Course: 7th Grade Math DETAIL LESSON PLAN Monday, November 28 / Tuesday, November 29 Student Objective (Obj. 1g) TSW… find unit rates and unit costs using proportional reasoning. Lesson 5-2 Unit Rates Textbook Pages: 232-235 Homework Unit Rate WS (6 problems) Last Night’s Homework Complete Ratio/Proportion classwork for homework. Bellwork Semester Exam Study Guide, Problem #’s: __________ - __________ Prior Knowledge During our last class we learned that a ratio is the comparison of two quantities by division. Anticipatory Set Today… we’ll learn about some special types of ratios… called unit rates and unit costs! Pass out Student Notes. Teach via PowerPoint today. Display Unit Rates… We use them without even realizing we are using them! Begin PowerPoint. Slide two will be a slide with a bunch of 1’s on it. Ask the students to study the slide for a moment and see if they can figure out what the word “unit” means. Play the song “One is the Loneliest Number” to reinforce that the word unit means one of something! Explain how to determine unit rate. Another type of ratio is called a unit cost. When you see unit cost, you need to think…MONEY! Play “Money, Money…Money” song to reinforce that unit cost means money! When setting up a ratio involving money, the money always goes on top! Why learn this? Well, as seen in our introduction, ratios can be used to compare any two quantities! Teacher Input Review bellwork. Use PowerPoint to introduce and teach today’s lesson on unit rates and unit costs. Pass out student notes. Define unit rate. Explain and demonstrate how to set up a unit rate. Have students work one you-try problem. (independently) Define unit cost. Explain and demonstrate how to set up a unit cost. Have students work two you-try problems. (independently) Classwork: PH 9 (think, pair, share) Extra Practice: GL 8-2, PH-15 puzzle Homework: Textbook Page 234. Problems 6, 7, 8, 15, 16, 17 Assessment Question for understanding. Monitor students as they work on their classwork. Take up PH 9 as a participation grade. Closure Beach Ball Math Name the ratio for: 100 points in 9 games 500 miles in 10 hours 18 people in 6 cars 14 pounds in 7 week $900 for 5 days $32.00 for 10 CD’s $14.00 for 7 minutes $4.25 for 3 pounds Student Notes 5-2 Unit Rates / Unit Costs Textbook 232 - 235 Unit Rate… It is the rate for “1” unit of something! Example: If you drive 200 miles in 5 hours, how far did you drive in 1 hour? STEP 1 Write the problem as a ratio in fraction form. 200 miles 5 hours STEP 2 Divide to get your answer! 40 miles in 1 hour Unit Cost (also known as unit price)… It is the amount it costs for “1” unit of something! Example: Mimi went to the market and bought 7 apples for $3.15. How much did each apple cost? STEP 1 Write the problem as a ratio in fraction form as follows: STEP 2 Divide to get your answer! Round to the nearest cent if necessary. $3.15 7 .45 cents Name: ___________ Classwork Period: __________ Unit Rates and Proportional Reasoning Write the unit rate for each situation. Show your raito! 1) travel 250 mi in 5 h _______________________ 3) read 80 pages in 2 h _______________________ 5) manufacture 2,488 parts in 8 h _______________________ 2) earn $75.20 in 8 h _______________________ 4) type 8,580 words in 165 minutes _______________________ 6) 50 copies of a book on 2 shelves _______________________ Find each unit price. Show your ratio. Circle the better buy! 7) paper: 100 sheets for $.99 500 sheets for $4.29 8) peanuts: 1 lb for $1.29 12 lb for $11.40 ______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ 9) crackers: 15 oz for $1.79 12 oz for $1.30 10) apples: 3 lb for $1.89 5 lb for $2.49 _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ 11) mechanical pencils: 4 for $1.25 25 for $5.69 12) bagels: 4 for $.89 6 for 1.39 _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ _______________________ Grading Scale ______ 50 pts Worked quietly, stayed on task, & followed rules for Think, Pair, Share. _______ 50 pts Work shown as taught in class. Classwork Answer Key Unit Rates and Proportional Reasoning Write the unit rate for each situation. 1) travel 250 mi in 5 h 50 miles in 1 hour _______________________ 3) read 80 pages in 2 h 40 pages in 1 hour _______________________ 5) manufacture 2,488 parts in 8 h 311 parts in 1 hour _______________________ 2) earn $75.20 in 8 h $9.40 in 1 hour _______________________ 4) type 8,580 words in 165 minutes 52 words in 1 minute _______________________ 6) 50 copies of a book on 2 shelves 25 copies on 1 shelf _______________________ Find each unit price. Then circle the better buy! 7) paper: 100 sheets for $.99 500 sheets for $4.29 8) peanuts: 1 lb for $1.29 12 lb for $11.40 $ .0099 per sheet _______________________ $ 1.29 per pound _______________________ $ .00858 per sheet _______________________ $ .95 per pound _______________________ 9) crackers: 15 oz for $1.79 12 oz for $1.30 10) apples: 3 lb for $1.89 5 lb for $2.49 $ .12 per oz _______________________ $ .63 per pound _______________________ $ .11 per oz _______________________ $ .50 per pound _______________________ 11) mechanical pencils: 4 for $1.25 25 for $5.69 12) bagels: 4 for $.89 6 for 1.39 $ .31 per pencil _______________________ $ .22 per bagel _______________________ $ .23 per pencil _______________________ $ .23 per bagel _______________________ Name: Date: Period: _____________________ _____________________ ________ Unit Rates Find the unit rate for each situation. Please show where you set up your ratio in fractional form. Make sure you round to the nearest hundredth if necessary. 1) Traveling 1,200 miles in 4 hours = ___________ miles per hour 2) Reading 53 pages in 2 hours = ___________ pages in one hour 3) Scoring 96 points in 6 games = ___________ points in one game Find each unit cost. Please show where you set up your ratio in fractional form. Make sure you round to the nearest cent if necessary. Remember: 4) $3.45 for 3.7 oz 5) $9 for 5 L = $___________ per oz = $___________ per L 6) Which is the better buy? Detergent: 32 fl oz for $1.99 = $________ OR 50 fl oz for $2.49 = $________
