Indonesian military personnel remove a flight data
recorder of the ill-fated AirAsia flight QZ8501 into a
proper case in Pangkalan Bun, Indonesia, on Monday.
Divers retrieved one black box Monday and located
the other from the AirAsia plane that crashed more
than two weeks ago, a key development that should
help investigators unravel what caused the aircraft to
plummet into the Java Sea.
Balloons to help
get AirAsia black
box from debris
BY ACHMAD IBRAHIM
Associated Press
PANGKALAN BUN, Indonesia — Search and rescue
workers were preparing
balloons and other equipment Tuesday to lift debris from the AirAsia plane
wreckage to allow divers to
retrieve the cockpit voice
recorder, the search coordinator said.
Divers had recovered
the flight data recorder on
Monday, but the second
black box — which is actually orange — was pinned
under chunks of the plane’s
wing at a depth of 105 feet
in the Java Sea.
“The divers can see it
clearly as an orange object,
but it’s difficult for divers to
retrieve it as layers of heavy
metal and debris are above
it,” said Suryadi Bambang
Supriyadi, operation coordinator for Indonesia’s
national search and rescue
agency.
The two instruments,
which emit signals from
their beacons, are vital
to understanding what
brought Flight 8501 down
on Dec. 28, killing all 162
people on board. They
should provide essential information about the plane
and all of the conversations
between the captain and
co-pilot for the duration of
the flight.
More than 80 Indonesian navy divers plunged
into the shallow sea early
Tuesday about 20 meters
away from the flight data
recorder had been found,
Supriyadi said. Workers
were readying balloons and
lifting bags to raise the debris, he said.
Supriyadi also said that
an Indonesian warship had
found pieces of the plane’s
windows and interior cupboards near the Java port
of Semarang, about 720
kilometers (450 miles)
southeast of where the jet
had lost contact with Indonesian air traffic control,
showing how far some debris has drifted over the 17
days since the accident.
The flight data recorder
will be taken to Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, for evaluation, and the other black
box will be sent as soon as
it is retrieved. It could take
up to two weeks to download and analyze their information, said Nurcahyo
Utomo, an investigator at
the National Committee for
Safety Transportation.
Based on past crashes,
the information retrieved
from the black boxes could
be vital. The two separate devices — designed to
survive extreme heat and
pressure — should provide
investigators with a second-by-second timeline of
the plane’s flight.
The voice recorder takes
audio feeds from four microphones within the cock-
pit and records all the
conversations between
the pilots, air traffic controllers as well as any
noises heard in the cockpit, including possible
alarms or explosions. It
records on a two-hour
loop, so investigators
here won’t just capture
the plane’s final minutes
but the entire 42-minute
trip.
The flight data recorder
captures 25 hours’ worth
of information on the position and condition of
almost every major part
in a plane. It includes a
multitude of data, including altitude, airspeed,
direction, engine thrust,
the rate of ascent or descent and what angle up
or down the plane was
pointed.
“There’s like 200-plus
parameters they record,”
said aviation safety expert John Goglia, a former U.S. National Transportation Safety Board
member. “It’s going to
provide us an ocean of
material.”
The pilots of the AirAsia jet last had contact
with air traffic controllers less than halfway
into their two-hour flight
from Surabaya, Indonesia’s
second-largest
city, to Singapore. Saying they were entering a
stormy area, they asked
to climb from 32,000 feet
to 38,000 feet to avoid
threatening clouds, but
were denied permission
because of heavy air traffic. Four minutes later,
the plane dropped off the
radar. No distress signal
was sent.
Searchers also have
been trying to locate
the main section of the
plane’s cabin.

The hot, hot core
The Earth is made up of three main
layers: the crust, the mantle and the
core. Picture it like a boiled egg.
The thin outer layer is the Earth’s
crust. This is like the eggshell. The
continents and land under the sea
make up the crust.
Right under the crust is a layer of
super-hot rock called the mantle. This
is like the egg white. The mantle is so
hot that part of the rock is melted, or
molten.
The core is in the middle of the
Earth. It is made of metal, mostly iron
and nickel. We can think of this as the
egg yolk. But unlike a yolk, the core
has two parts.
The outer core is so hot that the
metal is melted. The outer core is like
a sea of liquid metal.
The solid iron inner core is about
as big as the moon, and it is as hot as
the surface of the sun. But the rest of
the planet puts so much pressure on
the inner core that it stays solid. It

Born in the Sea
The Earth’s crust is made up of
at least 12 huge pieces that once fit
together like a gigantic jigsaw puzzle.
These pieces are called plates, or
tectonic plates. Tectonic comes
from the Greek word meaning “to
build.”
Tectonic plates are constantly
moving. Experts believe they have
been drifting on the surface of the
Earth for more than 4 billion years.
Hot spot under Hawaii
Most volcanoes form where the
edges of two plates come together.
But the Hawaiian volcanoes erupt in
the middle of the Pacific Plate, about
2,000 miles from the edge.
Experts believe the Hawaiian
volcanoes are over a hot spot in the
Earth. A hot spot is an area in the
mantle where the rock has been
melting for millions of years.
Mountains under the sea
The hot spot under Hawaii is
melting parts of the Pacific Plate.
The melted rock is called magma.
Erupting magma builds up to form
volcanic mountains on the sea floor.
Eventually, some of those mountains
rise above sea level, forming islands.
The Hawaiian Islands are all
actually the tops of volcanoes. Each
island is made up of one or more
volcanoes.
art courtesy USGS
The eight main Hawaiian Islands are the
youngest islands in a chain of volcanomade mountains. The chain stretches
about 3,700 miles, from Hawaii almost to
Siberia in Russia. Most of these mountains
are under water. They form the HawaiianEmperor seamount chain.

Most of Kilauea’s
eruptions have been
with slow-moving
lava flows. On the
average, each day
it produces enough
lava to fill about
100 Olympic-size
swimming pools.
Moving past the hot spot
Mauna Loa is a shield volcano that last
erupted in 1984. Shield volcanoes are
formed by a large number of eruptions of
lava that flows easily. Explosive volcano
lava is usually thicker.
Kilauea has periods
of mostly explosive
activity, then goes
through long periods
when it erupts molten
lava, like it is doing
now.
Volcanoes of Hawaii
Tropical paradise
Hawaii has six active volcanoes.
Two of the most active, Mauna Loa
(MAH-oo-nah LOW-uh) and Kilauea,
are on Hawaii Island. Loihi (lowEE-hee) is erupting off the southern
coast of Hawaii Island. In about
250,000 years, experts believe, a new
Hawaiian island could rise above the
sea.
Mauna Loa is the biggest active
volcano on Earth. It makes up about
half of Hawaii Island and is about
56,000 feet high from its bottom
under the sea to its top, about twice
as tall as Mount Everest. Experts
believe it has been erupting off and
on for about 700,000 years. Its most
recent eruption was in 1984.
Kilauea is one of the most active
volcanoes on Earth. It has been
erupting steadily since 1983. It may
have been erupting on and off for
300,000 to 600,000 years. There are
now two active vents on Kilauea.
Part of the reason the Hawaiian
Islands have such rich plant growth
is because soil made from volcanoes
is some of the most fertile on Earth.
If there is enough rain, plants can
begin growing in a lava-covered area
within a year of an eruption.
In November
2014,
lava from
Kilauea
flowed
through
an orchard
near Pahoa.

The Hawaiian volcanoes are
different from most volcanoes,
which usually erupt in an explosion.
Hawaiian volcanoes usually erupt
with lava flows, but they do have a
few explosive eruptions as well.
Volcanoes that erupt with slow lava
flows look different from explosive
volcanoes. They are wider and more
rounded than the tall, steep cones of
explosive volcanoes. These volcanoes
are called shield volcanoes because
they look like the shields carried by
ancient Roman warriors.

The Pacific Plate moves a few
inches a year. The hot spot stays in
the same place for millions of years.
Right now, it is under Hawaii Island.
As the plate moves, the volcano
that formed above the hot spot is
carried away from the hot spot.
Eventually, this volcano is so
far from the hot spot that it goes
extinct, or stops erupting. But a new
volcano, fed by the hot spot, begins to
form behind the old one.

Streams of lava fall into the
ocean from Kilauea Volcano on
Hawaii Island.
Lava from Hawaiian volcanoes
usually flows only a few miles
per hour. A person could
escape by walking quickly.
However, sometimes, if the
lava is flowing down a steep
hill, it can move as fast as 35
miles per hour.

For more than 30 years, lava has
been pouring from Kilauea (KEE-lahway-ah) on Hawaii Island in Hawaii.
In November 2014, it headed toward a
small town and burned down a house.
The residents had plenty of warning,
and no one was hurt.
People in Hawaii are used to living
on active volcanoes. The Hawaiian
Islands were formed from the same
kind of lava flows now threatening the
small town. Right now, an erupting
volcano is creating what could become
a new Hawaiian island.

Martha Ann Jones
Martha Ann Jones, nee
Gardner, went to meet her
Lord and Savior on January 11th at 8:22 A.M.
She was born to Edd and
Lorena Gardner at home on
North 22nd Street on August 2nd, 1932, in Paducah,
Kentucky.
Martha was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt.
She especially enjoyed being with her family during
holiday gatherings and was
renowned by those closest
to her for her jam cake and
Christmas float. Like her
mother, Martha excelled in
cooking for family celebrations and Sunday afternoon
dinners.
Prior to her unfortunate
stroke, she was very active,
enjoying exercise classes,
square dancing, participation in her church choir
with her husband Charles,
and playing cards with
friends. She loved life and
was known for a quick wit
that was not diminished by
her stroke. She continually
entertained her friends and
the staff who lovingly cared
for her at Superior Care
Nursing Home for 8 years
following her stroke. The
family would like to extend
their gratitude to Mrs. Helen Sims and the staff of Superior Care Nursing Home
for their excellent care of
Martha.
Martha attended Reidland High School, graduating in 1950. She also
attended Draughon’s Business College and worked
for 23 years at Western
Baptist Hospital, retiring
in September 1994. Following her retirement, Martha
and her husband Charles
worked diligently for 12
years at Martha’s Vineyard to deliver meals to the
homebound. She also liked
to sneak treats to her customers’ pets.
In addition to her loving and caring husband,
Charles, Martha’s survivors include her son, Curtis
(Carla) Vinson of Pough-
keepsie, NY, and son, Allen
(Janean) Tinsley of Gage,
KY; daughter, Leah (Jim)
Millizer of Murray, Ky,
daughter, Michelle (Bobby)
Loueallen of Williford, Ark,
and daughter, Lecia Tinsley
of
Paducah,
KY; stepson, Gary
(Dotty)
Jones
of
Metropolis,
Ill; stepdaughter, Terry
(Melvin)
Jones
Kerr and
s t e p daughter, Gina Gonzales
of Florida; Martha’s sister,
Ellen (Gary) Hamilton of
Louisville and sister, Carol
(Bill) Baugh of Paducah.
Martha is also survived by
15 grandchildren, 2 greatgrandchildren, and many
nieces and nephews.
Martha was pre-deceased
by her mother and father;
her grandson, Sean Allen
Millizer; her sister, Doris
who died in childhood; her
brother, Edd Gardner Jr.;
and her sister, Sue Nell Sullivan.
Services for Martha
will be conducted at Milner & Orr Funeral Home
of Paducah, 120 Memorial Drive, Paducah, KY,
Wednesday, January 14,

the decline in the economy.
So that 2 percent raise that
we have to give next year is
going to be tough to do under the current tax rate.”
In September the board
set the district’s tax rate for
this year at 77.1 cents per
$100 of assessed property,
a 0.4 percent increase over
the previous year. Shively
mentioned then, as he did
again Monday night, that
the district will likely have
to raise its tax rate more
significantly next year to
keep up with costs.
Monday night’s board
meeting, held at Morgan
Elementary, was the fifth
traveling board meeting
the district planned to gain
input from parents and
teachers on two topics: the
current grading scale, and
essential 21st century skills
students should master be-
fore graduation.
The board’s earlier traveling board meetings at
Paducah Middle, Paducah
Tilghman and CHOICES
were dominated by discussion of the grading scale. At
Monday night’s meeting,
however, discussion was
brief and centered around
21st century skills.
Morgan Elementary Principal Vicki Conyer pointed
out that the abilities to effectively communicate and
collaborate are essential
skills students need to be
successful in life and work
after high school. However,
improving students’ technical literacy is what Conyer
is most concerned about,
she said.
“I really believe that we
need to find a way to integrate technology even at
the elementary level, even
more so than we’re doing
now,” Conyer said. “Our
kindergarten students, the
world they’re going to be
looking at when they graduate, what is it going to look
like? What will they need?
I think there needed to be
a push to further integrate
technology.”
“I just want to add, the
last statistic I saw regarding
coding was that by the year
2025 there will be 1.1 million unfilled jobs in computer science, specifically
related to coding,” added
Assistant Principal Chris
Sheffer.
“Sounds like a good career path,” Shively said.
“Job security.”
The sixth and final traveling board meeting will be
Feb. 9 at McNabb Elementary.
viewed this week.
“I was really impressed
with the quality of the candidates,” Crisson said. “I
know three of the four finalists personally.”
While the board will
be interviewing the candidates, the candidates
themselves will also have
questions, Crisson said. “It
will be a two-way street.”
Crisson said there are
several
positives
that
would be attractive to potential candidates.
“I’ve really enjoyed the
time I’ve spent in town and
the hospitality of the folks
I’ve met,” Crisson said.
“The community has a lot
of things going for it.”
In addition, the utility
has a strong distribution
system and a capable and
committed staff, he said.
The next general manager
“will have a chance to make
a very positive difference
for both the utility and the
community,” Crisson said.
While there is no timeta-
ble, Crisson said the board
will likely move as quickly
as it can to get someone
hired. The board is working with a local attorney on
an employment contract
for the position.
“An employment contract isn’t a guarantee of
anything, but it does protect both parties, in my
view,” Crisson said.
The interim general
manager said he will help
board members evaluate
the quality of the candidates and provide input,
but the final decision will
be theirs.
“I may participate in
helping them select the top
two candidates,” Crisson
said. “But what I’m reluctant to do is recommend
(the final choice). That has
to be their decision. They
have to feel like they own
it.”

lease of personal information that was posted on the

One of the documents
appeared to be slides developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory,
a federally funded research
and development center focused on national security.
The slides appeared to depict what it called “scenarios” for conflict with North
Korea and China. It’s not
clear where the documents
guide it through the transition.
The interviews will be
conducted in executive
session. No other business is on the agenda for
the two special meetings,
and no final action on the
candidates is expected this
week, according to Roberts.
“It’s been quite a process,” Roberts said of the
nationwide search. “We
have some very good candidates.”
The board chairman said
whoever is hired, “We’re
going to need somebody
pretty good that likes a
challenge.”
According to Crisson, the
executive recruiters contacted over 100 potential
candidates, with 30-40 of
them expressing interest.
That group was narrowed
to the 10 finalists, and further winnowed down to
the four who will be inter-

“To see the beer flowing

to see people enjoying it,
that’ll be the best part.”
Walton has put together
