Winter Spring 2017 Volume 39, Issue 1 Setti D. Warren, Mayor Robert J. DeRubeis, Commissioner, Parks & Recreation Mark Kelly, Special Needs Director Karen Peirce, Associate Director Newton Parks & Recreation Department, 246 Dudley Road, Newton MA 02459 • (617) 796-1538 National Recognition & Optimism Ring In 2017 It has been quite a year for Newton Athletes Unlimited. We made our national television debut on NBC’s GIVE program this fall. The GIVE program highlights small organizations throughout the country that make a big impact. This appearance was made possible by our friends at Life is Good (LIG), who surprised Camp Echo Bridge and awarded our program $15,000 to go towards staffing and camper scholarships, as well as, $5,000 worth of “Playmakers Training” for our staff through the LIG Kids Foundation. This fall we achieved another milestone as Paddy’s Road Race celebrated its 15th anniversary. We had a beautiful race day which included over 2,000 participants, 200 volunteers and an amazing BlocktoberFest complete with 36 local vendors and a beer garden. The race raised over $50,000 for the program and we can’t thank John & Karl O’Hara enough for hosting the race for all these years. In November, a group of our athletes and coaches took on the Spartan Race at Fenway Park. Our group had unprecedented access to the park as they climbed obstacles, ran stairs, hauled heavy objects, did burpees and push-ups, and finished at home plate. This event embodies what Athletes Unlimited is all about; teamwork, friendship and living life without limits. This month we are thrilled to be launching our new volunteer database management system through VolunteerHub. This is going to completely transform the way we connect with and manage our over 500 volunteers. We need all of our volunteers, to go to athletesunlimited.volunteerhub.com, click “Sign In” and create a new account. Speaking of volunteers, it is with deep sadness we note the recent passing of Gene Wood, who volunteered with our program for over 30 years (see page 15). We have added several new programs to an already action-packed Winter/Spring 2017 season. They include Power Art, Adult Coloring, Cheer and a concentrated effort to provide additional social opportunities to keep our athletes connected. A few highlights include Create a Cook, sporting events at Boston College, a Winter Wonderland dance, and a SemiFormal at Life is Good headquarters. We wish you and your family a happy and healthy holiday season. Many of our programs have limited number of spaces. Sometimes, if we have high interest in a particular program we can adjust and open the activity up to more people. Other times, if we do not have enough people registered we may have to cancel a program due to low registration. Our biggest priority is having enough staff and volunteers on hand to make programs safe and enjoyable for all. If we do not know you are coming, we cannot plan accordingly. There are two ways to register: 1. Complete the registration form at the back of this newsletter and mail it with your payment to the Newton Recreation Department. 2. Register online using a credit card by going to activityreg.com and set up an account. Then go to the list of programs under Athletes Unlimited. Scholarship Information: Thanks to Newton Athletes Unlimited, no athlete will be turned away due to financial reasons. If an athlete cannot pay for programs just write a note on the registration form that a scholarship is needed and Newton Athletes Unlimited will take care of it. Please call the office at (617) 796-1538 with any questions. 14 Summer Preview Adult Programs Zumba & Yoga Mondays July 10 - August 7 Softball Tuesdays July 11 - August 8 Twilight Swim at Crystal Lake Wednesdays July 12 - August 9 Summer Weekend Getaway July 22-23 Canoe and Kayaking, Hiking and more … NEWTON CAMP FAIR Sunday, January 29 Newton North High School Noon - 4pm Registration for Camp Echo Bridge begins online on February 1 at 5:30pm. He started volunteering with our Nordic ski program when our team traveled to State Games in the Berkshires. Gene loved running. He was a very active volunteer from our programs first track practice in 1988 until 2014 when his health caused him to slow down. He loved coaching the athletes and Paddy’s Road Race (Troubadour Trot) was one of his favorite events. We all will miss seeing his smiling face and positive attitude. 15 SPONSOR AN ATHLETE [] $25.00 [] $40.00 [] $60.00 [] $90.00 [] $230.00 [] _______ Friend of the program Program Scholarship for one athlete Fund one athlete for Summer or Winter Games Loon Mountain Ski Trip Scholarship Camp Echo Bridge Day Camp Scholarship Other Amount Donate Online crowdrise.com/AUannualfund SPONSOR AN EVENT 2017 Kevin Clancy Basketball Tournament Sponsorship (March 18) [] $100 [] $250 [] $500 [] $1,000 [] $5,000 Friend, includes name recognition in Event Program Book Signature Sponsor, includes Quarter Page recognition in Event Program Book Gold Sponsor, includes Half Page recognition in Event Program Book Platinum Sponsors, includes Full Page recognition in the Event Program Book 2017 Awards Ceremony Sponsorship (May 10) [] $100 [] $250 [] $500 [] $1,000 [] $5,000 Friend, includes name recognition in Event Program Book Signature Sponsor, includes Quarter Page recognition in Event Program Book Gold Sponsor, includes Half Page recognition in Event Program Book Platinum Sponsors, includes Full Page recognition in the Event Program Book 2017 Paddy’s Road Race Sponsorship (October 15) [] $250 [] $500 [] $1,000 Signature Sponsor, name recognition on Paddy’s Signature Placemats Gold Sponsor, name recognition on Paddy’s Gold Placemats Platinum Sponsor, name recognition on Paddy’s Platinum Placemats DREAM BUILDER SPONSORSHIP PACKAGES [] $500/Friend [] $1,000/Signature [] $2,000/Gold [] $3,000/Platinum [] $5,000/Premier [] $10,000/Benefactor Includes Friend Sponsorship and name recognition in all event program books, plus recognition in all Athletes Unlimited seasonal newsletters.
