THE GUNSTON SCHOOL
Summer Reading 2014
Reading broadens your background and strengthens verbal skills. It
is also a way to discover new ideas and philosophies. We advise you
to read many books but require at least four books this summer:
one book is selected for the entire school, one for each grade level,
and two are your own choice. We have listed our recommendations
on the following pages.
1. Community-Wide Read
The Isle of Youth, by Laura van den Berg,
our special guest for the 2014 In Celebration of Books
2. English Class Reading
English as a World Language (EWL) & English Literature:
Night by Elie Weisel
English 9: The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D. Salinger
English 10: 1984, by George Orwell
English 11: Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, by
Frederick Douglass
English 12: They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky: The Story of
Three Lost Boys from Sudan by Benjamin Ajak, Benson
Deng, Alephonsion Deng, with Judy A. Bernstein
3 & 4. Choice from “Summer Reading List
In addition, you must choose two books to read from the
“Summer Reading List” in this booklet. You must complete a
summer reading response journal for these two books. Your
journals should be handed in to your English teacher no later than
Friday, September 5th.
Please refrain from using outside and/or online sources. Your English teacher will give you more specific assignments on your required
grade-level reading and the community read once you return to
school.
While reading your books, record your observations, critical judgments, opinions, questions, and feelings. For the two books you chose
to read on your own, we ask that you write a journal response (Times
Roman, 12 point, double spaced) of at least 500 words for each book.
Please date each entry, and you may use first person (“I”) in your
responses.
Directions for Summer Reading Response Journals:
Consider writing about different components of the work, including:
• Personal reaction to characters, events, themes, recurring imagery
and/or symbolism
• Pose questions and attempt to respond to them
• Identify significant quotes and comment upon them
• Imagine you are one of the characters and then write from his or
her perspective
You should avoid plot summary in your responses. Summer reading
journals will be assessed in relation to the depth of engagement as
well as clarity of writing.
