Victorian Roses 20001 1 ¾ yard outer border 20071 ¼ yard blocks 20011 1 yard setting triangles 20072 ¾ yard blocks 20021 1 ½ yard sashing 20081 ¾ yard blocks, corners 20031 1 ½ yard pinwheels & 20113 ½ yard corners, triangles 20051 ¾ yard blocks 20132 1 ½ yard blocks & sashing binding 20061 1 yard inner border 20122 ¼ yard block centers 20091 6 yards backing This quilt uses two traditional blocks, Sister’s Choice and Grandma’s Favorite, and double sashing for a different effect. There will be 12 Grandma’s Favorite blocks and 6 Sister’s Choice blocks, each will be 10 ½” unfinished or 10” finished. Sister’s Choice- make 6 Each block requires one 2 ½” square of medium green 20122, four 2 ½” squares of green 20021, four 2 ½” squares of pink 20071, four 2 ½” squares of light floral 20081, four 2 ½”squares of tan 20132; four 3” squares of pink 20051 and four 3” squares of tan 20132. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on each tan 3” square, layer right sides together with a pink 3” square. Sew ¼” each side of the drawn line. Cut along the drawn line, press open, trim to 2 ½”. Assemble the block as illustrated. Check that each measures 10 ½”. Grandma’s Favorite- make 12 Each block requires one 2 ½” square of medium green 20122, four 2 ½” squares of light floral 20081, four 2 ½” squares of pink 20051; eight 3” squares of green 20031 and eight 3” squares of light green 20072. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each light green 3” square, layer with a darker green square. Sew a seam ¼” from the line, cut along the line, press open, trim to 2 ½”. Sew four units together to form the corner pinwheels, using the illustration as a guide. Assemble the block as shown, press and trim to 10 ½”. Sash- 48 Cut 12 strips 2 ½” wide across the width of tan 20132 and green 20021. Sew one light and one dark strip together, press seam toward the darker fabric. Cut into 10 ½” segments. Each strip set should make 4 sashing strips. Extra fabric is figured into the yardage amount if a fifth strip set is needed. Corner Blocks- make 17 Cut 2 strips 2 ½” wide across the width of green 20113 and light floral 20081. Sew long sides together, press toward darker fabric. Cut the strip into 2 ½” segments, sew pairs together as shown to make 17 cornerstones. Cut the 20011 paisley print into three 16 ½” squares and two 8” squares. Cut the larger squares in half diagonally twice to make 12 triangles- there will be 2 extra triangles. These are the setting squares for the sides, top and bottom of the quilt. Cut the smaller squares in half once to make 4 triangles for the corners. Cutting the setting triangles this way will put the straight grain of the fabric along the outside edge, rather than having a bias edge along the edge. These triangles are slightly oversized, trim after sewing the body of the quilt together. Cut four 7 ½” squares from the green lace 20113 fabric. Cut in half diagonally twice to make 16 triangles- there will be 2 extra. Using the illustration, sew rows together on the diagonal, watching the placement of the sashing and corner blocks. The darker sashing strips will frame the Grandma’s Favorite blocks, the lighter sashing strips will frame the Sister’s Choice blocks. Trim the center of the quilt as needed, press carefully to prevent distortion. Finishing: Cut nine 2 ½” strips from green 20061 for the inner border, trim selvedges and sew short ends together. Add to sides, then top and bottom of quilt. Cut nine 5 ½” strips from floral 20001 for the outer border. Trim the selvedges and sew the short ends together. Measure your quilt at this point, if it varies from the size listed, adjust the outer borders as needed. Cut 2 border pieces approximately 85 ½” long for the sides and 2 pieces 75 ½” long for the top and bottom of the quilt- add or subtract from these measurements as needed . Cut nine 2 ½” strips of green 20031 for binding. Quilt as desired, bind, add a label and enjoy your quilt!
