DONATIONS MADE TO THE ASSOCIATION
Member, Joseph Clark Bates has donated a lovely English Tea Set. His parents bought it years ago at Heirloom
and Howard in London, England. Joe inherited it when
his father passed away. Since Joe and his wife are downsizing, they decided to donate the set to The Bates Association. The set has the Bates Crest, Arms, and Shield on
the pieces, just like what The Bates Association uses. Joe
flew to Maine, and carried the set with him in a box. He
delivered it to my home and unwrapped each piece and it
was in perfect condition. As you can see by the picture
that Joe took, it is truly a beautiful set. I took a close up
to show the detail. The Blue and Gold colors stand out
and are so striking. Thank you Joseph, for this wonderful edition to The Bates Association Collection. We
had a real nice visit.
Members Donald R & Nancy Bates donated a Poster
drawing. WE WANT TO THANK THEM FOR THIS
WONDERFUL EDITION TO OUR LIBRARY. It is
of the Andersonville Prison. It shows a picture of a Caleb
Bates with both feet missing. I took close up shots of the
Poster showing a few of the different areas depicted on
it. Unfortunately, the prisoners were treated very badly in
this prison camp. Had to sleep on the ground or in hollowed out holes they made in the ground, trying to keep
warm. They had to live in the outdoors in all kinds of
weather. Half undressed or even with no clothing. When
one prisoner died, his clothes would be passed down to
another prisoner. A lot of the men died from infections.
Many had amputations, mostly feet, from frostbite and
gangrene. Lice was rampant.
Joe also donated many pictures of tombstones from Waterville, Maine Cemeteries.
I did a search on the Calvin Bates on the Poster. He was
from Maine and joined Company E of the 20th Maine
Regiment, on August 29, 1862. He was born in White-

field Maine near Bangor about 1834 and lived in Waldoboro Maine. His Father was Warren Bates. He survived
Andersonville and moved to Manchester. New Hampshire. He was promoted to Full Corporal and Mustered
out July 16, 1865 He filed for an invalid pension Dec.
9, 1865. This was 6 months before Marrying Elizabeth
Hannah in New Hampshire. He was 28 and she was 32.
He was in a wooden leg race at the American Institute
Fair in NY. He walked or hobbled a distance of 500 feet
on duty Sept. 22, 1864 & left Mar. 29, 1865. (My Note:
Dr. Bates must have been a kind man with a good heart,
He would give bones to prisoners to boil down for a
broth, and also hide scraps in his clothes and walk by a
prisoner and drop by him. He was not allowed to do any
of this.) He also stated that woods were all round the
prison and could have cut wood down to build shelters
but it was not allowed. During a trial, he stated he was
shocked at the appearance of things. Men lying partially
nude and dying, and lousy. There was no clothing and
those of the dead were given to the living. Vermin and
lice were prolific. Medicines were scarce. Gangrene and
scurvy rampant.
in three minutes on two artificial limbs.
He died at age 55 in 1889. His Obit. In Dec 12, 1889
New Hampshire Patriot: Manchester, Calvin Bates one
of the heroes of Round Top Battle at Gettysburg died last
Tuesday. He drew a pension of $72.00 a month.
On April 28, 1865, he wrote a deposition having this to
say. I was taken a prisoner at the Wilderness in VA, May
5, 1864 and in Andersonville Military Prison in GA,
from May 23, 1864 to Sept. 12, 1864. He and his fellow
prisoners were totally unprovided with shelter. We burrowed in the ground. My feet decayed and both had to be
cut off at the ankle with scissors. Six weeks later the
bone was protruding and amputation was performed.
Previous to my imprisonment at Andersonville I was a
well and Healthy man. Subscribed and Sworn to 28th day
of April 1865, in front of Thomas P. How, Notary Public.
Listed on the Poster was also a Dr. Bates. I did a search
and he was Dr. John C. Bates, a rebel soldier. Dr. Bates
was assistant surgeon at Andersonville Prison. Reported

On Nov. 9, 2014, I received an email from the children of Alan
Wyland. Our dear wonderful father
died on Friday night, surrounded
by his family. Laura, Martha, Cliff,
and Scott.
Alan's wife Florence (Deceased)
and I became friends, and she always told about how wonderful
her husband Alan was. On April 7,
2012, I met Alan personally. He
and family had donated a file cabinet full of records Florence had
collected. My husband Harold and
I drove down to CT, and had a get together with refreshments.
Alan was exactly as Florence described him. A sweet, gentle
loving man. I will miss this Loving Couple so much!!!
Oct. 24, 2014, I sent an e-mail to Bob telling him I was working on the Robert of Stamford Line. I received an e-mail from
his wife Evanell. She said, "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Bob passed away on Sept. 4, after a brief illness.
He was proud of his heritage and affiliation with the Mayflower Society. He took every opportunity to share his line and
the certificate that he proudly hung on his wall in his office. As
a family, we thank you so much for allowing him to share this
joy he had with so many. Evanell (his wife) Steve, Becky, and
Betsy (children)."
Note from Sandy: Bob and I shared a lot of info on the Robert

March 24, 1927, at home near Sciola, Iowa, to Francis and

Warren attended Villisca High School. He left early to enlist in
the Navy so his mother accepted his high school diploma on
his behalf. He was stationed in San Francisco. After he was
honorably discharged from the Navy, he graduated from National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, Illinois, in 1950. He

OUR CONDOLENCES TO ALL THE FAMILIES OF
OUR DEAR LOST MEMBERS.
ROBERT OF STAMFORD CT LINE
By Sandy Bates, and Members.
I want to thank the following members for their help in
putting together this write up on Robert of Stamford.
Robert Louis Bates, (Deceased) Wayne Ambler, Sue Bates,
Scott Cline, Mary Patricia Bates (Deceased), Myron Heilman Bates (Deceased), Barbara Bates, Ralph Bates, Ralph
Temple.
In 2008, I contacted Robert Louis Bates, who had a good paper
trail back to the Robert of Stamford CT. Line. I asked him if
he would take the DNA test for me, to establish his Line. He
did so, and is my baseline person for this line. We shared information back and forth for this write up. The SAD FACT is
it took me so long with being backlogged to write this article.
Robert passed away Sept 4, 2014. His obit is in this Bulletin.
This has hit me very hard!! SO I DEDICATE THIS WRITE
UP TO ROBERT AND HIS FAMILY.
Bob sent a picture of himself and the Batesville Texas sign. He
was very proud of this picture, so I am including here.
With the Robert of Stamford Ct line now established, we will
start with some basic information. Then write up the lines of
folks who are in the Robert line. This will be in several Bulletins.
In the Sept. 1908 Bulletin it begins with the Robert Line. Later
on in the Apr. 1927, page 168 it has “A New Bates Problem”
Myron H. Bates said that a manuscript extract from the Genealogical History of Lycoming Co. PA in which it claimed that
THE BATES ASSOCIATION FOUNDED IN 1907

Genealogies by Edith M. Wicks. Barbour Index Entries Stamford Bates. There are many dates etc. that do not agree. Wives
names that seem to be with wrong husbands etc. I worked and
worked on this line trying to put all info in the right place. If I
just could not find proof of a date, then I put both names and
dates in the information. IF YOU SEE ANY MISTAKES
PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!
Myron Heilman Bates wrote on the Robert Line in the Older
Bates Bulletins, and I compared his work with others.
Robert came from Halifax England in 1630. He was born Abt.
1611. He was part of the Richard Saltonstall colonies. Saltonstall was one of 6 pntentees of the Colony of Mass. Bay. In
1630 he sent abt 2500 English Puritans, and most settled at
Watertown. (Early records spell it Waterton). In 1635, 7 families left Watertown and went to Wethersfield., Robert being
one. Six years later land was offered to 28 Families within
New Haven Colony at Rippowams (now Stamford) Robert
was one of these Families. He lived and died there.
John Bates of Stamford CT. was a descendant of James Bates
of Dorchester, instead of Robert of Stamford. (MY NOTE)
Since the Clement/James DNA does not match the Robert Line
then I can say this cannot be true.
In the Aug. 1937 Bulletin page 25 it has a paragraph. It stated
that Suzanne Holt cannot be the wife of Robert Bates of Stamford. She died in 1674 and Robert 1675. Her estate went to her
Holt children and not to her husband, which it would have if
she was married, her husband was Nathaniel who d in 1673.
Robert was married to an Unknown for his first wife. Robert
had marr. Second Margaret Weeche Cross, widow of William,
Cross of Fairfield. Quite a few places have him married Third
to Susannah Smith Holt, after 1657, daughter of Simon Hoyt,
she died in 1674.
I studied all records from the Bates Bulletins, Registration of

When compiling this Line I ended up with 62 pages. So I
am taking each member who contributed and put their line
in the Bulletins. Not enough room for all of the pages.
Anyone wanting the entire pages I can send as a Gedcom,
or Family Tree if you have? As I am picking up each one
the numbering don't cont. Robert 1 John 2nd etc. It picks
up the person as # 1, so I am listing the line starting with
Robert.
We will begin with ROBERT LOUIS BATES: His line is 1.
Robert--2. John--3. John--4. Nehemiah--5. Nehemiah--6.
Jacob--7. Ebenezer--8. William Edward--9. Ralph Waldo-10. Robert Louis
Generation 1.
ROBERT BATES-1 was born in 1611 in England. He died on
11 Jun 1675 in Stamford CT.
Wife Unknown
They had the following children:
2. John Bates was born in 1641 in Weathersfield, CT. He
Page 44
most of them settled at Watertown. Early documents say Waterton. He was living in Watertown Mass. until 1636 when he
moved on to Wethersfield CT. where he stayed until becoming
one of the original settlers of Stamford CT. in 1641. He signed
up to repay 3 bushels of corn and one pound of the 100-bushel
purchase price. He received a grant of ten acres. He settled in
Stamford CT. on North St., which is now Summer St., between
Spring and Broad Sts. (STAMFORD FIRST CALLED
TOQUAMS, THEN RIPPOWAMS, THEN STAMFORD.)
Robert died in the night June 11, 1675. In his will probated
Nov. 1, 16756 he makes bequests to his son John Bates and
daughter Mary Bates, wife of Abraham Ambler and a stepson
John Cross. (By this time John Cross and Sarah Bates were
