Food And Drink In Tudor Times
Wealthy Tudor people ate very well. They ate lots of fresh food
as there were no refridgerators or freezers in those days.
They ate lots of meat such as beef, pork, rabbit, deer and
pheasant. Rich people sometimes ate swans.
Tudor people would cook their food over an open fire. They
preserved their food by rubbing salt into it.
Tudor tables were made from oak. They used their hands to eat
as there were no knives or forks. Tudor people often ate bread
with their meals and drank beer or cider.
In a wealthy household there was always plenty to eat and food
that was left over was given to the servants to eat.
In early Tudor times they only ate fruit and vegetables that
were in season, such as cabbages, onions, apples, pears and
cherries. Later when the Tudors started exploring other
countries they brought back new vegetables such as potatoes and
peppers.
In Tudor times it was compulsory to eat fish on a Friday. Poor
people couldn’t afford to do this. They didn’t have an unlimited
supply of food. They often ate a herb and vegetable soup called
pottage. This would be served with bread. Poor people also kept
chickens that were used for their eggs and their meat.
