Tour Highlights and Accommodations… Begin your Guatemala experience in Antigua with its richly textured ruins and colonial style architecture. Founded in 1543, Antigua was one of the most important Spanish colonies in the Americas, ruling over what are now Southern Mexico and all of Central America. The local markets, quiet courtyards with ornate gardens and the sights and sounds of colonial Spain permeate the atmosphere. No other town has the charm and appeal of colonial Antigua, where you will stay at the beautiful Hotel Casa Santo Domingo, (www.casasantodomingo.com.gt) built from the ruins of a 16th century monastery. The sounds of running water in the stone-carved fountains, evening candlelight throughout the hallways, and fresh flowers everywhere will simply take your breath away. Next, travel through the highlands with its great mountain peaks, plateaus and valleys to Lake Atitlán. Arrival at Lake Atitlán is magic. The three volcanoes that surround it stand out like majestic guards over what Aldous Huxley called the “most beautiful lake in the world. The highlight of the workshop will be your stay at the Hotel Atitlán (www.hotelatitlan.com) with magnificent views of the lake. Nestled in a fantasia of botanical gardens, this setting is truly inspirational. You will visit Chichicastanengo where thousands gather every Sunday as the Maya Indians bring an amazing variety of native handicrafts, produce and livestock to their world famous market. We will take a quiet and respectful walk through the Santo Tomas Church, built over a prehistoric archeological site, where pagan ceremonies are still performed on the steps while Catholic services in the Maya tradition go on inside. In Guatemala City you will stay at the beautiful Quinta Real (www.quintareal.com), overlooking the city and facing the colossal “Agua” and “Fuego” volcanoes. Its feel and look is a resplendent blend of Guatemalan and Mexican art and architecture. Tikal Add-On June 11 - 13, 2004 Discover Tikal, the lost world once inhabited by the ancient Maya more than two thousand years ago, a legacy to one of the most refined civilizations in the history of the world. Mammoth pyramids with temples on top attest to the skill, intelligence, and high civilization of these ancient peoples. Who were they? Why did they disappear? Their voices speak from the dust through the ruins they left behind, ruins that rival any Egyptian sites. You do not want to miss this experience of a lifetime.
