This week in Mathematics, students are continuing to practice their doubles facts with sums to 20. During math students learned about the times of day which included morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Students also learned about addition facts by adding one to the number. Things to Keep Practicing at Home: Family Reading Night Snack donation for 1st grade: pretzels Teacher contact information and grading scale are located on the back side of the newsletter for additional information. Please remember to sign your child’s report card envelope and send it back on side one of your child’s blue folder as soon as possible. Please practice with your child on tying shoes. With wet weather on the way, students need to be able to tie P.E. shoes on their own. Also, please do not double knot shoes because it makes it difficult to untie . Thank you! Please remember to check your child’s homework every night. Please help read directions on worksheets and review high frequency words. 1. Doubles facts. 2. Writing numbers to 50. 3. Recognizing numbers to 50. 4. Writing three different number sentences to get the same answer. In Science, students are continuing to work with pumpkins. Students reviewed the life cycle of a pumpkin and learned more about the parts of a pumpkin. Students now know pumpkins inside and out! This week, students also learned about how tall and wide our classroom pumpkin was and whether or not pumpkins sink or float. Tonight ask your child whether pumpkins float or sink and why? Wednesday, October 31st Report Cards Went Out November 1st & 2nd Vision & Hearing Screening November 7th and 8th (Mrs. Curl – Nov. 5, 6, & 8) Parent Teacher Conferences…schedule your conference today! November 15th Family Reading Night from 5:30-7:00pm This week the first graders took a break from the usual readers and read a fun Halloween story titled Maria’s Halloween. We worked on using our own words to retell what happened at the beginning, middle, and end as well as telling what the main idea of a story is. Another skill we are working on is using context clues (other words in a sentence or an accompanying picture) to figure out words we don’t know. Also, the fun finger play “Five Little Pumpkins” helped the first graders work on sequencing. It’s always refreshing to have some holiday fun while we learn! The first graders are becoming more independent during Reading Workshop. Each day they have time to complete a task on their own. Please check your child’s homework folder nightly in case he/she needs more time to complete the assignment. In the story Maria’s Halloween, three kids go trickor-treating and visit neighbors who give them a small treat. Each neighbor’s door had a Halloween decoration. The first graders learned that when we want to show that something belongs to someone, we use an apostrophe followed by an ‘s’. We have been learning so many new ideas in phonics class that this week we worked on a review worksheet that required the first graders to code words that used all the various skills! It also allowed them to work on syllables (claps) and being a detective to find mistakes in a sentence. small want two into very saw no good ride out put away We would like to thank all the parents who volunteered and donated supplies for the Halloween party. You all made it a great success. Thank you for your time and support!
