Lesson 3- Expanded Form pg 42
The way a number is usually written is called standard form.
e.g. 32 456
Expanded Form shows a number broken down into its place value. You can
write expanded form using words or digits/numerals.
To write a number using expanded form using words:
1) Write the digit on the far left of the number
2) Beside it write the place value in words that the number is in
3) Put a “+” sign and repeat with the next digit
To write a number using expanded form using digits/numerals:
1) Write the digit on the far left of the number
2) Add the number or zeros to match the place value of the digit
3) Put a “+” sign and repeat with the next digit
e.g. 4321
In words:
Write the digit on the far left: 4
Write the place value beside: 4 thousands
Write a plus sign: 4 thousands +
Repeat with next numbers
4 thousands + 3 hundreds + 2 tens + 1 one
In digits/numerals:
Write the digit on the far left: 4
Add the correct number of zeros to match the place value: 4000
Write a plus sign: 4000 +
Repeat with the next numbers
4000+ 300 + 20 +1
If there is a zero in the number simply leave that place value out when writing
expanded form.
Do not forget to put the zero in the number if you are going from expanded
form to standard form!
