Itinerary In Detail
DAY 1: SAN JOSE
Arrive at San Jose Juan Santamaria International Airport, meet your naturalist guide and continue to
the charming Hotel Tayutic in Turrialba (2.5 hour drive). Rest of the day at leisure or to take your first
nature walk accompanied by your private guide. Overnight at Hacienda Tayutic.
DAY 2: DAY WITH A NATURALIST GUIDE
Guides are the wizards who create the magic on any Costa Rica adventure. Today, you experience a day
of discovery with your private naturalist guide who will amaze and thrill you with the wonders of Costa
Rica’s flora and fauna. You have the option to visit the active Turrialba Volcano and learn about its
geology or take a day trip to the Tapanti Wildlife Refuge, located at a mid-elevation forest in a valley
with waterfalls, a rushing river, abundant birds, animals and flowers including hibiscus and many
orchid species. Orchids are found at any time of the year in the park including miniature orchids with
blossoms the size of a grain of wheat which are found attached to mossy trunks of trees.
On one of your two days of active adventure at the Hacienda, luxuriate with a couple’s massage at the
spa. It is a great way to introduce a partner who has never gotten a massage before in a very comfortable
environment. It can also be a good choice if you're traveling with someone you don't get to see often
enough -- a sister, girlfriend, mom or best friend -- and you want to spend as much time together as
possible!
Overnight at Hacienda Tayutic. [BL]
DAY 3: CHOOSE YOUR PREFERRED ACTIVITY
Today you have option to choose one of the following activities:
 Class III-IV Rafting on the Pacuare River, the most beautiful river in Costa Rica.
 Coffee tour and biking tour among plantations at CATIE.
 3 in 1 Macadamia, coffee and sugar mill tour, very folkloric!
Pacuare River Rafting - Class III Rapids
Today a short transfer takes you to the put in of the
Pacuare River. Designated “Wild and Scenic,” the
Pacuare River flows deep into an ancient and protected
rainforest, winding its way through scenic canyons full
of dense green vegetation and home to jaguars, ocelots,
monkeys, sloths, and numerous other species of
mammals and birds. After a review of safety
precautions embark on your rafting adventure (approx.
1.5 hours). The river alternates between the thrill and
exhilaration of Class II-III white water rapids and the
peace and serenity of placid green water as you pass
tumbling waterfalls and listen to the calls of exotic rainforest wildlife. The adventure is interspersed
with a several stops for a picnic lunch and to hike and explore side streams leading to spectacular
waterfalls and crystalline pools for swimming. Take in the beauty of the densely vegetated, tropical river
canyon while paddling the calm sections of the river. Feel the rush of adrenaline and sheer exhilaration
as you face the challenge of each large wave and battle the surging Class III-IV rapids with names like
Upper and Lower Huacas, Cimarrones, and Two Mountains! Your Pacuare rafting adventure ends with
the triumph of having descended one of the most wild and scenic tropical rivers in the world. At the
river take-out, you’ll be met by your naturalist guide and change into dry clothes for drive back to the
Hacienda. Bring a T-shirt, swimsuit, shorts, tennis shoes or sandals with ankle straps (no flip-flops),

Coffee and biking tour among plantations
This journey begins in the coffee plantations, where you’ll
bike into the coffee fields and learn about the methods and
procedures of picking coffee cherries, the different types of
coffee beans, and how they produce different flavor profiles
of coffee. Many coffee lovers never get the opportunity to
explore the origins of their morning brew!
After a walk in the coffee plantations, you will go into the
factory and learn about roasting and how the green bean
turns in to the black coffee bean. Roasting is an art in itself
and you will have the opportunity to see this first hand. The
methods of cleaning the coffee beans comes next, followed by
an explanation of how they ship their coffee all over to world including to Starbucks. Golden Bean coffee
farm is an UTZ certified coffee factory – internationally responsible and recognized worldwide. Bring
good walking shoes, light jacket, bottle of water, hat, sun block, insect repellent, and camera.
All level bike riders are welcome. During the bike ride, a guide will explain the great diversity of the
forest and fruit plantations such as: café, cacao, sugar cane, citrus, plantains, bananas, macadamia,
pineapple, mangostan, mango, avocados and many other exotic species from tropical countries. Bike
riders will see the fruits in the plantations when it is the specific time of the year for the fruit. Thanks to
the diversity in flowers and fruits, the plantation is also an ideal site for the observation of birds,
mammals and some reptiles.
Bike riders will finish the tour with a visit to the Tropical Botanical Garden, which has a collection of
some of the most important tropical plants in the world. In the garden, visitors have the opportunity to
enjoy the colors, smells, textures and forms of the plants and their products. Riders will be provided
with top-quality mountain bikes in excellent condition and safety helmets which you will be required to
wear. Please bring shorts (no jeans), tennis shoes, shirt, a hat or a visor, sunglasses, a bottle of water,
insect repellent and sun block and extra clothes to change into after the tour.
3 in 1 Tour: Macadamia Nuts, Sugar Cane and Coffee:
Discover the spectacular valleys of central Costa Rica, learn
about its ancient traditions and taste its tropical flavors:
coffee, sugar cane and macadamia nuts. This unique tour
demonstrates Costa Rica’s history and culture, which comes
to life and gives the visitors a profound experience. Enjoy it all
at ease: The lovely colonial log house, the beautiful XIX
century church which has been perfectly reconstructed with
its wonderfully lit windows, the dream gardens, the exquisite
orchids, the aromatic herb garden, the capricious stone
labyrinth, the pond and the unexplainable pre-Colombian
round stones. Your visit will change your concept of a typical
day in the working fields, by immersing you in the agricultural aspects of the coffee, macadamia nuts
and sugar cane plantations. You will learn about the macadamia nuts’ process and you will taste our
delicious macadamia nuts with different flavors. This tour of ancient Costa Rica will give you a step by
step, hands on experience with the brown sugar that is organically grown: you will taste the juicy sugar
cane and you will see how the famous “tapa de dulce” is made. Besides, our guests will observe the way
in which farmers collect coffee in a plantation, as well as the drying and peeling processes. You will
enjoy the delicious aroma of the toasted coffee grains. Finally, you will accompany your lunch with a
cup of one of the best coffees in the world.
