Joseph Warren: A Patriot and a Mason
oseph Warren was educated at Harvard, enrolling at the age of fourteen
to pursue a career in Medicine. By the age of twenty two, he was the
youngest doctor in Boston, and reputed to be one of the finest physicians in
the city. His patients were some of the most prominent members of Boston
Society, including John Hancock; John and Samuel Adams; the Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson and his family; and British General Thomas Gage
and wife Margaret. At the same time his medical career began to flourish, he
became more involved in Masonry. On May 30, 1769, the Earl of Dalhousie,
Grand Master of Masons in Scotland, granted Joseph Warren a commission as
Provincial Grand Master of Boston.
J
Later, on March 7, 1772, Joseph received another commission as Grand Master for the Continent of America from Dalhousie’s successor, the Earl of
Dumfries. Dr. Warren belonged to and attended St. Andrews Lodge with Paul
Revere, John Hancock, and Daniel Webster. The Lodge met on the second
floor above the Green Dragon Tavern. Dr. Warren and many of the members
of St. Andrews Lodge were members of the Sons of Liberty, which also had
its headquarters at the Green Dragon Tavern. It is said that the Boston Tea
Party was planned and executed from the Green Dragon Tavern. St. Andrews
Lodge went on refreshment to take part in the raid alongside the Sons of Liberty. In response, the British Parliament enacted measures, the “Intolerable
Acts,” to hold the colony responsible for repayment of the tea destroyed, by
suspending the Colonial Government and closing the port of Boston.
In September of 1774, after representatives from the towns met, Dr. Warren
wrote the “Suffolk Resolves” to call for a boycott of British goods and for
local militias to prepare for armed resistance. This document was carried by
Paul Revere and delivered to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia at
Carpenter Hall. The “Suffolk Resolves” were overwhelmingly endorsed by
the Continental Congress, a major step on the road to Independence. Dr.
Warren learned through his sources that the British were planning a march
on Lexington and Concord to seize the provincial gunpowder and arms.
He sent Paul Revere and William Dawes on their famous ride to warn the
militias. After the Battle of Lexington, Dr. Warren organized Captain Bene-
dict Arnold, Ethan Allen, and the Green Mountain Boys to seize the cannons
at Fort Ticonderoga. These cannons which were later used to evict the British
from Boston. Brother Joseph Warren showed his Fortitude and Fidelity by
taking up arms against the British.
At the age of 34 Warren was appointed Major General in command of the
Continental Forces at the Battle of Breeds Hill, better known as Bunker Hill.
General Warren left the safety of his command, insisting on fighting along-
side the volunteers in the fiercest part of the battle. That day on Bunker Hill
Brother Warren showed that “His Life You May Take but His Integrity
Never,” becoming one of the first martyrs of the American Revolution. After
the battle, the British buried him in a shallow grave. When the British were
driven out of Boston, Brother Warrens Body was raised by his Fellow Patriots
and Brother Masons. Brother Paul Revere identified the body by the false
tooth he had crafted for his friend. Brother Warren was reburied with a full
Masonic Ceremony and honors.
After the War, King Solomon’s Lodge in Charlestown erected a monument
on Bunker Hill to honor Brother Warren as a Patriot and Mason, using land
donated by Brother Benjamin Russell. The monument was an 18-foot Tus-
can pillar placed on a platform eight feet high by eight feet square. King
Solomon’s Lodge gave the ground and the monument to the Bunker Hill
Monument Association, an organization formed in 1823 to build a
monument to Honor all who fought and died in the cause of Liberty. King
Solomon’s Lodge placed one condition on the transfer of land: the original
monument to Brother Warren must remain.
On June 17, 1825, after opening, The Grand Lodge formed a procession and
marched to Bunker Hill in Charlestown to join Brother Lafayette, representatives from five New England states, and the Grand Lodge of New Jersey.
There, they witnessed Grand Master John Abbot, assisted by Senior Past
Grand Master Isaiah Thomas, lay the monument cornerstone. Brothers
Lafayette and Webster addressed those assembled. When completed, the
monument—made of the finest Italian marble and standing approximately
nine feet tall on a granite pedestal—was inscribed, “Don’t fire ‘til you see the
whites of their eyes”.
Brother Warren exemplifies what it means to be a Mason. Brethren, May the
Grand Artificer of the Universe continue to bestow His Manifold Blessings
upon you and the United States of America.
Fraternally,
Ted M. D’Annunzio
Worshipful Master

Constitution and Laws
With the Annual Communication of Grand Lodge in late April, I thought it
would be a great idea to pick out some of the more informative excerpts from
the By-Laws related to the Annual Communication. If you are planning to
attend, here is some useful information:
Article III.-Communications and Elections
S E C T I O N 1. A N N U A L CO M M U N I C AT I O N O F G R A N D LO D G E
Part 1. Date and Time of Annual Communication. The Annual Commu-
nication of the Grand Lodge shall be held at 9:00 A.M. on two consecutive
days in April each year after the 15th of the month but shall not conflict
with Passover or Maundy Thursday, subject nevertheless to be changed
as to time and date of meeting by a majority vote of the Grand Lodge at
its annual communication provided that such change shall not cause conflict with Passover or Maundy Thursday.”
The Annual Communication will be April 26, 27 and 28 this year.
Part 2. Roll Call and Commencement. The Grand Lodge shall proceed to
business at the hour and place appointed as soon as a representation of at
least fifteen lodges on record is present.
Part 3. Time of Continued Proceedings. The Grand Lodge shall meet at the
hour on each day to which it shall have previously been called.”
The Communication at 9:00am on Wednesday, April 28th will break for
lunch at noon, then return on the hour announced (usually around 2:00pm).
Jumping down a bit…
Part 8. Arrangement of Assembly. The representatives and Past Masters of
each lodge shall be seated together at the communications of the Grand
Lodge. They shall be arranged according to Districts, the odd-numbered
Districts on the South side and the even-numbered Districts on the North
side of the room…
According to the By-Laws, our district will be on the north side of the room,
and for those who don’t know, each District has a little flag denoting where
we are to sit, find that and you are good to go.
Hopefully this information is useful to you, and I look forward to hanging
with everyone at the Annual Communication.
See everyone in Lodge,
Richard W. LaBaw

Food for Thought
isdom alone is the right coin with which to deal, and with it everything of real worth is bought and sold. And for it, Temperance and
Justice, Fortitude and Prudence, are a kind of preliminary purification.
W
And those who instituted the Mysteries for us appear to have been by no
means contemptible persons, and to have intimated in a veiled manner that
whoever descends into Hades uninitiated and without being a partaker in the
Mysteries, shall lie in the mire; but that whoever arrived there purified and
initiated, shall dwell with the Gods. Yet as said those who preside over the
Mysteries :‘Many are the candidates seeking Initiation,
But few are the perfected Initiates’
—SOCRATES, as quoted by Plato
But these few are, in my judgment, true wisdom-lovers; and that I may be of
their number I shall leave nothing unattempted, but shall exert myself in all
possible ways.”

Registration Procedure
for Electronic Balloting
Deadline Friday, April 8th
By R.W. Barry P. Kornspan, PDDGM
Chairman, Balloting and Registration Committee
Per C&L, Past Masters may cast their ballots for elected Grand Lodge
offices (Title 3, Article IV, Section 2, Part 1) using an Internet connection. This article will outline the process you must follow in order to
vote at a location other than the Balloting & Registration Room at the
Annual Communication in Atlantic City. You may vote from any
computer that has an Internet connection and Web browser.
You must request an off-site ballot by pre-registering.
To pre-register, you must send an email by Friday, April 8th, 2016 to
[email protected] containing:
• Your full name
• Your email address
• Your Member Number (found on your dues card or through
your Lodge Secretary)
• NJ Lodge Name/Number
Once your eligibility is verified, you will receive a confirmation email
stating that you have successfully registered. Approximately 5-7 days
prior to the start of balloting (April 27), you will receive an email with
an encrypted link that will, once balloting begins, take you to the
appropriate webpage. The email will also contain additional information and instructions.
Remember, registration for off-site voting will
close at 11:59pm Eastern Time on Friday, April
8th, 2016.
Balloting will be open from approximately 12:00 noon on Wednesday,
April 27th until sometime between 9:00am and 10:00am Thursday,
April 28th (all times Eastern). Once balloting starts, an email will be
sent to those who have registered reminding them that the ballot is
now open. Please note that the times for the start and end of off-site
voting are variable depending on when the Grand Master starts and
stops balloting on-site. Off-site balloting will end at the same time as
on-site balloting.
Please do not take a chance and wait until the last
minute–vote before 9:00am Thursday!
You may request an off-site ballot if you are a Past Master (PM) and a
member in good standing of a Lodge under the jurisdiction of the
Grand Lodge of New Jersey, F&AM. Please note that the WM, SW
and JW must cast the vote assigned to their office on-site (per C&L).
If the WM, SW or JW is also a PM (previous year) and they are not
able to attend the Annual Communication, they may only cast their
PM vote off-site and must follow the procedure above to register for
that ballot.
Please address all questions regarding this procedure to
[email protected].
