. By 1778, Philemon Terrell Sr. had located to the area known today as Robeson County, N.C. He obtained a land grant in 1779. He owned land north of Drowning Creek and on the south side of Ten Mile Swamp. He lived on the west side of Great Swamp, which today is east of the town of Lumberton, N.C. The area is known as the "Burnt Islands" in present day Wishart Township. Philemon Terrell Sr. and his brother Richmond BOTH served in the Revolutionary War in N.C. Philemon's Wilmington District payment voucher, #674 for Revolutionary service pay roll #500, was dated 6 July 1782 for which he received 6 pounds and 15 shillings. Voucher # 3165 indicates he later received another 15 shillings for his service. Philemon Terrell Sr. and his brother Richmond Terrell lived next door to each other in Robeson County, as noted on the First Census of the United States taken in 1790. There was a Robert Terrell living close by, likely a relation, who had a grist mill. Philemon Terrell Sr. had received N.C. land grants in 1779, 1780, 1784, and 1791. Both Philemon and Richmond Terrell raised their families there in North Carolina and likely received some form of bounty land in Georgia for their Revolutionary War service. On 6 October 1795, Philemon Terrell Sr. sold all four surveys of his North Carolina land. Methods of travel in those early days was often by river, and migration over land averaged about 10 miles per day. As new territories opened up, there was an influx of settlers hoping to obtain more fertile land for agriculture and better living. By 1800, Philemon Terrell Sr. had relocated his family to Taylor's Creek in Liberty County, Georgia. Liberty County was known for its many residents bent on the cause of Liberty, hence its name. Philemon Terrell Sr. and many of his older sons are noted as having served on juries in Liberty County. Records indicate Philemon Terrell Sr. died by early 1813, as the family sold all of his estate in 1816. Philemon Terrell Sr.'s estate included a total of 600 acres with 550 pines and 5 slaves. It is fitting that our Revolutionary War Soldier, Philemon Terrell Sr. was likely laid to rest in Liberty County, Georgia on land that is now part of Fort Stewart U.S. Air Force Base. No marked grave exists for Philemon Terrell Sr., and security clearance into that area requires advanced planning in order to visit. After the sale of Philemon Terrell Sr.'s estate, Elizabeth Terrell and many of the children headed west with the Ratcliff family. Philemon Terrell Jr. and his wife Margaret Ann Ratcliff from whom we descend, also relocated. The families possibly stopped for a brief period in Pulaski County, Georgia. A story from the Texas branch of this family tells of how the family left Fort Mims, Alabama prior to the famous Creek Indian "Massacre of Fort Mims". This massacre occurred on 30 August 1813. The family first appears on records in Marion County, Mississippi, and then on tax rolls in Covington County. Elizabeth Terrell died after 1824 in Mississippi, yet estate records on her have not yet been located if any do exist. One old family record indicates that on 27 July 1808 Philemon Terrell Sr. gave to his son Philemon Terrell Jr. a slave named "Jack". This slave "Jack" is on family records into Mississippi, Arkansas, and then in Texas with Samuel Lafayette Terrell. Samuel Lafayette Terrell was the brother of our Mary Ann Terrell. Samuel Lafayette Terrell took the slave "Jack" and the Terrell ancestral "SILVER BUCKLES" with him when he moved to Texas. There are many old original letters on this family in the possession of Mrs. Humphreys of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Notes for Josiah Terrell: "Stokes: A Family History" by Wilford Perry Stokes, Sr,1987, pages 177-178, 180. "Josiah Terrell, son of Philomen and Elizabeth Terrell, moved to Liberty Co., GA with his family (parents & siblings) about 1800... Josiah Terrell and his wife, Lucini Swilley Terrell, sold 200 acres of land on Taylor's Creek in Liberty Co., GA, on December 26, 1816, to John Daniel. This land was sold to the same person who bought 600 acres on the same date from Josiah's mother. Josiah's land was described as joining land belonging to the estate of Philomen Terrell. Josiah Terrell, his wife, mother, and several other members of the family were moving to Mississippi." "Josiah Terrell purchased land in Covington Co., MS, in 1817, and was listed on the 1820 census of that county... Josiah continued to pay taxes in Covington Co. through 1825. It is believed that he moved his family to Hancock Co...about 1826. The tax records would indiciate that Josiah Terrell moved back to Covington Co. by 1832, where he paid taxes on 320 acres of land and eleven slaves for that year. He continued to pay taxes in Covington Co. through 1838. By 1840, Josiah Terrell had moved his family back to Hancock Co., MS (where he is listed on the 1840 census). He also owned eleven slaves." "The 1850 census was the first census in which the name, age, and place of birth for each member of a household is given. On this census for Harrison Co., MS, formed in 1841 from Hancock Co., Josiah Terrell gave his age as 70 years and stated that he was born in North Carolina. His wife, Lucina Swillley Terrell, stated that she was 50 years old and was born in Georgia. She probably was a year or two older. The children still living with their parents were: Josiah Terrell, age 23 years and his wife Florinda, age 19; John Terrell, age 18 years; Catherine Terrell, age 16 years; Minerva Terrell, age 14 years; and Amanda Terrell, age 6 years." "Josiah Terrell and his wife Lucina Swilly Terrell are buried in a private cementery near Perkinston, MS, on land once owned by Josiah and his wife. A memorial plaque has been erected there by their descendants, commemorating the memory of this pioneer couple." ______________________________________________________________________ Found at: http://genforum.genealogy.com/terrell/messages/1282.html Posted by Pauline Bizette Brandy Josiah Terrell is found listed on the following records: 1802 Liberty Co., GA land owner 1805 Liberty Co., GA Land lottery 1 draw 1807 Liberty Co., GA Land lottery 1 draw 4 Oct 1813 Liberty Co., GA 200 ac warrant 6 Nov 1815 Liberty Co., GA 50 ac grant 26 Dec 1816 Liberty Co., Ga. Notes for Philemon Terrell,Jr: TERRELL FAMILY at http://www.gate.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/terrell.html "Philemon Terrell Jr. was born about 1786 and married about 1808. Philemon Jr. and Margaret Ann Ratcliff Terrell had 8 children: Elizabeth Ann Terrell, Penelope Rebecca Terrell Marler, John Ratcliff Terrell, James L. Terrell, Margaret Ratcliff Terrell Entress, Ascenith Elizabeth Terrell Brownfield, Samuel Lafayette Terrell, and our Mary Ann Terrell Lefevre Wilcox. Like his father, Philemon Terrell Jr. served in the military. He served as a Private in Col. Nixon's, Capt. William Spencer's Company of the Infantry, 13th Regiment Mississippi Territory Militia in the War of 1812. Philemon Terrell Jr. served for one month, from January 5 to February 7, 1815. He fought in the famous "Battle of New Orleans", which occurred on 8 January 1815. He was paid $8 for his month of service, and discharged at Marion County, Mississippi. On 19 January 1815 Philemon Terrell Jr. signed the Petition to Congress, from Camp Pearl River, by the inhabitants of Marion and Lawrence Counties. This petition asked for an extension of time or exception for payment on lands. The petition explained how they were the first settlers of the wilderness, and the war with the Creek nation had left commerce and finances difficult. Philemon Terrell Jr. lived in Covington County prior to locating on Morgan's Fork of the Homochitta River in Franklin County, Mississippi. Tax records indicate he neighbored the Ratcliff family 1821-1832 in Franklin Co., Mississippi. One old recorded family record, in the possession of the Marler family of Baton Rouge, states the family "lived 20 miles out from Natchez". By 1840, Philemon Terrell Jr. was living in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Parish records indicate his brother, Malcolm Terrell, was also residing on Bayou Latanache. Philemon Terrell Jr. obtained a patent on 21 April 1845 in Section 9, Township 2, Range 7 west of the Mississippi River. He purchased additional land in Pointe Coupee and obtained another patent on 15 February 1855. The land of Philemon Terrell Jr. on Big Tree Bayou, according to maps, was located south adjoining the Rice property. The Rice property is where the Brooks and Miglicco families, as well as that of Mrs. Vione Rice. Old family records indicate Philemon Terrell Jr. died 12 Oct 1864 in Pointe Coupee Parish. He is likely buried in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Cemetery in an early unmarked grave." He was born May 04, 1873 (Source: Nancy Malissa Terrell's Bible Records.), and died August 29, 1964 in Glenmora, Rapides Par., LA. Notes for William Sylvester Terrell: There has been some controversy over William S. Terrell's birth date. Some have fixed it at 1815 and some at 1816. A website compiled and posted by Pauline Bizette Brandy, a descendant of John Terrell (an uncle to William S. Terrell) lists him being born in 1816 and Nancy, an elder sister, born in 1815. The William S. & Mary Saucier Terrell Family Bible and his grave marker lists the date as September 10, 1815. William's parents, Josiah and Lucena Swilley Terrell, were married August 11, 1814. It is logical to believe that their first born Nancy was born in 1815, William in 1816, and that the dates have been confused over a period of many years. Nevertheless, William was born between 1815-1816. William S. Terrell's first wife was Mary Polly Miller, daughter of James Miller and Elizabeth Warren of Lawrence Co., MS. He probably married her prior to 1839 because their first child, Martha R. was born September 12, 1839. Mary Polly was the mother of William's first two children, Martha R. and Warren . Wilford Perry Stokes, Sr., "Stokes: A Family History", (Portier Gorman Publications, 1987) p. 179. "William S., son of Josiah Terrell and Lucini Swilley Terrell, was born, 1816, in Georgia. He and his first wife, Mary, last name unknown, moved to Rapides Parish about 1840 when they united with Amiable Baptist Church. According to the published minutes of Amiable Baptist Church, Rapies Parish, LA, William S. Terrell was licensed to preach the Gospel March 2, 1842. " "A list of deceased members of Amiable Church before 1850 shows that Mary (Miller) Terrell died before 1850 and probably before June, 1845, when William S. Terrell requested his chruch letter, stating that he was moving from the state. He was back in Harrison County, MS, by June 11, 1846, when he, according to the marriage records of that county, married Mary Soucier (Saucier). He was enumerated on the 1850 Census of Harrison County, MS." "By 1859, he was again united with Amiable Baptist Church, Rapides Parish, LA, where he was pastor of this church at intervals until 1868." "He was shown on the census records of Rapides Parish for the years 1860, 1870, and 1880. From these census records and a family bible, his children were... Most of the children of William S. Terrell have descendants in Rapides and Vernon Parishes today." (William and Mary Saucier had 11 sons.) Jane Parker McManus, "Laurel Hill Baptist Church" "William S. Terrell (10 Sep 1815 GA), married ca. 1838 /9 to Mary Saucier (21 Sep 1820 MS). The TERRELLS came from Mississippi to Louisiana by ox cart. They settled in Rapides/Vernon Parish, <Louisiana> where they raised their family. William S. Terrell was the minister who constituted the Laurel Hill Baptist Church in 1869. He preached there many times over the years. In the 1880 Vernon Parish Census, he was listed as a farmer which was his primary occupation. " "After his wife died, William Terrell was visiting with a family who had a new baby girl. When he was holding this little girl, he remarked to someone that when she grew up, he was going to marry her. He kept his word, and when that little girl was 13 years old, William married (?) Bellvin, and three sons were born. The second Mrs. Terrell lived at Longleaf, LA, long after her husband's death." As Jane Parker McManus said, William S. outlived his second wife, Mary Saucier, and married again as an old man. He married Nancy Malissa Belvin on December 31, 1890. He was 75-76 years old and she was just a child of 17 years. (Family traditon says she was 13, but if records are correct, she was17.) William probably knew the family thru associations in the Amiable Baptist Church because Nancy Rollins (Nancy Malissa's mother) and several other Rollins' family members were listed as part of the "fellowship of Amiable Baptist" as of September 21, 1860. (Amiable Baptist Church, Ist Minute Book, p. 97, 152). According to Terrell family tradition, William held Malissa as a baby and made the statement "I'm going to marry this one some day" and he did. He fathered three children from this marriage - an infant born and died June 12, 1892, James Swilley Terrell born November 13, 1893, and Lee Daniel Terrell born February 23, 1898. He didn't live to see these three grown because William S. Terrell left Malissa a young widow on May 5, 1900. They had lived in Turkey Creek, Evangeline Par., LA for the whole of their marriage (10 years) according to Hazel Terrell Strange, a granddaughter. According to Malissa's family, she never remarried, but this writer found a marriage license for Malissa Terrell and G. W. Rodgers in Rapides Parish, Vol. 32B, p.177. It was dated April 28, 1901 and the signature "Malissa" on the William S. Terrell and G. W. Rodgers certificate looked very similiar. If this was indeed the same Malissa Terrell, the marriage didn't work out or Mr. Rodgers died soon after the marriage. When Malissa died August 29, 1964 at the age of 81, she still went by the name of Granny Terrell and her gravestone is engraved with "Nancy Melissa Terrell". She is buried next to her mother and near William S. Terrell at Turkey Creek Cementery, Turkey Creek, Evangeline Parish, LA. This writer and her uncle, Onis Reed, found that William S. had for a headstone only a brick engraved with "W. S. Terrell B1816 - D1900". At the1999 Terrell Family Reunion at Laurel Hill Baptist Church in Leander, Vernon Par., LA, William S. Terrell's descendants took up money to have a headstone added to his grave. Onis Reed, William's great grandson, was responsible for seeing that an "almost" matching headstone to Malissa's was placed on William's grave. Uncle Onis may have done all the work, but William S. Terrell's descendents gave a gift from the heart and remembered him some 99 years later. Terrell: A John Terrell, age 34, is shown living with Josiah P. Terrell in Rapides Parish, Hineston Ward on the 1900 LA census. Dr. Tommy G. Johnson, a retired Northwestern State University professor, a Natchitoches Parish genealogist, and Nichols descendent, states that John is the ninth child and eighth son of William S. Terrell, Sr. He also states that John was blind and never married. Although there is a discrepancy in John's age between the William S. Terrell Bible Records and the 1900 Rapides Par Census Records, this is probably our John Terrell due to two reasons: ages on census records are known to be notoriously inaccurate and Dr. Johnson is a Nichols descendent and has done extensive research on that family. Several Terrells married into the Nichols family and as a result he has become some-what of a Terrell expert, also. + 159 160 viii. ix. She married James Simmons. He was born Abt. 1830 in LA. Notes for Martha R. Terrell: Little is known of Martha Terrell except that she is recorded in the WS Terrell Bible records as the first born child and only daughter of William Sylvester Terrell. Her mother was the first wife of William S. Terrell, Mary Polly Miller. In the Amiable Baptist Church First Minute Book, 1826-1874, William Terrell, ? Terrell, and Martha Terrell are found next to each other on a member list. Then on page 96 it states: "June, 1862 - The church met in conference open Bro. James Simmons called for a letter of dismission which was granted also sister Martha Terrell alius Martha Simmons which was granted. Adjourned. D. H. Willis M. H. Lynch" After checking the 1860 Rapides Parish Census, James and Martha Simmons are found living in the same household as Isaac Simmons in the Alexandria Post Office District. The Terrell Bible Records records Martha's birth date as September 12, 1839 which make her 21 in 1860. Since the 1860 census lists her as 20, this is probably our Martha R. Terrell (considering the church records). Isaac's age is given as 32 and James' as 30, so they are probably brothers. The census also shows a 5 month old male named Rachel. This must be a recording error as the writing and print of the census is clear and exact. Is it possible that Martha's middle name is Rachel? Child of Martha Terrell and James Simmons is: 176 i. Notes for Warren Terrell: Warren and Martha Rollins Terrell were living in Spring Hill, Rapides Parish, according to the 1870 LA Census. They had no children at that time, but had a James Scott (age 17) living with them. (1870 LA Census, Rapides Par., Spring Hill, p. 102, dwelling #1339, family #1470). Martha Terrell is still living in Spring Hill and is listed as the head of the household in the 1880 LA Census. She is listed with 2 children, but Warren is missing. Isabel, the youngest child, was born in 1878 and Warren is missing on the 1880 census. It's possible he died between 1878-1880. (1880 LA Census, Rapides Par, Spring Hill, p. 678, #970). More About Vicie Houston: Burial: Black Jack Cem., Reids, Allen Par., LA Notes for Bertie Houston: As told by Marjorie Parker Reed: On January 4, 1940, Bertie Houston Reed gave birth to twin girls, Anita Rose and Monita Jane, at her home in the Arkadelphia/ Blackjack community of Allen Par., LA. The babies were premature and Anita Rose died the day of her birth. Since Bertie was hemorrhaging heavily, Dr. Officier from Sugartown, ordered the foot of her bed to be raised to elevate her feet and legs. Bertie was lying with her head to the foot of the bed, so when a relative raised the foot of the bed she elevated Bertie's upper body. Bertie died later that day from loss of blood. Matilda Parker, mother of Marjorie Reed, took Monita Jane home with her and packed her in hot water bottles. Grandma Parker took care of Monita until the next day when she was taken to an Alexandria hospital and placed in an incubator. The baby survived and was doing well until the hospital lost it's electricity due to a severe ice storm. Monita Jane died January 28, 1940, 24 days after her twin sister, Anita Rose. They were buried next to their mother in Allen Parish at the Black Jack Cemetery located between Elizabeth and Pitkin, LA.
