Jessie Daniel Ames Lecture Endowment
The Jessie Daniel Ames Lecture Series focuses on the professional and civic achievements of women.
Established in 1985, the lecture series is named for Jessie Daniel Ames, a 1902 alumna of Southwestern
University who championed the causes of voting rights for women, prison reform and anti-lynching
legislations. A business person and leader in the national suffragist movement, she was a founder and
the first president of the Texas League of Women Voters and was one of the first women delegates to
the state and national Democratic conventions. The Jessie Daniel Ames Lectures are one facet of the
Women's Studies Program at Southwestern University. The Women's Studies Program is funded in part
through a matching grant by the RGK Foundation of Austin. This lecture series was developed to bring to
campus speakers from the national community of leaders on women's issues for the Women's Studies
Program.

Established in 1988 by the Houston law firm of Vinson & Elkins to honor the legacy of Mr. A. Frank
Smith, Jr. This fund supports distinguished lectures, books for the Library collection, online and print
media, and other scholarly programs in the areas of the Humanities, the Social Sciences, and the A.
Frank Smith, Jr. Library Center.
Established in 2005 by Dan Patrick Stephens, Class of 1996, alumni and friends of Southwestern
University, in recognition of Dr. Jimmy Smith to provide research funds to assist kinesiology students
with costs associated with their collaborative research initiatives with faculty and with costs associated
with travel and lodging for professional conferences.
Established by friends of Senator Tower for the maintenance of the John Goodwin Tower Collection.
Established in 1998 by Lou B. Tower, Penny Tower Cook, and Jeanne Tower Cox in memory of Marion G.
Tower to provide a permanent fund for study abroad to enhance students' understanding of political,
cultural, and social features of societies around the world, and for students to attend scholarly
conferences in association with faculty mentors.
Established by the late Mrs. Isla Carroll Turner and designated by the Executive Committee as an
endowment for maintenance of the President's home.

Established in 2005, the Robert & Ruby Charitable Trust Endowed Paideia Scholars Fund supports the
activities of Southwestern's Paideia Scholars by providing one-time stipends during the three-year

engagement projects to assist the students in fulfilling their Paideia Program objectives.

activities and/or internships for Paideia Scholars, with priority given to projects dedicated to
environmental sustainability and land conservation and restoration.

associated with the fulfillment of any of the Paideia strands.

The Mary Lynn Webb Starnes Music Award in Piano
Awarded to a full-time faculty member for conspicuous accomplishment in furthering the aims of the
University. This award is made possible by a gift to the endowment by Dr. Finch's wife and their two
sons, Dr. William Tyree Finch and Dr. Richard Carrington Finch, Class of 1965. Dr. William C. Finch was
the eleventh President of Southwestern University.
Established in 1999 by Dr. W. Joseph King, Class of 1993, to support the creative endeavors of
Southwestern students. Specifically, KCF will seek to fund the most innovative or visionary student
projects. Projects from all academic and artistic disciplines will be considered; multidisciplinary projects
will be strongly encouraged. Further, KCF funded projects may be curricular or extracurricular in nature.
Established by Dorothy Drummer on the occasion of Merriman Morton, Class of 1963, being presented
the Distinguished Alumnus Award on April 26, 1996. Awarded to an outstanding senior with a major in
the department of economics and business demonstrating business leadership and potential for success
in the business community.
Established in memory of the Rev. David Knox Porter, an alumnus of the University, by his daughters,
Mrs. Meade F. Griffin and Mrs. Leslie Etter. This award is given annually to the outstanding pretheological student.
Established in 2010 by the University at the request of W. Joseph King, Class of 1993, donor of the King
Creativity Endowed Fund, using the unspent, accumulated withdrawals from the King Creativity Fund.
The Potter Prize shall be awarded to the student who is chosen as the overall most creative King
Creativity Scholar for the given year.
Given by Mrs. C. W. Webb and the late Mr. Webb, in memory of their daughter, Mary Lynn, to an
outstanding senior for proficiency in music performance and great promise in the field of music.

Endowed Fund Description
Established by The Brown Foundation, Inc. in 1978 and augmented by a second generous gift from the
foundation in 2006, the Brown Scholarships are the highest financial aid award given at Southwestern.
Brown Scholars have outstanding academic and leadership qualifications and are selected through a
highly competitive application and interview process. Brown Scholarships cover full tuition, room and
board.
Established by Mrs. Minnie A. Howell in memory of her husband, the late Dr. E. P. Howell, to provide
scholarships for premedical and preministerial students.
