For this first installment we will introduce Sandra Gilbert Stockhausen, the president of VIAHA 3 1. Sandra, how long have you had horses or been involved with horses? I got my first horse when I was 6 1/2 years old. She was a grade mare named Topsy and she was about 14.2 Hands. My Dad bought her from a local horse trader who did not know that she was in foal. Therefore, within several months we were a two‐horse family. The old mare was then rebred to a Thoroughbred stallion of our neighbours and we were up to three horses. Luckily I grew up on a big dairy farm and the extra mouths weren't really a problem. I rode in my first horse show at the riding stable where I took lessons on my seventh birthday. 2. So, without giving away your age, you’ve been involved with horses for about 50 years! Careful, didn’t your mother ever tell you that its not polite to ask a woman her age????? 3. So you didn’t always have an Arabian? When did you get involved with Arabs? I moved to Nanaimo in 1973 with my ½ TB mare and found boarding at Twin Cedars Arabians (owned by Gerald McDonald). I rode my mare until she was 25 and then needed another horse. Watching all the Arabians over the years while boarding at Twin Cedars they charmed me and I knew that an Arabian would be the breed my next horse. 4. What riding disciplines do you participate in now, and what have you done in the past? 4 I ride dressage and show Sport Horse in hand now. In the past I rode Western including all the games events. My ½ TB was a very good Trail horse and won many classes. When I was a teenager, the shows I rode in held the pleasure classes both English and Western in the mornings and then it was a flat out afternoon of gymkhana events. Many times we rode our horses to the shows and every year we rode our horses in the various parades. My Mother would show up in the car with our changes of clothes and tack and brushes to buff up our horses. When I got my big gray Arabian “Surnik” I did Dressage, Hunter over fences, side saddle, and even made a Native Costume. So you really have done it all!!! 5. Why did you choose to become involved with VIAHA and the executive? I started out as a VIAHA recreation member so I could attend clinics and other events and then became a full member when I wanted to start competing again. I feel that AHA and VIAHA are important to showcase the wonderful Arabian horse so I became a director, vice‐president and finally president. 6. What’s the best thing about being the President? The best thing about being president is getting to promote our breed. It might be a one on one situation or doing a big presentation to many people but I like to get the word out as much as possible. 5 7. What’s the funniest thing that has happened to you with a horse? The funniest thing that has happened to me with a horse has to be the time I had just been selected as the MSA (Matsqui, Sumas, Abbotsford) riding queen and was riding in the barrel race at the end of the day. I guess my mare was getting a bit cranky and when I turned the last barrel I gave her a pop with my bat she gave me a buck in return. I landed in front of the horn and when I stopped I was stuck. The judge who had presented me with my Queen banner after winning the Horsemanship part of the competition had to haul me back into the saddle. Not a classy way to finish that day. I think I could even see a slight smirk on my horse's face. 8. Is there anything else that you would like to comment on? The entire executive of VIAHA works hard to put on our shows but we are not getting younger so any new young people are most welcome to come and find out what we do. Some of you might know this horseman, but he will be new to many of you. So by way of introducing you to him.... Rob: Jim, I understand you have been riding and around horses for quite a while.... Can you tell me a little bit about your riding past. Jim : I first got interested in horses in my early teens and started riding at the same time Rob: What disciplines have you competed in? Jim: I have shown in Halter and ridden Western Pleasure, English Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Show Hack, Western Riding, Reining and Trail Horse (my specialty) Rob: Wow, you have done it all. You have come very well qualified to judge our classes. Tell me a little about your own show career? Jim: My biggest win was Canadian National Champion Half Arabian Trail Horse 1979. 8 As well I have won many West Pleasure Classes at Arab Shows and many Western Pleasure Championships at open shows. In Trail I have won many class both at the Arab shows and have won many Championship in open trail against all breeds. In Western riding my nation champion trail horse was undefeated over 5 years against all breeds. I have won in English Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure and Show Hack. Rob: and what about your show judge career? Jim: I have judged Open Shows all over the Island Rob: Welcome to judging at our shows this year Jim. I know that the riders look forward to the trails that are set for them and the judging and feedback that you will give them. And who knows, maybe we will see you back in the saddle competing again in 2017???? Did you read this one???????? A city dweller came to a farm and saw a beautiful horse. He decided he had to have the animal. He bargained with the farmer and the farmer finally sold him the horse. The city man jumped on the horse and said, "Giddyup!" The horse didn't budge. The farmer explained, "This is a special kind of horse. He'll only move if you say, 'Praise the Lord.' To stop him, you have to say, 'Amen.'" Keeping this in mind, the new owner yelled, "Praise the Lord!" whereupon the horse took off with great speed. Soon horse and rider were headed for a cliff. Just in time the rider remembered to say "Amen!" The horse came to a screeching halt right at the edge of the cliff. Relieved, the rider raised his eyes to heaven and exclaimed, "Praise the Lord!" 9 Region 17 Championship Show July 26 to 30, 2016 Stampede Park, Calgary AB Sport Horse Division: July 26 to 28 Main Ring Classes: July 27 to 30 Entries Close Friday, June 27, 2016 PreShow: Hosted by the Calgary Arabian Horse Association Monday, July 25, 2016 10 VIAHA MEMBERS RESULTS AT RECENT SHOWS THE WEEKEND OF APRIL 15, 16, 17 FOUND A STRONG CONTINGENT OF VIAHA MEMBERS ATTENDING THE BC HALF ARABIAN HORSE ASSOCIATION CLASS A SHOW AT THUNDERBIRD SHOW PARK.
