Whatisfigurativelanguage?
Figurativelanguageislanguagethatdescribessomethingbycomparingittosomethingelse.
Figurativelanguagegoesbeyondtheliteralmeaningofwordstodescribeorexplainasubject.
Therearemanytypesoffigurativelanguage,includingsimiles,metaphors,alliteration,
onomatopoeia,imagery(seeimageryreview),personification,andhyperbole.
Authorsusefigurativelanguagetohelpthereaderseebeyondthewrittenwordsonthepageandto
visualizewhatisgoingoninthestoryorpoem.
Simile
Asimileisafigureofspeechthatcomparestwounlikethings,usuallyusingthewordslikeoras.
Examples:
Hisfeetwereasbigasboats. She’saslightasafeather.
Thesnowwaslikeablanket.
Sheatelikeabird.
Metaphor
Ametaphorcomparestwounlikethingswithoutusingthewordslikeoras.Thecomparisonis
insteadmadeusingsomeformofthe“be”verb.

Myhandsareice.
Alliteration
Alliterationistherepetitionofaconsonantsoundatthebeginningoforwithinwords.Itisusedto
createamelody,setamood,highlightimportantwordsandlines,andpointoutsimilaritiesand
contrastsbetweenelementsofapoemortext.

Sallysellsseashellsbytheseashore.
