733: Pre Prep Maths – Inside and Out
Date: Tuesday 2 June 2015
Venue: The Hawthorns, Pendell Court, Bletchingley, Surrey RH1 4QJ
Cost: Online £175 (non IAPS members – additional £100)
The new National Curriculum for mathematics has been generally well received. It states that a good
mathematics education will give pupils “an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics and a sense of
enjoyment and curiosity about the subject”. So how do we give children a good maths education? Motivating,
inspiring and creating confidence in the subject is down to individual teachers.
This course will look at the features of effective teaching and learning in maths and how we can engage and
excite children with creative ways of approaching mathematical concepts and ideas both inside and outside the
classroom. It will also look at the expectations for each year group and how we develop children’s mathematical
‘fluency’.
Audience: Teachers in EYFS and Pre Prep, Maths Co-ordinators
Objectives: The main objectives of the course are to provide practical experience and teaching strategies for
use inside and outside the classroom and to examine the impact of the expectations of the new maths
curriculum on teaching and learning.
Course Director: Kath Henry, IAPS Pre Prep Subject Adviser
Speakers: Kath Henry, Elaine Forsyth, Head of Pre Prep, The Hawthorns
