Girl, 7, taken by crocodile
By ALISON BEVEGE
A LITTLE girl was taken by a
crocodile at a remote Territory billabong yesterday.
The seven-year-old was
swimming with friends at a
waterhole at Gumarrirnbang
outstation in Arnhem Land,
about 110km southwest of
Maningrida and 340km east of
Darwin. The girl was last seen
about 4pm in a Manggabor
creek waterhole, swimming
with other children from the
tiny community.
Maningrida police sergeant
Kim Chambers said the kids
had seen a crocodile.
An immediate search of the
area was conducted but had to
stop as night fell, he said.
Family members from the
close-knit community were
last night too upset to talk but
were comforting each other
and preparing to join the
search at first light today.
Charmana Namarnyilk, 24,
from Maningrida, went to the
outstation yesterday when
she heard what happened.
‘‘We just lost our little girl,’’
she said. ‘‘We are having a
church service. We came
together and we’re helping
one another.’’
Ms Namarnyilk said Maningrida police were due to return at 7am. NT Parks and
Wildlife last night sent a crocodile ranger from Darwin to
help with their hunt.
Extra police including officers from the Tactical Response Group and Water Police were also sent.
Oenpelli police were last
night on standby, waiting to
hear back from Maningrida
officers, who have carriage of
the incident.
Manggabor creek flows
close to the tiny outstation
and into the Liverpool River.
Last night Arnhem Land
residents were deeply upset
and apprehensive and said
they were waiting on news
from police.

IT was standing room only at
the Alice Springs Catholic
church yesterday as mourners
farewelled Greg Crowe.
Hundreds arrived at Our
Lady of the Sacred Heart, spilling out of the back and side
doors, for the funeral of the
principal of Santa Teresa’s
Ltyentye Apurte Catholic
School, who was killed in a car
crash in Darwin last week.
Bishop Eugene Hurley conducted the mass, saying Mr
Crowe had inspired countless
people in the Territory.
Mr Crowe’s son, Jonno
Crowe, said seeing hundreds
celebrate his father’s life made
him even more proud.
Jonno said his father was
always the parent who was
cheering the loudest.
‘‘I’ve had so many people from
basketball who I haven’t talked
to in years come up or call me
saying how much of a good
bloke he was,’’ he said.
‘‘I don’t mean to base this all
on sport but those were your
proudest moments for me.’’
Bishop Hurley, Jonno and
brother-in-law Garry Lambert
recalled Mr Crowe’s ‘‘terrible’’
jokes — but all said they missed
them dearly.
‘‘Even when I was young, he
would be out there telling countless jokes and laughing while
everybody else in the room
would be saying ‘aw come on,
Greg’,’’ Jonno said.
‘‘I miss your smile, Dad, I
miss your laughter and most of
all, I’ll miss you forever, Dad.
‘‘I love you, Dad.’’
THE TERRITORY’S brand new
$1.7 million pilot boat has run
aground in Darwin Harbour
within its first 24 hours.
The Chinese-built Lamaroo,
which is to ferry pilots to LNG
ships, ran aground on a
mudbank surrounded by a
rocky reef north of Wickham
Point about 11.10am yesterday.

have been cancelled due to the
very distressing news,’’ said
Noeletta Gamanydjan McKenzie on Facebook.
It is not the first time a
child has been killed in the region. In 2006 an eight-year-old
girl from an outstation was
killed by a 5m saltwater crocodile as she fished with her
family on the Blythe River
between Maningrida and
Ramingining.
There have been at least 14
fatal croc attacks in the Territory since 1975.

Darwin Port Corporation
spokeswoman Melissa Reiter
said unusually low tides thanks
to the recent eclipse were to
blame.
‘‘The grounding occurred in
abnormally low tidal conditions,’’ she said.
The low tide at 1.34pm today
was just 0.1m.
As the waters rose in the
afternoon, the pilot boat was
floated off and towed in to Fort
Hill Wharf.
‘‘As a precaution we used a
work boat to guide it in,’’ Ms
Reiter said.
‘‘We haven’t yet assessed the
propellors or engine but there’s
no damage to the hull.’’
Ms Reiter said the boat would
be assessed over the next couple
of days. The Port Corporation is
investigating.
