A magazine for
Canada’s high school
guidance counsellors.
MADE IN CANADA
What Our Readers Say
“As a full-time high school guidance counsellor, I find the publication covers a wide range of topics which are highly relevant and
practical. There have been a few occasions when articles in the magazine offered insight into a current situation with students, or
heightened my awareness on a topic which later required my attention. The career features are insightful, and can be shared easily
with students. Reading the Canadian School Counsellor is a quick and interesting way to participate in professional development!”
Kim Apperley, Guidance Counsellor
Garden Valley Collegiate, Winkler, MB
“I find the magazine very relevant … that is to say it speaks to many of the challenges we face on a daily basis. It is informative and
thought provoking. I like that it is a Canadian publication that features Canadian heroes / role models.”
Lorraine McKinnon Hodgson, Department Head Student Services
Byrne Creek Secondary School, Burnaby, BC
“Canadian School Counsellor Magazine is a valuable resource in our student services department. Each issue contains articles that focus
on, and relate to, relevant issues for Alberta youth. The Fall 2011 issue cover story Transitioning to High School proved to be beneficial
in our school adjusting and developing our student transition program. In addition, the publication contains advertisements and links to
post-secondary programs and options for students that our counselors promote with students. I look forward to reading each publication.”
Heather Martin, Grade 10 Counsellor
Westwood Community High School, Fort McMurray, AB
“Canadian School Counsellor is one of the best professional magazines I’ve read in a long time. I am most impressed by the
comprehensive selection of articles – there really is something for everyone from grief counselling to the effects of noise pollution.
It has the kind of articles that we always seek regarding how to care for our students and then goes one or two steps further presenting
us with thoughts about taking care of ourselves. Ideas are presented with clarity and humour … who knew a tidy desk is so important!
The magazine is also visually appealing while offering a variety of useful resources for both counsellors and students.”
Laura Leitch, Student Services and COOP Head
Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School, Ancaster, ON
“I have been involved in the Peel Secondary Guidance and Career Education Association executive for the past seven years.
When our executive meet to plan upcoming meetings and professional development we look to the Canadian School Counsellor for
a range of topics and potential speakers to create meaningful PD for our fellow Guidance Counsellors. Your most recent issues on
Transgender Youth was particularly interesting and useful and will certainly form the basis of one of our upcoming meetings in the fall.
Personally, I enjoy gaining professional development from the articles and advertising. I endeavor to remain current in my practice and the
magazine supports this goal. For example, your articles have explored areas of disabilities such as autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and FASD and
the role of the Guidance Counsellor as well as enhanced my knowledge about aboriginal youth. Your article on ‘Online Gaming Addiction!
In Teens’ was an eye-opener. I appreciate the information from the Career Opportunity (eg: Tattoo Artist) and the Counsellor’s Corner
(eg: Facebook for Counsellors). I also have connected to CERIC and gain an additional layer of information from my electronic
subscription to them.
Lastly, I have the benefit of being able to read the magazine in either official languages.”
Suzanne Lacourcière, North Park Secondary School
Brampton, ON
