According to a 20 year study of
over 1,500 people ages 40 to 60,
less active people appeared to
have smaller brains in late life.
Results were tabulated after a
treadmill test, a second treadmill
test and then an MRI of the brain.
Results revealed those who were
less physically fit during both tests
had lower brain volume than those
who maintained high physical
fitness levels during the course of
the 20 year study.
Researcher Dr. Nicole Spartano
believes her study and other
studies support the fact exercise
training programs improve fitness
and increase blood flow and
oxygen to the brain. Over the
course of a lifetime exercise may, and often does, have a positive impact on brain aging,
memory, language and thinking in older age.

Spotlight On: Jerry McGee
Sister Centers League bowlers continue to be the most interesting
and fun loving friends of any business on the East Coast of Florida.
Our Spotlight Today shines on one Jerry McGee. Jerry bowls on 2
leagues. First, Monday with the Savanna Club at 1 PM; Wednesday
with Riverfront Tigers at 1 PM and comes back to the center for
Saturday evening Tournament Bowling in the 9 Pin No Tap.
Jerry has a 20
year history with
Saint Lucie
Lanes and other bowling centers up and down
Florida’s coast including Sebastian, Vero and Ft.
Pierce. Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jerry
became a permanent Florida resident over 53
years ago. He lives at the Savanna Club with his
wife, Paula. As a professional maintenance and
repairs engineer, Jerry has lots of experience in
keeping local condominiums in tip top shape.
Newly retired (only 6 years ago) Jerry and Paula
enjoy their neighbors, bowling, their children and
three grandchildren.
During the course of his work experience Jerry
developed an interest in welding. His welding
expertise blossomed into an art form using
welding techniques in metal sculpture along with a real love for wood working. Jerry donated one of
Jerry's latest sculptures to Saint Lucie Lanes. We are proud to have this work of art and display it
proudly at the front desk at Saint Lucie Lanes. Thank you Jerry for this generous and heartfelt gift !
Thank you Jerry for your friendship. You are appreciated by many!
A Message From Our Miss Lucille
When you have been in one place for so many years you are
bound to make friends and meet unforgettable people. But not
as many as I have met over the last 23 years at Saint Lucie
Lanes. There are hundreds of friends enriching my life every
week. I know their names and life stories as they know mine.
We have been through marriages, births, illness and death
together. Rewarding is such an inadequate word to describe
my experience here at Saint Lucie Lanes.
The moment I first stepped through the doors I met so many
warm and wonderful people. They all made me feel so
welcome. Of course, one of the first things they did was make
"fun" of my accent (I am proud to be a born and raised New
Yorker), and I would say “NO ! YOU have the accent.” We
would have fun and laugh. I was so homesick for my family still
in New York it made me sad. But these folks at the bowling
center easily helped me get through what could have been a
very rough time in my life. Needless to say, they became my new family. When the previous owner
forbid me wearing my big earrings, employees stood up, rallied around me and protested. He quickly
cancelled his mandate. My heart burst!! When my cancer returned in 1993 and I had to take off work
due to treatments, so many of the people in the leagues I spent time with each day took up
collections for me to ease my financial burden. And when I was in the hospital with TTP again, they
returned with support for me. Some came to see me almost every day. Only love generates this
generosity. When I get sick or look "off" or tired, there are always questions and concerns. Many
ask how my mother is because they know she is 98 years old!
Having such a large new family does come with loss and sadness. Over the years I have lost many.
I try to remember them each day. But I also make new "family" friends on a daily basis. So, I have a
healthy blend of happiness and sadness.
Many have left the Lanes for other reasons. I am still in touch with some of them. I have forever been
enriched knowing each and every person. I cannot stress this enough. I hope each and every person
has the same incredible experiences and as many arms wrapped around them as I have had, and still
have, at Saint Lucie Lanes. I am truly blessed!!
Along with a new family came a new home; Saint Lucie Lanes!! This building has become a warm
hearth and welcome abode. There have been many changes the same way any home goes through
changes as years pass. I have seen wood lanes changed to synthetic; three computer systems; walls
moved and removed; colors changed; carpets removed and replaced; disco lights added; bumpers
changed from blow ups to stationary on all 48 lanes; masking units come and go; the food court
renovated; and other subtle changes along the way. Yet through it all, the welcoming feeling and
happiness within its walls has NEVER changed. When the machines turn on, customers smile and it’s
always as if they are hearing this noise for the first time ! !
People's attachment run very deep to this extraordinary home away from home and I am no different
than anyone else. My love for Saint Lucie Lanes is real and normal. This will never change.

Summer Time Fun For Saint Lucie Youth
The youth program at Saint Lucie Lanes is active and fun all 4 seasons of the year; winter,
summer, spring and fall! There is no down time for our junior bowlers - especially in the
summer when school is out and parents suffer the "I am bored" song. Starting Saturday, June
18th at 10 AM we offer the Stars of Tomorrow for youth bowlers who want to improve their
game and for those just starting this great sport. We have USBC Certified coaches on hand
to assist during this 3 game Saturday league. This league is good for all interested because
you can bowl as much and as often as you care to bowl. It is perfect for children and parents
who have a busy summer schedules. This is a "no worry" league; a "no pressure" league;
and a "it’s lots of fun" league.
Saint Lucie Lanes runs an Adult/Child Scholarship Tuesday nights starting June 14th @
5:50 pm. Come earlier and enjoy a good, healthy, reasonably priced dinner at our food court.
Make this a family night – make time to share and have fun with your children while banking
scholarship money at the same time!
If you have a child just starting out in the sport, we have a Learn To Bowl league beginning
Saturday May 7th @1 pm. Besides learning the sport of bowling; improving hand/eye
coordination; learning the meaning of teamwork and the universal rules of good
sportsmanship; every child gets their own bowling ball to take home.
Our Summer Bowling Camps are week sessions, 2 hours every
day 10 AM to noon. Whether beginning, intermediate or
advanced, these camps are fun in a cool, clean, air-conditioned
space. Bowling Camps start Monday June 27th through Friday,
July 1st, then starting again Monday, July 18th through Friday,
July 22nd. It’s surprising how quickly the weeks pass !
Now, an announcement. Sad news and good news. For those
of you who aren't already familiar with this Ball Of Fire, let us
introduce you to our employee, Kerrie Daugherty. Starting June
1st Kerrie takes the helm of the junior program at Saint Lucie
Lanes. Our long time Junior Coordinator, Terry Moore, steps
down as the leader of the junior program to reduce her work load
and take some well earned time for herself. She isn't gone yet but we already miss her. There is a bright side to this news Terry won't leave us all together! The Terry we all love and know
will be at Saint Lucie Lanes volunteering and coaching because,
like Kerri, bowling and children are Terry’s passion. This is a win win situation for all our junior
bowlers and their families. So, let's all welcome Kerrie Daugherty. WELCOME KERRIE! We
are excited to see what Kerrie will do these upcoming months because, like Terry Moore, the
most important thing she brings to her job is the love of children and this is what matters
most! And Terry Moore, you remember this, “you ain’t goin’ nowhere ! “

Fundraising News At The Sister Centers
Council On Aging Takes A Big Bite
Mary Craig and Laurie Hoy tirelessly cater to the needs
of the aging on the Treasure Coast. They are life long
volunteers for the Council on Aging of Saint Lucie and
the hosts at the 6th Annual "Strike Out Hunger" event
at Saint Lucie Lanes, Mary, Laurie and their band of
volunteers raised over $10,000 for Meals On Wheels.
Over 2 dozen local businesses sponsored bowling lanes
for employees, clients, friends and families. The result
was the "perfect storm" of fun, games, food while sharing
the joy that comes from doing good deeds.
The partnership of Council on Aging and Saint Lucie Lanes works !
"Our 6th Annual “Strike out Hunger” Bowl for Meals event was a great success and certainly a
fun day for everyone who joined us,” stated Mary Craig, Event Coordinator. “We certainly
appreciate and understand what a committed TEAM can accomplish and it is just great to
know that the Council on Aging as well all of you at St. Lucie Lanes are part of that team!"
Relay For Life Hits It's Mark
Considering it was their first time out of the box, Relay
for Life of Saint Lucie County reveled in their
success Sunday, February 21st at its First Annual
“Bowl For the Cure” held at Saint Lucie Lanes.
These energetic volunteers support the continuous
efforts of doctors and scientists battling the ravages of
cancer. Relay for Life is a team of over 3.5 million
across 5,000 communities worldwide.
“Everyone had a great time. We are so pleased
with our first bowling event because bowling is the
perfect match for our message of healthy athletic
activities to support the cause.” said Jenn Brock, Event Coordinator. "Plus the fact we
met new survivors and saw them having fun bowling with their families. We are so
thrilled to support them and those they love."
Few places in South Florida have the combination of scope, size and staff to put it all together
as your community center for family and fun. We believe in teamwork and this is why we will
win the battle!
