Preregistration is required. Duck, Duck, Goose Tuesday, January 5, 11 am – Noon Ducks and geese are on the move! Get to know our birds up close. Study feathers, beaks and feet. Make a webbed track then waddle down to the pond to see ducks and geese in action. Dress for the weather! Squirrely Squirrels Tuesday, February 2, 11 am – Noon Squirrels are full of energy and spunk as they hide acorns and jump from tree to tree. Come learn about these friendly mammals as we make a squirrelly craft, read a story and go on a squirrel sighting. Dress for the weather! Soil, Not Dirt Tuesday, March 8, 11 am – Noon Dig around in the soil and get dirty. Play a fun game and explore the three types of soil particles, classify soil using the ribbon test and discover plants and animals lurking under the surface. Pot a flower for your spring garden. Preregistration is required. Fantastic Fossils Sunday, January 17 2– 3 pm Fossils tell scientists how animals and plants lived a long time ago. Join us as we become Junior Paleontologists! Play the rock cycle game and discover in which rocks fossils form. Learn and create the four types of fossils and then excavate reptiles from eggs! Happy Valentines Day, Magical Habitats Mother Nature Sunday, March 20 Sunday, February 14 2– 3 pm 2:30 – 3:30 pm Nature is full of magic! Did you give a valentine to Mother Learn what a habitat is Nature this year? Join us as we and discover a few celebrate a day of love and kindness animals that call the park at the park! Join us as we learn all about ducks and the places they call home. We'll practice our duck calls, make a delightful duck craft and go on a nature hike. Nutty Squirrels Wednesday, February 3, 1– 2 pm Squirrels are so silly! Come learn about these friendly mammals, gather nuts in a fun game and make a squirrelly craft to take home! Then spy on the squirrels at Crowder as they jump from tree to tree searching for the perfect nut. Quackers Wednesday, January 6, 11 am– Noon Fly down to the park and discover Crowder’s Quackers! Learn how ducks & geese communicate with each other, how they stay warm in the wintertime and what they like to eat through experiments and discovery centers! Then use our binoculars & spy on the winter waterfowl as they swim on the pond. Sassy Squirrels Wednesday, February 3, 11 am– Noon Did you know that the grey squirrel is North Carolina's state mammal? Join us as we explore the adaptations that make this mammal so mesmerizing through stories, crafts and a nature hike. Magic of Soil Wednesday, March 9, 1– 2 pm This time of year we start thinking about planting a garden. The “Magic Soil Bag” will teach your child how special and important soil is for healthy plants and wildlife. Join us for a "dirty" snack and choose a flower to plant in our garden. Soil Science Wednesday, March 9, 11 am– Noon There is so much more to soil than dirt! Prepare to get messy as we explore the ground beneath us! Conduct the "soil shake test" to help us classify soil particles into sand, clay and loam! Also explore the "Magic Soil Bag" with a naturalist to learn the importance of soil in our ecosystem. Numbers in Nature Monday, March 7; 10:30–11:00 am Practice your numbers through centers-based activities and develop your fine motor skills using natural objects. Bird Bonanza Saturday, February 13; 11 am– Noon Birds come in different shapes, sizes and patterns! Join us for a morning of bird crafts. Use natural objects to create birds found in the woods and build your own make believe bird! Then paint pictures using feathers and learn the importance of color in our feathered friends. This free drop-in discovery table does not require preregistration. Meet a park naturalist on the boardwalk to study a different critter each month.
