The Lifeblood
of BCYC
We are now in the midst of one of the wonderful summer events
that illustrates what volunteerism at BCYC can accomplish. A
few years ago Rhonda Tolar came up with the idea to create
a summer race series on Tuesday evenings around the Taco
Tuesday theme. If you have any doubts of its success, drop by
on Tuesday evening and see for yourself. There are usually 12
to 15 larger sailboats racing in the PHRF fleet and 25 to 30
Harbor 20s.
If you think that Taco Tuesday is just another sailboat race,
you are missing a great time, a wonderful Mexican-style buffet,
and a relaxed informal evening with your fellow members.
July 2016
Every Tuesday we have at least eight members out with Paul
DeCapua and Bill McNamara on Race Committee and several
more, including Rhonda and her daughter, Natalie, organizing
the raffle prizes and decorations. It is truly a joyous event that
makes us glad to be members of BCYC.
I also want to acknowledge another major task that was
completed recently by two of our hard working volunteers, Kari
Konapelsky and Staff Commodore Karen Winnett. They spent
almost 12 full days cleaning and organizing the Lowry Room.
This room is where all of our items used to decorate for parties
and other events are stored. Over many years, it had become
overcrowded and totally disorganized. Kari and Karen changed
all that and the Lowry Room is now beautifully organized, the
items are labeled and readily available for our next gala event.
Thank you Kari and Karen.
This type of volunteerism is certainly the lifeblood of BCYC.
Let all of our volunteers know how much we appreciate
their time and effort. Without them, we would be a much
different club.

Artist Showcase: Art,
Cars, Italian, Pizza
Showcasing the talents of the many BCYC artists, the eighth
annual Member Art Show, held this year on Father’s Day,
in conjunction with the awesome brunch and Car Show,
was a smashing success. Everyone had the chance to meet
some of the artists and admire the paintings, sculptures,
photography, jewelry, and other beautiful media. The Car
Show, organized by Mark Arizmendi and Cleve Sproule,
July 2016
allowed us to see some stylish rides, classic cars and works
in progress. These shows are a cherished tradition at BCYC,
allowing our membership to shine. Many thanks to all who
helped put on these events.
Tuscany On the Terrace, Aug. 27, outside near the compass
rose, returns to the club. Hot Club de Bop will again entertain
us and Chef Georges Rapicault and the culinary team will
showcase classic Italian food. It will be a beautiful evening
under twinkling globe lights, an event not to be missed.
In between these events we have two more Patio Movie
Nights, July 22 following the Burger Bash, and Aug. 19. Both
will again feature made-to-order pizzas baked while you
wait, on the lower patio. We welcome everyone to attend.

Communication –
Many Platforms
BCYC utilizes several platforms to communicate to the
membership with details about upcoming events, cruises
and other valuable information. These include:
•The Masthead, the BCYC magazine that is published 10
times per year, filled with informative articles and cool
pictures
•Weekly eblasts that contain detailed information about
events and cruises, as well as a club calendar, the weekly
dining specials and the sandwich of the month – scroll
through all the pages so you don’t miss anything
•Special eblasts that contain information about a particular
event, or an upcoming cruise sign up, or an update about
a change in dining availability
•The website Events At A Glance section that provides event
details, the ability to utilize social media to make another
member or possible future member aware of the event,
and where applicable, click through to make a reservation
•Event notification via Clubster (through email or text),
again providing the opportunity to easily communicate via
social media, make a reservation and put together groups
of other members who have joined Clubster – contact
Amber Vogel ([email protected]) in the club office if you
need the link to join Clubster
DID YOU
KNOW
?
Don’t miss out on any of the great stuff happening at BCYC.
Your participation just makes the event and the cruise better!
Fourth of July at the club will see the Columbia Room
open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. with a burn-your-own barbecue
and pot luck event starting at 5 p.m. – bar service will be
available on the lower level patio for this event, and there
will be live music provided by Steve Woods (brother of Staff
Commodore Rod Woods). Patio Pizza Movie Night, to be
held July 22 on the poolside patio, will be great fun. The
patio bar opens at 6 p.m., made-to-order pizzas on really
cool, quick-cooking, pizza ovens begins at 6:30 p.m. and the
movie starts at 8 p.m. Burger Bash Fridays, throughout July
and starting at 5 p.m., will feature hamburgers, brats, hot
dogs, chicken, salads and more. August will bring another
Movie Night (Aug. 19) and Tuscany On the Terrace Aug. 27.
Finally, Taco Tuesday continues every Tuesday through the
end of August, with the club open at 4 p.m. One member
says this is the best kept secret at BCYC and it only took her
three years to figure it out! Don’t wait three years – come
enjoy the buffet and a beverage of your choice and stay for
the racing awards!
Sailing
Important Stuff
Did you know that Burger Bash will be held all
five Fridays in July this year? We look forward to
seeing you on the lower level patio.
Did you know that Camp Corinthian started June
27 and ends Aug. 5? Please be aware of the many
youngsters who will be around the club and in the
parking lot.
A Note from our Chaplain . . .
“Everyone makes mistakes in life, but that
doesn’t mean they have to pay for them the rest
of their life. Sometimes good people make bad
choices, it doesn’t mean they are bad. It means
they are human.”

•An electronic board located near the entry to the
Columbia Room where these event promotional fliers
scroll continually
•Tabletop tents, usually in the Columbia Room
•Word-of-mouth, an interesting old-school communication
technique where members stay in touch via phone call, or
text
•A printed flier that contains event or cruise details that
you can pick up at the club office
Sailing has impacted my life in numerous ways over
the past few years. I have met many different people
from all over that I would not have met otherwise.
Some of them are sailors who have become great
friends. Others are complete strangers who have
shown me how tightly knit the boating community
can be in times of need. Last year when a lightning
storm struck during a regatta, a kind lady, Mary
Longpre-BYC member, took us into her house
and sheltered us from the storm. Sailing has made
me learn to make decisions more quickly and to
always have a contingency plan if things do not
go as planned. The sailing skills I have learned are
valuable life lessons.

It’s All Good
It is summertime and our club is in full swing on land and sea,
and ”it’s all good.”
Camp Corinthian, under the guidance of Junior Sailing
Director Cameron MacClaren, has begun with a record
number of participants and, as I said in my June Masthead
article, these campers are the future of our club, including,
perhaps, a future commodore – let’s all continue our support
and encouragement.
Taco Tuesdays are continuing to host large crowds both on
the water and in the clubhouse. Make plans to be at the club
on Tuesdays through August and participate, whether racing
or enjoying the fantastic Mexican buffet. This event alone has
proven to show that we are truly the Friendliest Club on the
Bay, as we entertain an ever-increasing number of members
and guests.
This month our Junior Staff Commodore’s Cruise sets off for
San Diego under the able command of Junior Staff Commodore
Craig Delaney, and Joan. They have a great itinerary planned
with many fun events scheduled along the way. This is an
excellent opportunity to visit other yacht clubs and enjoy
their hospitality.
Our cruises, under the leadership of Secretary Steve and Lauri
Moffett, continue with each seemingly topping the last one.
We had over 16 Boats at our Memorial Day Cruise to Long
Beach Yacht Club. Many thanks to Stuart and Teri Leigh for
their efforts in hosting this cruise. The Isthmus Cruise, hosted
by Director Bill and Kristy Parr, saw even more boats on this
adventure – we all enjoyed participating in the Olympic games
that were an important part of this cruise.
July 2016
Big Mac…
NO Fries
More than 300 boats have registered for the 108th Chicago
Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, one of the world’s longestrunning freshwater distance races. The 333-mile sprint from
Chicago to Mackinac Island, MI kicks off Saturday, July 23.
On that very same day, we will run the second race of the
Angelman Series. The distance is much shorter and the
boats only get to spend one afternoon at sea. Nevertheless,
the series is a local favorite because it tests skills and crew
cooperation with its windward-leeward courses. Three times
the “twice-around” course daily provides plenty of photo ops.
Although it’s still a few months before we run the Club
Championship Regatta, I want to make sure everyone has
blocked Sept. 17-18 on their calendar. On the 17th, families
(crew can include the family pet!) will compete for the
Family Championship trophy. On the 18th, championship
teams (skipper and crew must be BCYC members) will
compete for the Championship trophy. No need for you to
have a boat as the club provides Harbor 20s.
In case you want to practice for the race, you can get qualified
on, and take out, the club’s Harbor 20. What better way to
ensure victory than to practice! Ask Susie Brodrick in the
club office for details on use of the Harbor 20.
The Fall Finale Race, scheduled for Nov. 12, will have racing
venues for PHRF and Harbor 20s. PHRF will race outside
the harbor and Harbor 20s will race inside. Regardless of the
boat you sail, the post-race party at BCYC will be HUUUGE
– be sure to sign up!
August 11-14 will find us on our annual Clambake cruise,
once again returning to the Del Rey Yacht Club facility in
Cat Harbor. This year, the theme will be “Under the Sea.”
This event is a long-time tradition at BCYC, one of the most
anticipated cruises of the year. I have always made it a plan
to participate in Clambake with my family. My children, who
are now in their 40s, grew up at this event and now I am
looking forward to my grandchildren doing the same. As we
continue this pace of great cruises, I hope we will again have
a record turnout as Clambake is truly designed for the whole
family. Please plan to join us as we explore everything from
Jules Verne to Finding Nemo along with great food prepared
by Chef Georges Rapicault and his staff.
Hope to see you all on the water as we have many choices at
BCYC. Special thanks to all our member volunteers and staff
for your tireless efforts in making things happen at the club.

van will be provided for the cruisers who are rafted up. This
party is also open to members who want to drive down.
Details will be sent out to everyone (boating or driving) who
signs up by mid-July.
Clambake – Aug. 11-14 in Cat Harbor
Sign-up begins July 9 for this cruise. We are back at the
Del Rey Yacht Club facility in Cat Harbor! Watch for more
details coming soon.
The Isthmus Cruise to Isthmus Yacht Club and BCYC’s
Summer Games were such a big hit! Director Bill and Kristy
Parr, our cruise captains, were outstanding in organizing
this great event. Thank you so much for all your hard work.
Another big thank you goes to Michael Bryant and Tim
Whelan for entertaining us, as well as Commodore Sandy
Mills for securing IYC for Friday’s cocktail party, AND all
our helpers.
Cambria Wine Tasting Cruise – Sept. 30-Oct. 2
Sign-up begins July 9 for this cruise. Please sign up early
so we can plan for hotel rooms on Moonstone Beach and
winery tours. This cruise is expected to be a sell-out, so don’t
be left out! More details will follow, but this is a “land” cruise
so you will drive up on your own. NO boat is needed and
we encourage all our new members to consider joining us.
NEW Dana Point Raft-up Cruise, July 29-31
Sign-ups began June 22 for this cruise. Friday, July 29, we
will raft up in the west anchorage (near the Marine Institute).
Saturday night our cruisers are invited to a “Tab Hunter
Beach Party” at Paul and Kari Konapelsky’s home! A shuttle
Cruises are a great way to get to know other members and
make more new friends. Our monthly meetings are held the
second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. Please join our
fun group and help us plan the upcoming cruises. We look
forward to seeing you all there!

Camp Corinthian
in Full Swing
Happy Independence Day! With the first week under our
belt, Camp Corinthian 2016 is off to a great start. With class
sizes slightly larger than last year, and lots of new Starfish
sailors, the future of the BCYC Junior Sailing Program has
never been brighter!
The CFJ class, led by Head Coach Matt Peter, is even
larger than last year with over 20 sailors enrolled, ranging
from kids brand new to the boat, fresh out of Sabots, to
varsity high school sailing veterans. Our Junior Mariners
class is also thriving in its second year, with more than 10
sailors enthusiastically learning what it takes to be a skilled
waterman. The Sabot Novice class sailors are getting to learn
each part of the Sabot and beginning to understand how
to read the wind. These racers include a large C3 beginner
class eager to move up the ranks. Meanwhile, our top Sabot
sailors hone their skills under the coaching leadership of
two former Junior Sabot National Champions, Derek Pickell
and Mark Gaudio. Finally, our introductory level Starfish
class, for 5-7 year olds, has more than doubled in size under
the direction of coach Emmy Yoshimura. In her second year
leading the group, her warm, positive and fun teaching style
has the Starfish learning quickly.

Bingo and
Burgers
The Junior Board of Directors held its sixth annual Bingo
Night June 3. It was a fantastique French-themed soiree
attended by almost 100 competitive junior and senior bingo
players. We played six exciting games and 20 fantastic prizes
were won by many different families. Everyone had a great
time, all in the spirit of fundraising for our Junior Program.
I would like to thank all of the Junior board members who
attended, worked, and donated our wonderful prize baskets
and candy. I’m very proud of the work we are doing, and am
looking forward to a great summer. I would also personally
like to thank all of the guests who came out to support us.
Please help us spread the word what a fun evening this is.
Consider bringing an extra friend or two to the 2017 edition
of Le BCYC Bingo!
Make plans to attend at least one Burger Bash, happening
every Friday night in July! There will be burgers, brats,
chicken, salads, prizes, sailboat races and lots more. It’s the
perfect time to meet new people and enjoy everything that is
terrific at BCYC. Stop by and join us – we would love to see
you there – let’s spend some carefree summer Friday nights
at the club.
The Balboa Bay Fleet series is set to begin this month, and our
first major regattas of the summer are just around the corner
including: Summer Gold Cup for Sabots, July 9-10; Junior
Olympic Festival for CFJs, 420s and Lasers, July 15-17. Burger
Bashes are also heating up beginning July 1, continuing every
Friday in July. If you arrive at the club around 5 p.m. on those
Fridays, you can hop in a Sabot or CFJ for a fun evening race
in front of the club where adults can take on the kids and the
kids can wail on their coaches!

Fever
BCYC had a team entered in the 2016 Lily Call Bay
Tournament, held May 21-22. Our team included Russell
and Adrian Grant, Scott, Matt, and Madilyn McKinley, and
me. We set out to compete in this challenge in Newport
Harbor. Based on a recommendation by the Balboa Angling
Club, we went to Ketcham Tackle in Costa Mesa. They spent
an hour getting our team’s gear together, including hooks,
keepers, 4-pound test line, and blood worms for bait! I highly
recommend going there for fishing gear – the Ketcham group
was friendly and helpful, and got us ready for the challenge.
We trolled and fished for two days and caught many kelp
bass using the blood worms. Unfortunately, they were not
legal size, so they couldn’t be included in the tournament.
However, we did find that fishing near the bait barge was
where we caught most of our fish. For the tournament,
however, the only fish allowed to be caught were croaker,
corbina, halibut and bass. While the team did not trophy,
we gave it a great try and had a fantastic time!
We had two kids on our boat who took part in the challenge:
Adrian Grant, Russell’s son, and Madilyn (Madi) McKinley,
Scott’s granddaughter. At first Madi, three years old, was not
sure about the fishing, or touching the fish. After about an
hour or so, she found the live anchovies in the bait tank very
interesting. She realized that, with a fishing net, she could
go fishing in our bait tank. She soon became comfortable
and was picking up the anchovies with her hands. By the
end of the day, she was willing to “kiss her catch.”
Reminder – the Balboa Angling Club Junior Fishing
Tournament started June
18 and runs through
Sept. 11. We are looking
for BCYC kids interested
in entering this challenge
on a BCYC team, as well
as adults to help. If
interested, please contact
me at rhtolar@gmail.
com. Send your “kiss
your catch” pictures so
we can proudly feature
them in the October
issue of The Masthead.
