These are not just a collection of words but are a snapshot of who we are, what we stand for, and where we want to go. St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Mission Statement To provide the learners with a living example of life according to Catholic principles and be a catalyst of Christian formation in the pupils. To provide an environment that is boldly innovative, superlatively academic and openly Christian and Catholic so that pupils may be encouraged toward a commitment to Christ. To promote Christian community that will involve pupils, parents, priests, and the school as a vibrant, living community that integrates the teaching of Christ. To implement an educational philosophy and methodology consistent with the guidelines of the Ministry of Education, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, and the school. The pages which follow contain specific details on many policies, procedures, and regulations. What is most important for you to understand is that everything outlined in this agenda is based on our school’s stated objectives. Everything which follows plays an important role in creating and maintaining a learning environment which gives us the best opportunity of reaching our goals. Teaching wisdom, teaching love creating a world in God’s image. 4 BOARD THEME Our board theme for September 2013 to September 2015 is “Witnesses to Hope … Remembering – Celebrating – Believing”. The theme has as its inspiration the Scripture passage from Paul’s Letter to the Romans (Romans 14:17), “For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but justice, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” “Shalom” is used to both greet people and to bid them farewell, and it means much more than peace, hello or goodbye. Living in “shalom” means that our lives are balanced and that we relate to the whole of what surrounds us with a peaceful spirit. The term conveys what God planned for creation. It means that we are in a good relationship with God, with ourselves and our bodies, with our neighbours (all other people), and with the earth. There are two distinct dimensions to shalom. To have shalom means to have a life that is put together, full, rich, and abundant as God intended it. To bring shalom means to bring healing and wholeness to lives, to people, to the world. Amen 5 RELIGIOUS DIMENSION St. Francis Xavier is a Catholic high school – meaning that the Catholic faith plays a central role in the tone and ambience of school life. One of the most fundamental teachings of Christianity is that every human person has immense value in the eyes of God. This reality gives Catholic educators the zeal to ensure that every student is respected as a child of God, and given the opportunities necessary to develop his/her God-given potential. Our school is named after St. Francis Xavier, a man with extraordinary zeal for the Catholic faith, who spent his life educating people from all walks of life about God. Christian educators, following in the example of St. Francis, also strive to provide every young person with the best education possible. For there is nothing more noble, or more pleasing to God, than to form and educate a new generation. FRANCIS XAVIER CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT To promote a close union among home, school, and church in order to provide an awareness of the role of the student, parent, teacher, clergy and school council in providing the best possible Catholic education. To act as liaison between parents, school and the School Board. To promote and serve as a forum for the discussion of matters of mutual interest or concern to the school, the students, and the parents. To work in an advisory capacity with the school principal and staff towards the improvement of school programs and facilities. To ensure that all parents are familiar with facilities and services available so that their children get the maximum use of the school system. 6 To keep abreast of all matters affecting the education of our children and to provide, when deemed necessary by the Council, input into the political process at all levels, including local, regional, provincial and federal, for improvement of our children’s education. ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION STATEMENT We, the staff and students of St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School, are committed to protecting the environment by practicing the 3 Rs, that is, to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE. We will strive to reduce paper waste and to pack LITTERLESS LUNCHES whenever possible. A MESSAGE TO PARENTS/GUARDIANS We sincerely believe that the student agenda can become an invaluable tool in helping your child become a better student. This can only happen, however, if all the members of the partnership – parents, staff, and students – make full use of its potential. Please make yourself aware of the contents of this book, as both your input and your participation are essential. You can use the agenda to communicate with staff regarding any matter of interest. The onus is on the student to deliver the messages going either way. The calendar pages in the student agenda are to be used daily by the student to plan and organize the completion of ongoing assignments and special projects. You are asked to use this section to remain informed of your child’s progress on a day to day basis. CATHOLIC CODE OF CONDUCT As a Catholic community, it is the mission of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario to shape Catholic education within our schools in keeping with Gospel values and the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. Through a variety of programs and learning experiences, all schools will promote an environment where conflict and difference can be addressed in a manner characterized by respect and compassion. 7 CDSBEO Schools : Supporting a Strengths Based Approach to Building Resiliency “Resiliency is an ability to spring back and adapt to life’s challenges with an attitude of hope and optimism.” All schools in CDSBEO are working to develop a strengths-based culture of practice where students are nurtured towards positive change. In order to accomplish this we are partnering with Resiliency Initiatives. Students participate in a survey designed around 31 Developmental Strengths which research indicates are key factors in building resiliency in an individual. Information from the resiliency survey is used to empower individuals and school teams to engage in, and better understand the strengths or skills that are essential for navigating life’s challenges and becoming healthy adults. RESPONSIBLITIES OF ST. FRANCIS XAVIER STUDENTS Students will: 1. Be on time for class. 2. Come to class prepared to work. Bring appropriate texts and materials. 3. Pay attention in class. 4. Listen and follow instructions. (Ask for assistance if required.) 5. Work diligently on assigned material. 6. Show respect for peers, staff and visitors by observing the following guidelines: a) Allow other people to express their ideas. b) Listen attentively before sharing your own ideas. c) Raise your hand and be acknowledged by the teacher before speaking. d) Allow others their personal space. e) Respect property, i.e. take pride in the school, clean up the school, clean up after oneself and others in the school and grounds, report damage to school property, keep lockers neat and tidy, and take care of school texts and library books. f) Use respectful language and refrain from the use of derogatory terms. g) Keep horseplay out of the school environment. h) Know and follow safety regulations. 7. Complete all work, meeting the expectations outlined. 8. Work quietly on approved activities when finished with assigned materials. 9. Take responsibility for the work area and stay there unless granted permission to be elsewhere. 10. Use class time as learning time (e.g. reserve trips to the washroom and fountain for breaks). 11. Cooperate with staff requests. 12. Attempt to deal with interpersonal difficulties in a positive way, and/or ask for help to sort out problems. 8 BULLYING The Ministry of Education defines bullying as repeated, aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or individuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person’s body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying is further defined as taking different forms, physical, verbal or social. CYBERBULLYING The Ministry’s definition also recognizes cyberbullying. The definition states bullying “may also occur through the use of technology” such as e-mail, cellphones, text messaging, internet websites or other technology. HARASSMENT OF OTHERS Students are expected to be courteous and considerate in dealing with other students and staff members. Verbal, physical or sexual harassment will not be tolerated. Verbal abuse, intimidation, extortion, pushing and shoving and the use of physical force on others are all examples of harassment and will be dealt with severely. Parents and/or police will be notified and a school suspension may result. Fighting on school property or while attending a school function off-campus will result in a suspension and the police will be notified. Any students who utter a death threat will automatically be suspended – a parent and the OPP will be contacted. A Mental Health Risk Assessment may be required (conducted by a qualified Psychologist) prior to the student being re-admitted to the school. CONSEQUENCES FOR BULLYING/HARASSMENT Incidents of bullying will be taken very seriously and will be referred to administration. Consequences could include, but are not limited to, suspension, expulsion and formal charges being laid by police. POSSESSION OR USE OF TOBACCO The Smoke Free Ontario Act prohibits smoking on school property. Any student who is found to be smoking on school property or buses will be reported to the Tobacco Enforcement Officer which could result in a fine of approximately $300. Any student smoking on a field trip will be referred to administration. Board policy stipulates that students under the age of 16 may not be in possession of tobacco on school property. Students under the age of 16 are prohibited from going to the designated smoking area on Legault Road. 9 ALCOHOL AND ILLICIT SUBSTANCES Bringing or consuming or being under the influence of alcohol or illicit substances on the school campus is forbidden and is unlawful under the Criminal Code and the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario regulations. This applies to all school functions, school-sponsored trips and graduation formals whether they be held at the school or in some other location. All school-sponsored events involving students and school personnel shall be alcohol and drug free. Enforcement of this regulation will be in accordance with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario alcohol policy. Since it is illegal to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, students will be suspended from school and the police may be notified. The school reserves the right to send home students in violation of this regulation and to deny them further participation in school-relation functions or membership in extracurricular programs. ILLICIT ARTICLES Objects, which may be considered injurious to others, must not be brought to school. Any student who is apprehended with an object considered dangerous is liable to be suspended and the police will be notified. ATTENDANCE/LATES/SKIPPED CLASSES/ATTENDANCE POLICY Parents are to telephone the school no later than 9:00 a.m. on the day of absence explaining the reason. Telephone calls may be used to verify an absence. When a student is aware that he/she is to be absent on a certain day, a note explaining the reason for the absence should be brought to the student’s teachers and the main office. It is the responsibility of students to ensure they obtain, from their teachers, the information regarding material covered by the class during their absence. Students who wish to participate in an extracurricular event, or practice, e.g. team sport, club, school play, etc., on any given school day must be in attendance for scheduled classes on the day of the event or practice (medical/dental appointments excepted). Students will not be permitted to attend after school activities if they have been marked absent for that day, unless a medical note is provided. Since regular attendance is a vital aspect of a student’s success, the following procedure will be used each semester: Parents will be informed by the student’s teacher after five absences. After seven absences, the student will be called in for an interview and the parent/guardian will be contacted. After 11 absences, the student and his/her parents will be required to attend a meeting to address absenteeism/lateness and a plan will be put into place. The Supervisory Officer will be notified. After 15 absences, the student and his/her parents will be required to attend a meeting to address absenteeism. The parent/guardian will be advised of the Ministry instructional requirement to receive course credit and that prolonged absenteeism can result in not receiving a credit. 10 DEALING WITH LATES School begins at 9:10 a.m. Students arriving late at school from appointments, etc., are to be signed in by a parent/guardian at Student Services. If the late is for a legitimate reason (i.e. medical or dental appointment, etc.) then an excused late will be recorded. If the late cannot be justified, then an unexcused late is recorded. Procedures 1. Students still in the halls at 9:10 a.m. are officially late and must stand and listen carefully while O Canada and the morning prayer are completed. 2. Students who have a note or phone call from their parent/guardian excusing their lateness for legitimate reasons (i.e. medical or dental appointments, etc.) will be granted an excused late. 3. Consequences for being late for class, are as follows: 1st late – the student will be given a verbal warning (must be recorded). 2nd late – the student will again be given a verbal warning (must be recorded). 3rd late – the parents will be contacted and one lunchtime detention will be issued. 4th late – the parents will be contacted and a late detention, or 3 lunchtime detentions, will be assigned. 5th late – the student will be referred to the Principal or Vice Principal for further action (or participation mark affected.) Subsequent late – the student will be referred to the Principal or Vice Principal for further action (may result in a one day suspension, parent meeting, etc.) NOTE: The accumulation of lates begins at the start of each semester. MAINTENANCE OF STUDIES DURING ABSENCE Students who are absent are expected to assume the responsibility for missed assignments. Students who miss class tests or assignment due dates because of an absence must provide the teacher with a valid written reason if they wish to have an opportunity for a “make-up”. Students who miss an examination due to an illness must supply the office with a doctor’s certificate. CONSEQUENCES FOR SKIPPED CLASSES Students who skip class will receive an after school detention. Subsequent skips, the student will receive another after school detention and parents will be called for a meeting (possible course credit will NOT be granted). NOTE: The accumulation of skips begins at the start of each semester. DETENTIONS Detentions may be issued by a teacher or the school administration. It is the responsibility of the student to report at the designated time and place. If one lunch detention is not served, student will receive an additional lunch detention. If these detentions are not served, an after-school detention will be issued and the teacher will contact the parent. If at that point the after-school detention is not served the matter will be referred to the principal. NOTE: It is the student’s responsibility to sign up for the late bus if serving an after-school detention. 11 SUSPENSIONS Any student suspended from school will not be permitted to attend school functions on or off school property. PLAGIARISM & CHEATING Expected Behaviour Students are expected to demonstrate academic honesty by relying on their own efforts and by doing their own work to the best of their ability. When using another source to complete an assignment, students are obligated to acknowledge the source in writing in the manner appropriate to the subject area or assignment. Check with your teacher for clarification. Reasons for Expected Behaivour By committing an act of dishonesty, such as plagiarism or cheating, the student jeopardizes the teacher-student relationship which must be built on trust. Without such trust, the teacher is unable to provide the student with the independence and flexibility necessary to a healthy learning environment. FAILURE TO FULFILL ANY OF THESE REQUIREMENTS MAY RESULT IN FAILURE OR AN INCOMPLETE GRADE. PLAGIARISM If a grade 9 or 10 student plagiarizes a summative task: First incident: The teacher will report the student to school administration. The teacher, administrator, and student will meet to implement a plan of action for completing the work and educating the student as required. The administrator will communicate with the parent that plagiarism has occurred and discuss the consequences and next steps. Second incident: The teacher will report the student to school administration. The teacher, administrator, student, and parent will meet to implement a plan of action for completing the work and educating the student and parent as required and discuss the consequences and next steps. All subsequent incidents: The teacher will report the student to school administration. The teacher, administrator, student, and parent will meet to educate the student and parent as required. The student will not receive a grade for that assignment and the teacher will record the test as an incomplete. This procedure may impact the student’s final mark in the course. 12 If a grade 11 or 12 student plagiarizes a summative task: First incident: The teacher will report the student to school administration. The student will meet with a committee of the teacher, an administrator, and an additional educator to implement a plan of action for the student. The administrator will communicate with the parent that a plagiarism has occurred and discuss the consequences and next steps. All subsequent incidents: The teacher will report the student to school administration. The teacher, administrator, student, and parent will meet to educate the student and parent as required. The student will not receive a grade for that assignment and the teacher will record the test as an incomplete. This procedure may impact the student’s final mark in the course. CHEATING ON TESTS, EXAMS AND ASSIGNMENTS If a student cheats on a test by passing a paper to another student and/or brings in notes to copy from: First incident: The teacher will immediately confiscate the test. The teacher will contact administration who will notify the parent and document the incident. The student will receive a warning and rewrite a different version of the test at the teacher’s convenience. Second incident and all subsequent incidents that school year: The student will be referred to school administration. The parent will be contacted and the incident will be documented. The test will not be graded and the teacher will record the test as an incomplete. This procedure may impact the student’s final mark in the course. *All cases of cheating on exams will be referred to the school administration to determine the appropriate consequence and course of action. Similarly, if a student copies the assignment of another student: First incident: The teacher will contact administration who will notify the parent and document the incident. The student will receive a warning and rewrite a different version of the assignment at the teacher’s convenience under supervision. Second incident and all subsequent incidents that school year: Should a second incident of copying occur in any class during the same school year, the student will be referred to school administration. The parent will be contacted and the incident will be documented. The assignment will not be graded and the teacher will record it as an incomplete. This procedure may impact the student’s final mark in the course. 13 LOCKS AND LOCKERS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. A locker will be assigned to each student. Students may only occupy the locker assigned to him/her. No student may share a locker with another student. All backpacks, large purses and bookbags must be left in the locker. Students are not permitted to bring backpacks, bookbags or large purses to class. Students are encouraged not to leave money or valuables in their lockers or change rooms. It is strongly recommended that Physical Education students bring a combination lock for a gym locker. The school is not responsible for items lost or stolen. Students are cautioned not to share their combination with others and should ensure their lock is secure before leaving their lockers. Students will be held financially accountable for ensuring their lockers remain in good condition throughout the year and should inform the office of any damage that occurs. Students who damage or vandalize lockers will receive consequences under the Ontario Schools Code of Conduct. Lockers are the property of St. Francis Xavier CHS and the student is a tenant only. Students must use St. Francis Xavier’s locks. There will be a $10.00 charge. This will be refunded when they leave the school. Locks remain the property of the school. The school reserves the right to search individual lockers, if deemed necessary. TEXTBOOKS Students are responsible for school textbooks assigned to them for use during the year. Textbooks are to be returned to the subject teacher. Damaged or lost textbooks may result in the student paying the replacement fee for a new textbook. Students who do not return their books will not be issued their final report card and will not be given textbooks for the next semester until books are returned or payment for the lost or damaged texts has been received. LIBRARY RULES Food, drink, cell phones and school bags are not permitted in the Library. Books are signed out at the front desk, with a two book maximum. Magazines can also be signed out for one week, with a two magazine maximum. The return date is stamped in the back of the book. Late charges are 10 cents per item, per school day. If a book is lost the student is responsible for the replacement cost of the book plus a $2.00 processing fee. Failure to return items or pay fines will result in a letter home and withholding of report cards. There is a charge of 10 cents per page for photocopying and/or printing from the computer and/or internet. 14 LEAVING SCHOOL GROUNDS Students who are under 18 are not permitted to leave the school premises without parental permission. If a student who is under 18 must leave, a parent or guardian must sign them out at Student Services. Students 18 years and older are required to sign. Students who fail to comply with this procedure will be dealt with as follows: 1st offence – late detention 2nd offence – late detention; subsequent offences will result in a suspension. VISITORS Students are not permitted to bring guests or visitors to school during regular school hours including lunchtime. All visitors approved by administration, including parents, must sign in and obtain a visitor pass from Student Services. FIRE ALARMS As part of our school safety procedures, the school will have regular fire drills. Tampering with fire alarms, fire extinguishers and security systems is a serious offence. Anyone caught doing so will be reported to the police, the Fire Marshall of Ontario and will be suspended from school for a minimum of one day. LOCKDOWN In extraordinary circumstances it may be necessary to place the school into a security lockdown. Upon hearing “Emergency – Code Red” staff will initiate the following procedure: 1. All students must be gathered into the nearest classroom or office, avoiding washrooms if possible. 2. Classroom doors must be kept locked. 3. Students are to move out of sightlines of windows in the doors. 4. Windows in doors are to be covered, if possible. 5. Cell phones are not to be used by staff or students (excessive cell phone use in other violent incidents has shut down access to vital communication lines). 6. All students and staff are to remain quiet and in safe locations until advised by administration of all-clear. 7. If you are already outside the building, do not enter and move as far away from the building as possible. SCHOOL EVACUATION In the event the school needs to be evacuated the students will be bussed to the Bourget Community Centre. Our back up site is St. Mathieu Church in Hammond. The media will be contacted about the reason for the evacuation. Parents will need to monitor the radio stations for information. Parents may pick up their children at these locations. 15 BUSING Riding on a school bus is a privilege, not a right. Improper conduct may result in withdrawal of this privilege. School buses under contract with the Board are considered to be an extension of the school system. Consequently, the disciplinary standards set by the school and the Board will apply to all vehicle passengers. Students whose behaviour endangers the safety or interferes with the comfort of others may have their riding privileges revoked. Students are responsible to the school principal for their behaviour on the school bus. The bus driver acts on behalf of the principal. Students will obey instructions from the driver. Compensation for damage or destruction of Board property by a student is the responsibility of the student and parent. This also applies to school buses. Please refer to the Board’s bus pamphlet distributed to each student in September for further information. Board policy stipulates that students are to be picked up and dropped off at their designated stops. Students are not permitted to be dropped off at a different stop or to ride another student’s bus. BUS CANCELLATIONS (INCLEMENT WEATHER) We have three types of recommendations that may be made when weather conditions/forecasts are fog, freezing rain, snow, blowing snow and/or continuous cold. Recommendations can include the following: a) buses cancelled for one zone; b) buses cancelled for more than one zone; c) or buses cancelled for the entire area. Announcements regarding the cancellation of school bus and special vehicle transportation will be broadcasted starting at 6:15 a.m. on your local radio station. Bus cancellations for the day can also be accessed after 6:15 a.m. via the Board’s website, www.cdsbeo.on.ca or STEO’s website, www.steo.ca. If transportation is cancelled in the morning, afternoon transportation will not operate. Please do not call the bus operators. Winter weather conditions can change rapidly and unpredictably. If roads become impassable during the school day or are judged to be risky, rather than closing schools early, students will be kept at school until either their parents come to pick them up or it becomes safe to resume school bus transportation once again. Although school will remain open on these occasions there will not be transportation at the end of the school day for those students who do attend. Students will be expected to serve their detentions and suspensions and submit their assignments upon their return to school after a snow day. LATE BUSES Students must sign up for late buses prior to 1:30 p.m. Students must indicate the stop to be dropped off at, the reason they are staying and who the supervisor will be. No student will be permitted to stay unless they have signed up for the bus and have indicated the reason and supervisor. Failure to sign up for late buses may result in losing this privilege. 16 STUDENT PARKING POLICY Student parking on St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School property is a privilege, not a right. Students who refuse to cooperate with school officials will lose their privilege to bring a vehicle on school grounds. Students are expected to adhere to all driving and vehicle related expectations mentioned above. In addition, the following expectations will be endorsed: 1. All student vehicles must be registered at the main office. 2. For safety reasons, students are expected to adhere to the 15 km per hour speed limit while on school property. 3. Students may not sit in vehicles during the school day. 4. Students who are habitually late may lose the privilege of bringing their vehicle onto school property. Violations of parking regulations can lead to the following consequences: 1st offence – loss of privilege to bring vehicle to school for one week 2nd offence – loss of privilege to bring vehicle to school for one month 3rd offence – removal of privilege for the remainder of the school year If a student brings a vehicle to school while their privilege to do so is suspended, their parents will be contacted and the vehicle will be towed at the owner’s expense. PERSONAL PROPERTY St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School is not responsible for the personal property of students, including money. It is recommended that students do not bring unnecessary valuables or large amounts of money to school. Students should not leave personal property unattended. It is recommended that all students keep possessions secured in their assigned lockers. CELLULAR PHONES Cellular phones and pagers are not to be brought to class. They are to be used for emergency purposes only. These items are to be left in student lockers. Students can access the pay phone in the main office. IPODs/MP3s Personal, portable sound systems (i.e. iPods, MP3 players, etc.) are permitted in class at the discretion of the classroom teacher. SKATEBOARDS/ROLLERBLADES Skateboards and rollerblades are not allowed at school. 17 MEDICAL INFORMATION Health services 1. Students may request a consultation with the public health nurse, as he/she is not available on a regular basis. 2. In case of medical emergency, parents will be notified immediately. 3. If conditions so warrant, students will be transported by ambulance to the hospital. Medication policy All prescribed or non-prescribed medication must be kept in the MEP classroom (C03). Parents must complete a medical authorization form prior to school personnel administering any medication. The school will continue to provide first aid treatment such as bandages and antiseptic when necessary. No staff member is permitted to administer any medication, including over-the-counter drugs, to any student without a signed Administration of Medication form on file in the school office. Medical form for school trips outside the Ottawa area If a student is on medication and/or has a medical condition, the parent/guardian is required to obtain a doctor’s note indicating that the student is well enough physically to participate in the activity, and that the field trip will not interfere with the medication or the condition. SCHOOL UNIFORM POLICY The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario has implemented the school uniform policy that all Catholic high schools must be a school uniform environment. Students who enrol at St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School do so with a complete awareness of the uniform requirements. Therefore, by choosing St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School, students and parents agree to abide by the established school uniform policy. The uniform is a means of creating a distinct school identity. Students who do not respect the policy are in effect undermining that goal. All students attending St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School must be in full uniform while on school property and while representing St. Francis in the community at large. We expect our school uniform to be worn proudly and neatly. As well, we ask parents/guardians to assist and support our school in upholding this standard. Students will not be admitted to class if they are not in proper uniform. Students will be sent to the main office and their parents will be contacted. If a student is not admitted to class he/she will be responsible for all work missed. 1. Non-uniform sweaters are not allowed. 2. Only navy blue, white or grey solid coloured t-shirts are allowed to be worn under uniform items and must not be visible below the bottom hem. Graphics, pictures and writing on t-shirts are not allowed. 18 3. Hooded t-shirts are not allowed. 4. The uniform must be worn appropriately; no sagging or over-sizing is allowed. Pant bottoms may not be split or widened. Shorts and skirts may not be rolled up or shortened. 5. Only black, navy blue, white or beige solid coloured tights are allowed. Lace or fishnet tights and/or leggings are not allowed. 6. Dress shirts must be buttoned. 7. No shirts should be tied in the back. 8. Undergarments should not be exposed and pant length should not be dragging. 9. Clothing that is torn or ripped is not allowed. 10. Pants must be worn over boots. 11. Accessories such as jewellery, backpacks and make up must not display vulgar, violent or sexually suggestive language or images. Sweat bands and spiked or studded bracelets are not allowed. For safety concerns, no chains may be attached to the uniform pants. Long neck chains are not permitted for the same reason. Any unauthorized alteration of the school uniform is unacceptable. 12. Sunglasses are not to be worn indoors at any time. 13. Students taking physical education classes must wear the school gym uniform, which includes a t-shirt and shorts. 14. Coats are to be worn outside only. All coats must be left in lockers. 15. Students must arrive at school and depart from school in the school uniform. 16. Student will wear the school uniform on excursions. Exceptions may be made depending on the nature of the excursion. 17. Students must wear their uniform during exam periods. DRESS CODE FOR NON-UNIFORM DAYS On the occasional non-uniform days students are expected to dress in a neat, clean presentable manner. No chains or beads are allowed. Sunglasses are not to be worn indoors at any time. In general, students will respect a code of decency appropriate for a Catholic school. Clothing with distasteful messages and/or pictures must not be worn to school. Clothing promoting alcohol/beer companies or illicit substances is not considered appropriate for school. No spaghetti straps, halter tops, tank tops or muscle shirts will be allowed. During warm weather, walking shorts and skirts (fingertip length) will be permitted. No short shorts. For safety reasons flip-flips are not encouraged and must not be worn in science labs, tech shops or physical education classes. 19 ATHLETIC FEES In order to sustain our extracurricular programs in today’s economic setting, it is necessary to charge a flat athletic fee of $40.00 per student, or $60.00 per family. To further offset costs (e.g. team uniforms, equipment, etc.) each student athlete is expected to participate in the annual chocolate fundraiser. All games outside of league play will cost an additional fee (this includes transportation costs, ref fees, etc.) Fee to be determined by the coach. Please note athletes chosen for grade 9 – 12 school teams will be chosen to participate based on their performance in the classroom and school or school events. Coaches will verbally communicate this information to their players prior to the season. WITHDRAWAL Parents wishing to withdraw a student from St. Francis Xavier (or students 18 and over) must complete a withdrawal form in the student services office. Lockers must be cleaned out and all locks and books returned. STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE Students must pay their student activity fee and have their student card in order to participate in any activities. SCHOOL ACTIVITIES Athletics Students are encouraged to participate in the variety of extracurricular activities which are available at St. Francis Xavier. Those students who have an even greater interest in athletics may try out for the school teams which compete against other schools in the area. Interschool teams exist for basketball, soccer, volleyball, badminton, ice hockey and track and field. Extracurricular eligibility Students are encouraged to get involved in a wide range of group and individual activities offered at St. Francis Xavier. Not only will they have fun, but will experience the opportunity to develop personal skills and leadership qualities that will last their whole life. In order to maintain eligibility for extracurricular activities a student must: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Attend all classes in accordance with the school attendance policy. Strive to achieve credit in all subjects. Adhere to the school code of behaviour and responsibilities. Be a full-time student (three courses in the semester in which a sport is played). Have paid his/her student activity fee which includes the student card. If the above eligibility requirements are not met, extracurricular activities may be suspended or cancelled until the requirements are met. 20 Earn your “X” for ST FX (for students in grades 9 – 12) Students get their “X’ if they reach a total of 40 points by the end of their grade 12 year. 1 extracurricular sport = 3 points 1 elective phys ed course = 2 points Transfer Policy Students in grades 10 – 12 transferring to St. Francis Xavier and wishing to play on a school team are advised to check with the guidance and athletic departments about their eligibility. Music There is an extensive music program at St. Francis Xavier for all levels of students from grade 7 – 12. The bands perform for special events, masses and at concerts both at our school as well as outside of the school. School Dances Dances for grade 7 and 8 students are scheduled during the school day as approved by the administration. These dances are supervised by teachers. For students in grades 9 – 12, in order to ensure safety and enjoyment for all, dances are scheduled using the following guidelines: 1. Dances start at 7:00 p.m. The doors to the dance close at 8:30 p.m. 2. A student who leaves the school during the dance cannot re-enter and must leave the school property. 3. Any St. Francis Xavier students who sign in a guest accept responsibility for his/her guest. The guest must have photo identification. 4. A student who is under suspension from school cannot attend dances. 5. No lockers will be available to students during the dance. A coatroom will be provided. Students who do not adhere to the above may forfeit their dance privileges for the remainder of the year. STUDENT COUNCIL St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Student Council plans and organizes many school events including fundraisers, spirit, awareness days and charity and community-building events. In addition to committee meetings for student council events, the assembly meets regularly to discuss various issues and to vote on important decisions. St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School Student Council serves as a liaison between students and administration. Our student council gives students the opportunity to experience personal growth, develop leadership, problem solving and decision making skills. We encourage students of all grades to take an active part in the life of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic High School community. 21 LATE, UNACCEPTABLE AND MISSING ASSIGNMENTS Viewing late and missing work as a teachable opportunity holds far more positive elements for the student-teacher partnership than swift mark reduction. If assignments are necessary for accurate assessment of student achievement, not submitting them should not be an option. Putting the responsibility for work completion on the student ensures that the work will be done since they must “acknowledge” the work as missing. 1. All assignments are due on the due date. 2. When an assignment is not submitted on the due date: a) The teacher will conference with the student b) Parents will be notified c) The student will be referred to the student success/study hall room at lunch 3. Students attending extracurricular events, including sporting events, music trips, field trips, etc., are still required to hand in assignments by the due date. NOTICE OF COLLECTION OF PERSONAL INFORMATION Over the course of the school year as part of its mandate to educate its students, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario under the authority of the Education Act, (R.S.O. 1990 c.E.2) ss. 58.5, 265 and 266 as amended, will collect personal information about each student. The information collected may be written, oral or visual. This personal information will be used to register and place the student in a school or for a consistent purpose such as the allocation of staff and resources and to give information to employees to carry out their job duties. In addition, the information may be used to deal with matters of health and safety or discipline and that may be required to be disclosed in compelling circumstances or for law enforcement matters or in accordance with any other Act. The information will be used in accordance with the Education Act, the regulations, and guidelines issued by the Minister of Education governing the establishment, maintenance, use, retention, transfer and disposal of pupil records. PHOTOGRAPHING &/OR VIDEOTAPING OF STUDENTS Many positive things take place in our school and we would like to share this good news with the community. One of the ways to share this information is to invite media to the school. There are a number of times during the school year when students can be photographed, interviewed or videotaped in regard to special events, initiatives or sports events. Another way we can share our good news is by displaying student pictures and school work in school or school board publications, on our school website or on the board’s website. If you do not consent to your child being photographed or videotaped, and his or her name, image and/or school worked used in media coverage of school related events, in school or board publications, or on the school or board website, please contact the school. 22
