Subject: Recommendation for Stuart Lee Butler to receive the Spirit of 1812 Award issued by
the U. S. Daughters of 1812 Society
I very highly recommend him for this award. He is undoubtedly the most qualified person in
Virginia to receive it. There is little question that he has greater knowledge about the war in Vir
ginia than any other person and he has forged ahead in this bicentennial period in providing this
information to the public.
Some of the things he has accomplished are:
As a member of the Advisory Council to Virginia's Bicentennial Commission he has provid
ed the wording and references for the majority of the Commission's twenty five historical
road signs that are being erected during the bicentennial. These were readily accepted by
V-DOT as he is the authority on all the encounters that took place in Virginia during the
War
He was the guest speaker at the dedication of a Virginia Historical Road sign for General Joel
Leftwich on March 14, 2011. He was the one that formulated the wording for the sign.
He publishes a revised guide to Virginia militia units during the war period in August 2011.
This guide is absolutely essential to any person that is trying to accurately determine if
their ancestor is a militia veteran of the War in Virginia.
He has had two separate articles published in 2012 in the Richmond Times newspaper about
the war in Virginia.
He was guest speaker at the James Monroe Birthplace Ceremony in Westrnoreland County in
April 2012 where he spoke about President James Monroe's involvement in the War. He
was again the guest speaker at the James Monroe Birthday ceremony conducted at the
Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond where he spoke again about President Monroe's in
volvement in the War.
He has presented several presentations to county historical societies during years 2011 and
2012. The last was conducted at Barboursville in Orange County on July 29, 2012 where
he talked about War of 1812 Virginia Governor, James Barbour.
He was the guest speaker at the War of 1812 Society's annual conference in Fredericksburg
on June 16,2012 where he talked about the Declaration of War document.
He has given several presentations as guest speaker at the Virginia State Society of the U.S.
Daughters of 1812 chapter meetings
He has been compiling the two volume publication Defending the Old Dominion: Virginia
and its Militia in the War of 1812. I have been privy to a draft of this publication and it is
absolutely outstanding. This should be published in the very near future.
In summary then, I highly recommend him for the award.
