National Recognition & Optimism Ring In 2017
It has been quite a year for Newton Athletes Unlimited.
We made our national television debut on NBC’s GIVE
program this fall. The GIVE program highlights small
organizations throughout the country that make a big
impact. This appearance was made possible by our
friends at Life is Good (LIG), who surprised Camp
Echo Bridge and awarded our program $15,000 to go
towards staffing and camper scholarships, as well as,
$5,000 worth of “Playmakers Training” for our staff
through the LIG Kids Foundation.
This fall we achieved another milestone as Paddy’s
Road Race celebrated its 15th anniversary. We had a
beautiful race day which included over 2,000 participants, 200 volunteers and an amazing BlocktoberFest
complete with 36 local vendors and a beer garden.
The race raised over $50,000 for the program and we
can’t thank John & Karl O’Hara enough for hosting
the race for all these years.
In November, a group of our athletes and coaches
took on the Spartan Race at Fenway Park. Our group
had unprecedented access to the park as they climbed
obstacles, ran stairs, hauled heavy objects, did burpees and push-ups, and finished at home plate. This
event embodies what Athletes Unlimited is all about;
teamwork, friendship and living life without limits.
This month we are thrilled to be launching our new
volunteer database management system through
VolunteerHub. This is going to completely transform
the way we connect with and manage our over 500
volunteers. We need all of our volunteers, to go to
athletesunlimited.volunteerhub.com, click “Sign In”
and create a new account. Speaking of volunteers, it
is with deep sadness we note the recent passing of
Gene Wood, who volunteered with our program for
over 30 years (see page 15).
We have added several new programs to an already
action-packed Winter/Spring 2017 season. They
include Power Art, Adult Coloring, Cheer and a concentrated effort to provide additional social opportunities to keep our athletes connected. A few highlights
include Create a Cook, sporting events at Boston
College, a Winter Wonderland dance, and a SemiFormal at Life is Good headquarters.
We wish you and your family a happy and healthy
holiday season.

http://athletesunlimited.volunteerhub.com
Volunteers are the life blood of Newton Athlete’s
Unlimited. Our programs could not function without
our dedicated volunteer force. Starting in January
we will be using a new software program called
VolunteerHub to help manage our hundreds of
volunteers. Whether you volunteer 1 hour a week
or 500 hours a year, volunteer scheduling will be
simplified so all volunteer opportunities will be
available in real time. Other features include being
able to track the number of hours served, cancel if
something comes up and keep up with all the latest
volunteer news.
It is time to act. Go to http://athletesunlimited.
volunteerhub.com and create an account. New
volunteers will complete the application and Karen
will contact you prior to being activated. Once
activated you can create an account and begin
volunteering.
Help us improve your volunteer experience with
Newton Athletes Unlimited by signing up with
VolunteerHub.

Registration Tips & Summer Preview
Registration Tips
Please do not show up to a program without
registering:
In order for everyone to have the best possible
experience at our programs it is very important that
everyone register in advance. Many of our programs
have limited number of spaces. Sometimes, if we
have high interest in a particular program we can
adjust and open the activity up to more people.
Other times, if we do not have enough people
registered we may have to cancel a program due
to low registration. Our biggest priority is having
enough staff and volunteers on hand to make
programs safe and enjoyable for all. If we do not
know you are coming, we cannot plan accordingly.
There are two ways to register:
1. Complete the registration form at the back of
this newsletter and mail it with your payment to the
Newton Recreation Department.
2. Register online using a credit card by going to
activityreg.com and set up an account. Then go to
the list of programs under Athletes Unlimited.
Scholarship Information: Thanks to Newton
Athletes Unlimited, no athlete will be turned away
due to financial reasons. If an athlete cannot pay for
programs just write a note on the registration form
that a scholarship is needed and Newton Athletes
Unlimited will take care of it. Please call the office at
(617) 796-1538 with any questions.

In Memory of Gene Wood
Gene was a Newton Athletes
Unlimited volunteer for over 30
years. He started volunteering
with our Nordic ski program
when our team traveled to
State Games in the Berkshires.
Gene loved running. He was a
very active volunteer from our
programs first track practice in
1988 until 2014 when his health
caused him to slow down. He
loved coaching the athletes and
Paddy’s Road Race (Troubadour
Trot) was one of his favorite
events. We all will miss seeing
his smiling face and positive
attitude.
