About 100 family members and friends of
Marine Cpl. Christopher Bordoni gathered on
Monday, Veterans Day, in Ithaca’s Cass Park to
dedicate the Chris Bordoni Fitness Trailhead.
Bordoni, an Ithaca High School graduate,
was 21 when he was critically injured Jan. 18,
2012, while serving with the U.S. Marine Corps
in Afghanistan. He was receiving treatment at
the San Antonio Military Medical Center when
he died that April 3.
The crowd listened quietly while Bordoni’s
mother, Carol Sprague, of the Village of Lansing, spoke about Chris’ dedication to fitness
and how the trailhead is a suitable memorial for
a dedicated athlete. The trailhead — part of the
Cayuga Waterfront Trail on the Cayuga Inlet,
across from Island Health and Fitness — consists of eight outdoor stations, focused on upperbody strength.
His younger brother, Casey, of Lansing, remembered Bordoni spotting him while weightlifting. Bordoni would press down on the bar
with a finger when he had trouble getting the
bar up. “It was his way of telling me to keep going and not give up, and he wasn’t going to give
up.”
The memorial grew out of the Bordoni and

Sprague families’ desire to give back to the community unused funds that had been collected in
Bordoni’s name.
Landscape architect Rick Manning, of Ithaca, who designed the trailhead, said it was the
smoothest process he has ever seen for approving a public project. Casey Bordoni said while it
took a lot of planning and seemed to take a long
time, “It was worth every minute it took.”
Casey Bordoni went on to say the family “can’t
thank people enough. A lot of these people are
taking the day off to come down here and stand
out in the cold for an hour, and just goes to show
how much they support Chris and the family. ”
In addition to donations of funds, the trailhead is the result of many donations of time,

skill and supplies from
the community.
One of these fundraising efforts, the Bordoni 5K
Extreme Fitness Challenge, will return on
May 10, according to Terry
Ciaschi, of Ithaca, the
membership services director at Island Health and
Fitness. Ciaschi said the
family is still exploring
how best to give back to the
community with money
raised from the event.
After a demonstration
of the eight stations, Bordoni’s family held the ribbon as it was cut by his sister Jackie, of Horseheads.

biggest contributors have
been individuals and businesses.
“We really need that
Indiegogo crowdfunding
to work. We can’t finish
the project without it,”
said Crawford, a Freeville
resident.
Some businesses and
professional contractors
have done the cottage’s
concrete, electrical and
plumbing work without
charge, Crawford said.
“These
professionals
have really rallied,” he
said. “Businesses show
up, do the work, and then
say, ‘Don’t worry about
(the bill).’”
The
cottages
are
framed and enclosed. Initial electrical and insulation work is completed,
and wallboard is going up,
according to Second Wind
founder Carmen Guidi.
He attributed much of the
project’s success to volunteer and financial support
from local businesses, local people and college students.
“It’s incredible. It’s

been two months since we
started (construction),”
Guidi said.
An average of 50 people volunteer at the construction site every Saturday, he said.
The Dec. 1 deadline is
only for the project’s first
phase. In total, Second
Wind is planned to have
18 cottages, a community
building and a social
worker on staff. The full
project is scheduled for
completion in two to three
years, Guidi said.
Tenants will pay what-
ever rent they can afford,
plus utilities.
That should fund the
social worker’s salary, according to Guidi.
Requirements to live at
Second Wind Cottages are
getting worked out now,
but alcohol and drugs
won’t be allowed, Guidi
said.
The efforts are supported by the Christian
group Community Faith
Partners, and Guidi said
Bible studies will be available to cottage residents
but not required.
