WE HAVEN’T REALLY RE-INVENTED THE WHEEL, IT JUST SEEMS LIKE IT M E E T N OR M - N AT UR AL OR GAN I C R E CY CL I N G M ACHI N E CON S E R VAT I ON NORM helps to reduce water use by over 50%—that’s 7,000,000 gallons annually—by treating 100% of the wastewater generated from Hassalo on 8th to create clean reclaimed water used to flush toilets, irrigate landscaping and to supply cooling water for interior climate control. Biosolids generated from NORM are reused offsite to make fertilizer and generate energy. NORM S A F E T Y, Q U A L I T Y A N D R E L I A B I L I T Y Designed with state-of-the-art technology and controls, NORM meets the highest standards for wastewater treatment and reuse and is monitored 24/7 by certified wastewater operators to ensure optimal system performance, water quality and tenant safety. VAL UE NORM reduces water and wastewater utility costs which translate into lower cost of living and smaller environmental footprint for building tenants. NORM also reduces strain on an over-capacity city sewer system. N OR M I S T HE F UT UR E N OW As the largest, natural urban wastewater reuse system in North America, we’re proud to provide this benchmark for sustainable living both locally and globally. SO HOW DOES THIS WORK? N ORM D IA G RAM I N M OTI ON To cooling tower Every used drop of water from sinks, toilets, showers and laundry (black and grey wastewater) is collected and stored by NORM. NORM then uses innovative treatment technologies to reduce nutrient loads and natural constructed wetlands to further process the wastewater. NORM’s high tech filtration and disinfection system creates the highest quality of reclaimed water at a level of clarity appropriate for residential reuse. Ultraviolet (UV) and ozone technology is used to kill pathogens and improve water clarity. 9. and 10. Clean water is stored and distributed for reuse. 11. AND A FEW MORE THINGS NATURE SHOWED US HOW N ORM FAQS T HE FACI N AT I N G CON CE PT OF B I OM I M I CRY Why wastewater re-use? E M UL AT I N G N AT UR E ’ S PAT T E R N S – It provides a dependable, locally-controlled, and environmentally beneficial water source. Wastewater reuse allows communities to become less dependent on groundwater and surface water sources. Is wastewater re-use safe? – Yes! Our reclaimed wastewater is highly engineered for safety and reliability. Utilizing stringent 24/7 monitoring and testing, NORM produces Class A reclaimed water—the highest water quality standard in Oregon. At Hassalo on Eighth, biomimicry is our approach to achieve a sustainable solution to water use inspired by how nature processes water and waste. Our goal as a community is to make life better now and in the future by becoming more and more sustainable. NORM is a huge step in this direction by reducing water use, wastewater generation and utility costs. This is done by processing our wastewater in a similar manner as the one that happens in nature. We just help the process along with some leading edge technology, controls and 24/7 monitoring. . Does NORM water smell? – No, since all odor is managed and processed within NORM, reclaimed water generated by NORM does not smell. Would it hurt my child if he/she drank out of the toilet? – No, reclaimed water is free of any pathogens or bacteria that would cause harm if consumed by a child or pet. What happens when NORM needs repair? – Through a partnership with the City of Portland, NORM is designed to discharge untreated wastewater to the City sewer system during periodic repair periods. Potable water from the City will be used instead of reclaimed water during these brief periods.
