SKI MYSTERY TREASURE HUNT ON SKIS Participate and win some Winter prizes for next season! (Ski lift passes, snowshoe rentals, etc) Poping, all fresh and bright eyed, lives in Zürich zoo, along with her companion, the proud Emperor penguin Roling. They are awaiting a happy event. With Emperor penguins, it is their instinct to travel far into the heart of the Antarctic to lay their eggs. Then, Mum sets out in search of food for their future offspring and Dad stays behind to look after the egg. From Zürich, our couple escapes the zoo and sets out towards the south. Unfortunately, the keepers catch Roling and he is put back into his enclosure before being able to leave the zoo. Brave little Poping continues her route alone. At least she knows where the south is! One day, she hears about the legendary Ours (Bear) run and her thoughts go like this: Run = path followed by generations of penguins before her. Ours (bear) = that great big white beast who lives in the freezing cold enclosure opposite hers. And that is how she arrives in Veysonnaz, hidden in a freezer lorry. When she arrives, she lays her egg in the ‘forêt de l’Ours’ forest between two pine trees. But now she’s got a bit of a problem, because it is very important that the egg be kept warm under Dad’s feathers, so she needs to go back to the zoo to get Roling. Luckily the animals of the region, curious but willing to help, offer to keep the egg warm during her absence: The stag majestic, who keeps an eye on the crafty fox, the cow who is willing to come out of her cosy stable in the middle of winter, the marmot who breaks his winter slumber, the bear that nobody has ever seen but who shows his face when he can be of help, master owl who tells egg stories to pass the time, the wolf who luckily doesn’t like eating eggs, and the generous little squirrel. They all take it in turns to look after the egg until Poping comes back with Roling. They have just arrived, ouf because the shell is starting to crack. Mum and Dad penguin have got back just in time to see their baby being born. This fluffy little ball is welcomed warmly, all the animals in Veysonnaz are celebrating! Each animal sat on the egg for a certain number of days, now it’s up to you to find out how many days Poping was away and in so doing find out how long the incubation of an Emperor penguin egg is.
