AIMS The German Department follows the aims of the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty. CURRICULUM PROVISION, HOMEWORK, SETTING See Faculty provision for curriculum provision and homework. Setting is not carried out because of the small pupil numbers involved STOCK Pupils' text books, teachers' books, listening/reading/writing/speaking support materials, worksheets, tape transcripts, past papers, readers, video and audiocassettes, newspapers and magazines are kept in Room L9 and L10 on shelves or in labelled filing cabinets. (See yearspecific resource lists for further details). Literary texts and notes on these are kept in metal cabinet in L6. In the LRC there are language magazines, videos, geographical/historical/political and other "landeskundliche" background materials, further readers, literary texts, a grammar/linguistics reference section and a selection of dictionaries. LRC stock is evaluatedrenewed by Diana Alexander (Librarian) and SLA. In L4 and L11, the Computer Rooms, and via the terminal in L9 there is networked access via Languages or Languages Deutsch to FR keys, LOGO! software, Gapkit, bilingual dictionaries, Unterwegs, German PPT Resources, It’s German, German Reading Questions, 10 deutsche Spiele, Eurotalk/Worldtalk and Oscar Lake. CURRENT COURSEBOOKS and SPECIFICATIONS 1nd Year ML1 pupils use Logo 1 (Heinemann). 2 nd Year ML1 pupils use Logo 2 (Heinemann). 2 nd Year ML2 pupils use Logo 1 (Heinemann). rd 3 Year ML1 pupils use Logo 3 (Heinemann). 3rd Year ML2 pupils use Lernpunkt Deutsch 1 (Nelson). 4 th Year ML1 pupils use Lernpunkt Deutsch 3 (Nelson). 4thYear ML2 pupils use Lernpunkt Deutsch 2 (Nelson). 5th Year ML1 pupils use Lernpunkt Deutsch 3 (Nelson). 5th Year ML2 pupils also use Lernpunkt Deutsch 3 (Nelson) or Logo 4 (Heinemann). At the end of the 5th year most pupils take AQA GCSE Higher Level papers. A small number may take Foundation papers in some of the skills. The LVI follows the Edexcel AS specification. The UVI follows the Edexcel A2 specification. The main coursebook, Brennpunkt (with useful website at www.brennpunkt.nelson.co.uk) is supplemented by topicbased materials from a variety of sources, grammar materials from InfoGrammatik, GrammatikPlus and Grammatik Leicht Gelernt, current affairs materials from Authentik and widespread use of the internet. LVI pupils begin the study of one literary text for coursework piece I in the UVI UVI pupils select their own nonliterary theme for coursework piece II All pupils have access to full network and internet resources.

3. EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: TRIPS AND CLUBS. TRIPS. An exchange with the IGS Mutterstadt ran for the first time in 1999 for 4 th Year pupils. This was expanded in 2000 to include 3ML1 pupils and is still current practice. A second exchange for Sixth Formers was started in 2001 and ran as a programme for two years. This was replaced in 2004 by a Berlin Study Trip as numbers were insufficient for the full exchange to run satisfactorily and ran again in October 2005 and 2006. In 2007/8 an exchange has again proved possible. It is also recognised that Sixth Form pupils may prefer to make use of other opportunities for travel, capitalising either on their own personal existing contacts or on the AngloAustrian Exchange Scheme/Summer courses abroad. Courses run by the Goethe Institut are also offered through school. In December 2007 a day trip to the Aachen Christmas Market was on offer for the eleventh year running to all learners of German throughout the School. CLUBS. The German Magazine Club is now in its 15th year. Its members meet once weekly on Thursday lunchtimes and produce an edition of the inschool magazine "TOLL" once a term. The magazine, which is distributed to teaching groups, typically includes articles on German culture, interviews with members of staff, quizzes, puzzles and cartoons either in German or with a German theme. The club comprises members from 1st to Sixth Form inclusive, with an Editor from the Sixth Form. In the Summer Term 2001 a Creative Writing Competition was launched by our FLA Dirk Lepping and EBI. This has now been replaced by entries in The Bristol and West of England Comenius Centre National Poetry and Song Competition; during 2004/2005 a member of the 4 th Year, Matthew Revett, won a prize in this competition for a poem submitted on the theme of friendship.
