WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS
Assessments for a New Career
Group sessions with a counselor designed to assist in mapping out changes in career paths. A
number of assessments are available to aid in determining the best path to take in changing
vocational directions. (1 hour)
Basic Job Search
Not sure where to start? This workshop discusses basic job search strategies to help you gain
a competitive edge. In addition, learn how to explore your skills and network (1.5 hours)
Beginning Microsoft Excel
Come enjoy learning how to use the Microsoft Excel program. Designed specifically for
beginners this course will introduce users to the basic vocabulary and skills necessary for
Excel. We will then examine how to create basic formulas, how to set up common Excel
documents, and how to print. (1 hour)
Beginning Microsoft Word
In this course, we will show you some of the different features that Microsoft Word 2007 has
to offer and how to utilize them to create documents and make the online job application
process much easier. Specific topics covered in this course will be using menus and tabs,
copying and pasting information, the undo and redo features, spacing and centering, font
sizing and color changes, and how to save your work. (1 hour)
Computer Basics for Beginners
This course is for people who are new to computers and want a guide to help them get started
on the right track. The class will teach basic skills such as how to start and shut off your
computer, how to use a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. It will also showcase how to deal with
some common problems you might experience when first using a computer. The course will
start with a guided tutorial and will conclude with a question and answer session that
provides attendees with an opportunity to address specific computer questions they might
have. (1 hour)
Computer Basics Continued - Know Your Settings
This course will explore the different settings options found in the Control Panel section of
your computer. We'll discuss which settings we need to be comfortable with as beginners with
the computers and which settings we should keep away from at the start. Topics will include
how to uninstall programs, add printers, connect to wireless networks, and more. (1.5 hours)
Health Care Provider Information
A representative from Fidelis or United Health Care will be here to discuss health insurance
options under the Affordable Care Act and assist you individually in applying for health
insurance through New York’s Marketplace.
Internet Basics
In this course Librarian Chris Finger from the Geneva Public Library will explore the basic
parts of an internet web browser. We will also teach students how to go online and use search
engines and be safe and smart when visiting websites. (1 hour)
Interviewing Techniques
You got the interview, now what do you do? Register for this workshop! Learn what
employers really want to know. Learn what questions you should be able to answer before
going into an interview. Learn the importance of making a good first impression. Learn
techniques regarding, appearance, body language, preparation, and attitude. (2 hours)
Job Search Over 50
Mature workers face some unique challenges in the job search process. This workshop
provides tools to help overcome challenges and use maturity to your advantage. (2 hours)

If you are interested in upgrading your computer skills and would like to take online courses
at your own pace, Metrix may be for you. Metrix is a self-directed online learning program you
can access anywhere with high-speed internet. (1 hour)
Navigating the Civil Service System
Explore job opportunities within the civil service system—working for the city, county, state,
or federal governments. Learn how to use the websites and what to look for on civil service
listings. (1.5 hours)
Networking Made Easier
You’re looking for work and people ask you ”What do you do?” Or you’re in an interview and
the interviewer says “Tell me about yourself.” HOW do you respond? This workshop helps
you craft your own professional introduction in order to network in a variety of situations.
Everyone needs to be able to efficiently communicate with confidence. Learn to discuss your
unique skills and strengths to jump start your job search. (1.5 hours)
PowerPoint for Beginners
Presentations can be intimidating and tough to prepare for. This class will examine the basics
behind using Microsoft PowerPoint to organize and enhance your presentation by creating
slides and displaying a slide show! In this course we will discuss how to format slides, change
backgrounds, insert text and pictures, wrap text around pictures, work with word art and slide
transitions. (1 hour)
Resume 101
Designed for job-seekers who either have never had a resume or whose resume may be
outdated. A resume is a summary of past experiences, skills, abilities, qualifications, and
personal characteristics. Your resume highlights your accomplishments so a potential
employer can easily see the assets you would bring to the business. Review and revision are
necessary in keeping your resume up-to-date (2 hours)
Social Media
Online networking can be one of your most valuable resources when job-searching. Take
advantage of this opportunity to learn more about how to get the most out of LinkedIn,
Facebook and Twitter in order to build your professional network. Learn how to get
recommendations, research employers, display your expertise, and get noticed. (1.5 hours)
Training Options
Finger Lakes Works may have funds available to help people who need training either to
change careers or to enhance skills necessary for advancement to a better job. Our “Training
Options” workshop is an orientation that provides info on what is needed to access these
funds available under the Workforce Investment Act. It will also provide things to think about
when choosing a school or program. (1 hour)
WorkKeys
Employers want workers who can read, apply math, locate information, and demonstrate
“soft’ skills. WorkKeys tests on reading, math and locating information, which qualify you for
a Career Readiness Credential. This credential will assist you in showing employers you are a
qualified candidate.
Key Train
The program is used to prepare for taking WorkKeys. It focuses on the knowledge and
abilities important for success in the workplace by measuring “soft” skills such as work habits,
communication skills, workplace effectiveness, and business etiquette. The “Soft Skills Suite”
helps improve skills critical for on-the-job success! - Accessible from any device with a
browser: iPads, Android tablets, Kindle Fire, smartphones, and traditional desktop and laptop
computers.
