members, High Adventure and
Winter Camp Staff, alumni and friends will
gather to review this year’s US Cavalry
high adventure programs, our 150th
Anniversary Civil War events, and look at
our exciting schedule. Highlights of
coming events include battle reenactments,
hosting “Tactical” events, demonstrations
at Philmont, and a tour of the western most
Civil War battlefield, Glorietta Pass.
Members of Crew 1872 staff the Longhorn
Council’s High Adventure Base and
participate in Civil War and Indian War
reenactments with small arms, artillery and
a Gatling gun. We also attend historic
events and participate in ceremonies and
living history demonstrations. Crew 1872
was established in 1999 for youth ages 14
to 21 and carries on the traditions of the 4th
U. S. Cavalry, established in 1855. The 4th
US served in the Southern Plains Wars and
the Civil War. We are proud to portray a
portion of this regiment’s storied history.
VENTURING CREW 1872
“Fall” 2015 Event Schedule
Saturday, July 18th, Crew 1872 Open House –The Crew will host an open house at the Longhorn
Council Scout Office from 1:00 PM till 3:00 PM. This will allow us to invite new members to see our crew,
uniforms, equipment, and part of Lt. Strickland’s display of historic firearms etc. See brief slide show of
past events, and a proposal for our future events. At the close of this meeting we will elect and install our
new NCOs.
Saturday, August 1st, Alumni Dinner –The Crew’s sponsoring organization, the ever growing Crew 1872 Alumni
Association will hold its Annual Business Meeting at a restaurant in the Fort Worth area. The association normally
conducts its business, the Crew’s 1st Sgt. reports on the crew activities with honors and recognitions presented. All
friends, alumni and crew members are welcomed and encouraged to attend.
Saturday August 15th, Live Fire –Members of the crew are planning to visit a private range and conduct a live fire
with historic and “memorial” firearms. We will depart Fort Worth at 8AM, visit the range, and break for lunch. After
lunch we can shoot a bit more and be home by about 6pm.
September 18-20 “Major Battles of the Civil War” is an event planned near Longview, Texas. In the past, this
has been a small event called “Battle of Fort Crawford” but this year it has been promoted as a “national event.” We
hope to have a large company at this event and hope to recruit from a local Scout troop we know in Longview.

October, Waco Invitational Tactical –In order to assure we have a cool, “local”
reenactment, we are proposing that we HOST an event at the Boy Scout’s Camp Braley
just west of Waco. We would invite reenacting units, but would not open the event to
spectators. This would be a large scale tactical event with battles on Saturday morning
and afternoon. Sunday we could battle in the morning, break camp and head home
about lunch time. We have the support of the Longhorn Council on this event, but on
such “short notice” we may not have a large number of reenactors.

November 6-8 – “Battle of Honey Springs” –This is a battle fought near another historic battleground in eastern
Oklahoma, near Checotah, Oklahoma. It would be a new event and add one more to our fall schedule. The real
question is if we would have participants go with us. A few of us could leave early on Friday to set up camp, allowing
the rest of the crew to make the longer drive and get to bed quicker Friday night.

November 20-22 – “Liendo Plantation”, Hempstead, Texas –This is the largest and
longest running reoccurring annual reenactment we attend in Texas with battle on Saturday
and Sunday. Tour the plantation house which was the center of a training camp for new
rebel regiments, visit the vendors selling uniforms and equipment, attend the dinner and
Victorian Dance. http://liendoplantation.com/civilwarweekend/civilwar.html
December 18, Movie Night – Had to put this in here to avoid certain conflicts. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join them.”

December 26-31, Winter Camp 2015 – Sid Richardson Scout Ranch –This is will be the 17th Year of hosting a
program between Christmas and New Year’s Day. We hope to have about 20 – 40 people this year as we work to
recruit both Scouts and “hostiles” for the Tuesday battle. http://www.longhorncouncil.org/camps-properties/wintercamps/
August 2016, Philmont & Glorietta Pass Tour – We have plans for a week long trip to Philmont
Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. We will camp at Kit Carson’s settlement called Rayado and
provide demonstrations for Philmont Participants. We will have opportunities to hike to Abreu for a
night at the cantina and other back country sites for program. We will visit local museums and spend a
day touring Fort Union on the Santa Fe Trail and the conduct a “Staff Ride” of the Glorietta Pass
battlefield. This will be a trip you do not want to miss!
