Each event has a unique purpose whether it is to provide an academic opportunity for our students or to honor family and friends. Events such as our annual Speech Meet and the Math Olympics provide learning and growth in the classroom and beyond. Moments with Mom, Veterans Day Chapel, and Donuts with Dad are examples of events meant to honor the families and friends of NCA. Parent Teacher Fellowship events such as skate nights, allow students to have fun and get to know each other outside of the classroom setting and offer the chance for families to meet and socialize as well. At Northshore, we enjoy a “small school” atmosphere and strive to provide many opportunities for families to connect. Events Honor Parents The intent of Moments with Mom and Donuts with Dad is to provide a chance for parents to be honored in their child’s classroom and enjoy a special time together. Students love showing off their classrooms and prepare something special for the visit such as a note or poem of appreciation, handmade necktie (dad) or bonnet (mom), a video, or a piece of beautiful artwork. These traditional events help us teach our students the first commandment with a promise: “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” Exodus 20:11-13 Page 2 THE NCA COMPASS Academic Events Provide Opportunities to Practice Skills NCA Math Olympics participants showing off their achievements Public speaking has long been a fear of many adults. At NCA, we teach our students to be confident orators whether they stand in front of 20 people, or 120. Graduates of Northshore often report that they are well-prepared for high school presentations and that participation in the NCA Speech Meet has been a key to this success. Components of public speaking such as enunciation, poise and clarity of voice are practiced from 1st-8th grade as part of the Speech Meet event. NCA feels strongly that this preparation is vital for success in future academic settings as well as life beyond school. Whether God calls our graduates into a career which requires regular speaking in front of groups, such as a pastor or politician, or a career that calls upon this skill on a smaller scale, such as in a boardroom, or in front of a classroom, NCA is committed to honing public speaking skills. The Speech Meet and Math Olympics are two academic events offered at NCA. These events provide the opportunity to practice important academic skills. In the areas of reasoning and computation, students in grades 3-8 take a test provided by the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and those with top scores are invited to the ACSI district Math Olympics where they join other area students who have received top scores. After demonstrating their math skills on provided tests, students assemble to receive ribbons and medals their scores have earned them. Beginning in 1st grade, Northshore students practice the following components of public speaking: Variety of timing and pitch Natural presentation Poise, stance, stage presence Eye contact Audible speaking Easy flow of language No noticeable interruption due to forgetfulness Volume 2, Issue 2 Page 3 Honoring our Veterans Honoring families is the purpose of events such as Moments with Mom, Donuts with Dad, and our Veteran’s Day chapel. These events are longstanding traditions at NCA and eagerly anticipated by families and staff. At our annual Veterans Day chapels, families have the opportunity to submit photos of those who have served in our armed forces and all who attend are moved and humbled by the long history of service our families demonstrate. We feel it is important for our students to honor the sacrifice many people have made in order to preserve our freedoms. Sharing our Faith Each of our events also provides an opportunity to share the gospel with family and friends and not only those who are able to attend in person, but many of our events are webcast live and enjoyed all over the world. Christmas Concerts always celebrate the true reason for celebrating Christmas. Our students clearly communicate with story and song the message of hope brought through the birth of our savior, Jesus Christ. Not only is this a chance for them to hear and communicate this story, but it is a performance opportunity. NCA students learn to be poised and confident on stage and communicate through music and song.
